Inconclusive scan at 7weeks - any experience??

I had a small bleed a few weeks ago at 5 wks. Had hcg blood tests which came back fine then a scan booked for today.
The sonographer found a gestational sac with a yolk sac & small fetal pole. sac measuring 4mm which she said puts me at 6 wks. She found it very difficult to see anything as the gestational sac was lying against the uterus wall in an odd position. Had to prod and poke me a lot to see anything at all.
She couldn't find a heart beat which she said May have been due to the position.
I'm really stressing now as by my own dates I should be closer to 7wks and surely a heartbeat should be seen at this point?
Had a scan at the same time in my last pregnancy and saw a perfectly shaped little blob with beating heart.
I've got to go back in 10 days but I feel so down as I thought I would know for sure today that things were progressing Sad

Aww lovely what a horrible experience. It may just be that you ovulated a little later than you thought and that wee heart isn't as far on as you'd thought. Knowing our feminine luck, I beat it started beating the day after Wink

Many many women on here have found the heartbeat on the second scan so please try not to worry (easier said than done I know!).

good luck xx

willow i hope u r ok. did the sonographer sound optimistic?

i had this although i think it was quite obvious from my initial scan that there was a problem. i should have been 9 weeks, the sack seemed to be measuring up about right but there was a huge difference between sack size and the contents. no hb either.

i was told that it was more than likely bad news by an experienced sonographer. i think it it is obvious they would do this so in your case it sounds like things really might be ok. the wait is awful i know (i had to wait 2 weeks).

MuddyWellyNelly · 02/03/2015 13:32

Was the scan internal? I can't tell from your post. My first two (7+2 and 8+5) both had to be internal as I have a retroverted uterus. At the first they couldn't see a HB until they did the internal.

Fingers crossed for you, either way. It's such a waiting game.

WillowB · 02/03/2015 14:06

Thank for the replies. Yep scan was internal muddy
Just hate the waiting game. Especially as I'd convinced myself everything was fine after the blood test - and I feel pregnant, nausea, the works!

Ah ok. How sure of dates are you? I knew exactly due to IVF, but even people with very regular cycles have odd months where OV is much later than they thought. How long since you took your first positive HPT? If you are genuinely only 6 weeks, then no HB isn't that worrying - it was for this very reason I didn't go for a test until over 7 weeks. I think the fact there is a fetal pole is good news, but of course it is no guarantee.

Wishing you lots of luck.

scarednoob · 02/03/2015 14:44

crossing everything for you. i would try and take some comfort from the odd position - this is hopefully why they couldn't see too much rather than any other reason.

the 10 days is hard. i had no idea 24 hours could seem so long until i got that BFP!

I know the date that we conceived because it was a happy accident, but early scan didn't match up to my dates and put me at nearly a week under. Things caught up by the time I got to 12 weeks. Hope all is fine at your next scan

anothernumberone · 02/03/2015 15:08

Yes I had that exact experience on DD1. The second HCG level doubled within 2 days which apparently made them more confident. No heartbeat at that stage is common as apparently you can be later in cycle ovulating etc. it was not pleasant I feel for youFlowers. The early scan does allow for very accurate dating of the pregnancy if it is viable.

WillowB · 02/03/2015 15:09

muddy I was using OPKs during my cycle and I know I ovulated around day 15/16 which would make me about 6+4 possibly at the latest. I got a BFP at 11/12 dpo though it was very very feint.

I know what you mean scarednoob feel like I've been pregnant forever!

WillowB · 09/03/2015 19:57

Hi gingerbreadmam thanks for asking after me. I'm doing ok thanks. 1 week on and I have full on nausea & that horrid metallic taste all day. I'm taking it as a positive sign though Smile People have also started to notice my expanding waistline Confused
It's been the longest week ever! My follow up scan is weds afternoon. So not long now.

how far along do you think you are now willow? have you had any other problems or has everything been ok?

when is ur re-scan?

really dont want to lead you on but those symptoms sound very promising especially a growing waistline. i hope u get good news very soon.

WillowB · 09/03/2015 22:01

Officially I'm 8 weeks but by my own dates prob about 7+4ish. Had some brown discharge last week after the internal scan but I think this was probably down to the prodding & poking of my cervix. I remember having the same with the internal scan I had with DS.
Feeling fairly hopeful since my symptoms ramped up but then I've read lots of stories on here of mmcs so who knows.

gingerbreadmam · 10/03/2015 09:54

oh well i suppose the good news is when you go back you should definitely see a hb so u wont be in limbo after next scan.

as i said symptoms sound promising and you sound very positive about it all will keep my fingers tightly crossed.

WillowB · 11/03/2015 19:28

Had my follow up scan this afternoon & saw a tiny baby almost straight away measuring 8 wks, complete with recognisable head, body and little limbs starting to form - amazing how much it had grown in 10 days!! Most importantly we saw the heartbeat so things are looking positive. Thanks for all the supportive messages Flowers
