Are you bigger with your second pregnancy?

I am feeling HUGE. Sure I am loads bigger than with dd1. Are there any health implications of getting big early on? I am 22 weeks and have suddenly got a really big bump. Anyone else found this second time round?

Loads of people are much bigger,or at least bigger earlier with their second and subsequent pregnancies. Things are already stretched and a bit loose after no 1 () and so often the bump is out from near the beginning. I know that on our June preg thread a few mums have said that they have outgrown their last lot of maternity clothes or were in them quite early (sadly I was bigger before I even got pregnant with no 2). Have you had your anomaly scan yet? I'm sure they would/will mention any concerns then if there are any. I'm sure the medical experts will give you good advice here but sounds normal I'm afraid.

sexgoddess · 25/04/2004 11:22

with preg1 at 20 weeks I was still in my size 10 jeans....

with preg2 I looked about 8 months preg.

So yes I was bigger second time.

dinny · 25/04/2004 11:26

Hi Monkeygirl, my bump is only just out really. At 18 wks my fundus was measuring 16cm.

Anomaly scan is tomorrow, as it happens. Hope all is OK.

Maybe I have forgotten how big you get in pregnancy. And of course my abs are not strong after dd1, of course!

yep! huge second time around!

was pretty big by end of first pregnancy (baby was 8lb4). second time I seemed to be big almost from the begining! and felt nothing short of elephant by the end, baby was 10lb1 and 6months later I still feel a bit on the big size.
I console myself with the thought of summer/good weather/lots of walking!

dinny · 25/04/2004 11:42

So is it true second babies are bigger than first, do you think?

Ha ha, Sexgoddess - ditto, I look about 7-8 months preg, I think. But it is so weird as until literally two weeks ago, I didn't looke pregnant really (well, I did to me, not to others)! What will I be like by August??? AAARRRGGHHHHHHH!!!

dinny if your fundus is only 16 cm you do NOT look 8 months pregnant! That is unless you've grown hugely in the last 4 weeks. I am 8 months pregnant and measuring 41 cm (and yes this is a second baby..). Think in your case its the looser this time round effect whereas in mine its just a huge baby.

BadHair · 25/04/2004 16:46

I got bigger quicker with ds2, but by the time I was 39 weeks I was about the same size as the first time. Ds2 was 1lb heavier than ds1 so I guess there was less fat/water and more baby second time round!

Bozza, think I have grown hugely in last four weeks! Can you measure your own fundus? From where to where? Pubic bone to top of bump?

How many weeks are you, Twiglett?

When I was expecting no2 I told the health visitor I was pregnant again and she looked at my stomach and said oh yes you must be 5/6 months, at this point I was only 6 weeks pregnant!! I think, particularly if you have a small gap between children, your stomach muscles don't have time to recover so you are more likely to look bigger. Well that was my excuse and i'm sticking to it!!

bunny2 · 25/04/2004 18:46

I'm huge! I def look pregnant and I am only 10 wks! I got big last time too but not as quickly as this.

dinny · 25/04/2004 18:59

Oh, Monkeysmum, that did make me laugh (sorry). It must be to do with tummy muscles! HV's are tactless sometimes!

With this 2nd preg, I grew suddenly at about 20 - 22 wks. Before this I could hide it easily, and no-one noticed, suddenly it popped out, and people were amazed that I was all of a sudden pregnant.

Linnet · 25/04/2004 21:28

This is my second pregnancy. I was still in my jeans until 26 weeks. Didn't tell any family or friends I was pregnant until 20 weeks and nobody had guessed and didn't tell anyone at work until 22 weeks and again nobody had guessed.

Measurement wise I don't appear to be any bigger or smaller just the same as first pregnancy. Although my granny keeps saying I'm sure you're bigger this time around but the measurements are the same so I don't think so.

A girl I work with is due 8 weeks after me with her second and she was showing before I'd even told anybody at work I was pregnant. Everyone is different.

Tommy · 25/04/2004 22:03

I think everything is just looser second time round!
When I was 33 weeks pg with DS2 I got chatting to another pg woman at at pedestrian crossing (!) She was due that day and couldn't believe that I still had 7 weeks to go! Mind you, she was on her first and was probably about 15 years younger than me

dejags · 26/04/2004 09:02

I did put on weight at an alarming rate for the 1st 12 weeks of this pregnancy (No. 2) but with a concerted effort I have halted the tide.

In my first pregnancy I was HUUUUGE(I put on 4.5 stone!!!), with this pregnancy I am hoping that I will put on about half that or maybe a little more (2.5 stone max). My bump is definitely different this time round too - far more compact i.e. you wouldn't be able to tell I was pregnant from behind.

So I am in the smaller second time round camp...

This is my 3rd and I am gigantic.......I'm actually getting quite depressed at amount of pple saying 'Is it twins? You must be about to drop'. I still have 8 or so weeks to go.......I really can't get much bigger. Wouldn't weigh meself if you paid me...........m/w at last visit (few and far btwn with the 3rd it seems) just said I was about right, but with 3rd pg in 4 and a bit years, not tummy muscles to speak of. Nice eh?

dinny · 27/04/2004 21:02

Littlerach, that sounds like me - nothing until huge spurt at 20 weeks-ish.

Dejags, please tell me how to halt the gaining-weight tide. I too put on 4 stone w dd1. How can I avoid the same happening! Can't diet, can we.

Twiglett - lucky you! Feel like I have years of being pg left!

Me too. I didn't show at all until about 20 weeks last time. I'm currently 26 wks, have put on more than 1.5 stone and look huge, despite the fact that the bump is quite tidy and all at the front.
I don't think it's necessarily to do with bigger babies as a lot of it is other stuff (baby doesn't weigh 22 lbs at 26 weeks I hope!).
I've just been on holiday with some friends and they swore I was getting bigger by the day!

dinny · 30/04/2004 12:36

Where did you post your message Dinosaur - on here?

Haven't weighed myself either - can't bear to. Hope I manage not to be weighed at all by midwife - they haven't so far (can you refuse to be or is that stupid?)
