Gender/sex given at 12 week scan. Anyone else?

The scan technician offered to give an educated guess as to the sex of our wee one at the 12 week scan. I accepted heartily (too impatient to wait until D Day) and he gave a very scientific explanation as to why he thinks it's a girl. I didn't get this at my first baby's scan 4 years ago. Wondering if anyone else had this at 12 weeks and how correct this all turned out to be by the 20 week scan? Seems a bit advanced to be but then technology seems to have moved on in the 4 years since my last child!! Just a curious question really....!

Yes with DS1 and DD, both turned out to be correct (although let's face it, it's only a 50/50 chance!)

DS2, couldn't tell at my 12 week scan (or didn't want to tell me who knows!) but I had a gender scan at 18 weeks and was told boy.
I have another scan tomorrow so will double check after, all being well!

Both twins sex identified at 12 week scan with a 75% accuracy quoted. Confirmed at all further scans as being correct

Suppose there are ways to tell but I think nowadays with too many people making claims for silly little things (like being told the wrong sex!) they wait until they know for sure (ish).

What sex did he say it was? No experience of this myself but interested to hear about how he determined it to see if I can work it out from my 12 week scan pic.

If he sounded pretty convincing I'd tentatively believe him I think but wait until 20 wk scan to confirm.

I have one of each. I know it's the nub theory as genitalia don't develop until after 15 weeks but don't know what they are looking for.

Lorna1234 · 04/03/2015 14:14

He said girl. He said if he drew a line 30 degrees from the base of the spine and then drew a line down (sort of forming a triangle) if there was nothing in there, then it's a girl. He then zoomed in and said 'see this long line here? that's female genitalia'. I was kind of blown away by that rather specific 'guess'. But then kind of sceptical because....it's only 12 weeks and it just seems sooooooo advanced now. Curious if others had the same experience. I also couldn't believe they can do 4D now at a 12 week scan too. Admittedly baby looks like an alien all close up and in 4D, but still. Amaze!

My sister was told hers was a girl at 12 weeks. He is now a 4 year old boy Grin

jazzyjenbo · 04/03/2015 19:46

I had my 12 week scan in November and she was pretty convinced that baby was a boy... Showed me his bits... And said i've never seen anything that looks that male turn into a female... Both myself and dh were convinced we were having a girl so didnt tell anyone else about this info from the 12 week scan.
Roll on January, 20 week scan confirmed by 2 sonographers we are having a GIRL.
I have another scan next week at 28 week and will be getting the bits checked!

Roseotto · 04/03/2015 21:06

My scan at 12w said boy; he is now 6. Consultant explained a similar method of telling the sex, which way the bits point. Some people here call it the nub theory (it isn't a theory though).

Lunastarfish · 04/03/2015 21:29

At my 12 week scan the sonographer said 'she' when referring to the baby. Sex wasn't actually discussed. Just had 20 week scan and asked for sex, it's a girl.

slightlyinsane · 05/03/2015 10:05

I was told my twins were boys at my 18wk scan, at 20 wks they were girls. Took another 3 scans for them to convince me they were girls

Number3cometome · 05/03/2015 12:37

Had my 20 week scan today - still a boy!
