22 weeks pregnant with ID twins and have been off work for almost 2 weeks due to dizziness. I'm desperate to get back as I get bored/down in the house but some days struggle to get out of bed as I feel drained and weak and don't feel confident going for little walks on my own for fresh air as I can't stand or walk for longer than a few minutes without feeling faint and clammy.

I've had my results back from my GP which showed.
My blood sugar levels: 4.1 (after food)
Ferritin (sp?) : 6
Haemoglobin: 114
Which my GP was worried about.
I've tried eating more meat, veg, slow releasing carbs to keep my sugar levels, level but nothing is working.

Anyone got any suggestions please?? as I'm in the process of moving house and need some energy for work and moving.
Right now I feel useless :(

I think your hb level is on the low side, did your doc recommended iron tablets? I've been taking pregaday as anamic and that's helped with the tiredness and shortness of breath.
Kale is good for upping iron too I've been eating lots of that!
It's rubbish feeling so tired, hope it improves soon :0(

Felt utterly grim with anaemia - high doses of iron tablets made me feel much much better with a week. I don't think diet is enough especially with twins.

prettywhiteguitar · 27/02/2015 11:50

I think diet won't touch it I'm afraid if you're anemic, has your midwife taken your blood and given you tablets ?

I always get anemic and this time I'm on pregnecare and two iron tablets a day and eating red meat and veg to help absorb it. And I only have one baby taking my iron !

Last time I tried to use liquid iron as its easily absorbed and diet and I was still dizzy an d knackered all the time ! So iron tablets are reall the only thing that works, to help absorb them proberly don't drink tea or dairy and I promise you will perk up ! I was falling asleep during the day two weeks ago, a week of all that decant tea and tablets and I feel normal.

Hope you feel better soon

prettywhiteguitar · 27/02/2015 11:51

Sorry for all the typos, that should be decaf tea !

Rebecca1608 · 27/02/2015 11:53

She's given me iron tablets and says they should make me feel better but could make me feel sick but I'm gonna try and also give kale a go. I can't feel any worse really. I feel bad because I like to be on the go and have so much to do before twins arrive at 36 weeks. Everyone tells me to just "rest" but no matter how much sleep I get, it's never enough anyway. I'm always knackered.

Floradix is good in pregnancy, its a liquid so easily absorbed. Also spirulina is very high in bio available iron, powder you can mix with juice.

Rebecca1608 · 27/02/2015 11:55

She gave me iron tablets to take and has also recommended pregnacare too. I should probably eat more red meat as all I usually eat is chicken or Turkey.

Take spa tone in orange juice - it is absorbed much better than the tablets, and usually avoids the constipation side effects too.

It got my iron levels up in less than a week when I was pregnant.

Rebecca1608 · 27/02/2015 11:56

Can I get them from health shops or only as a prescription off GP??

Rebecca1608 · 27/02/2015 11:58

Can I buy spa tone?

Anemia is a different kind of knackered though isn't it !

Roonerspism · 27/02/2015 12:15

I took double dose floradix in my last pregnancy and it really helped.

Rebecca1608 · 27/02/2015 12:21

Yeah it definitely is different. I might buy some floradix. I'll have a look in Holland and Barrett to see if they have it.

I used to buy Spatone from the pharmacy bit in my nearest big supermarket. Larger Boots do it too, or you can buy it online.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 27/02/2015 13:19

I also recommend Spatone, I bought it from Amazon and the co-op chemist. Make sure you don't take it at the same time as tea. The side effects are so much better than iron tablets.

ChablisTyrant · 27/02/2015 13:22

Floradix isn't going to be enough for you. Take 2 iron tablets with food. Buy some orange juice to sip to help absorb the iron. Very few people get nausea. Start right now and you'll feel better soon.

Rebecca1608 · 27/02/2015 13:33

I'm just waiting for my mum to pick up my prescription and I've got loads of orange juice in my house so I'll definitely start as soon as she brings them for me. Just wanted to know if there were other things I could try really food wise to speed things up a bit. Obviously my health isn't great right now but I'm hoping twins are getting everything they need.

Should think the twins are fine they are taking it all from you!! Once the iron tablets kick in you should feel a bit better, hopefully you won't get side effects from them...

Rebecca1608 · 27/02/2015 14:48

I hope not either. I really hope they'll do the job along with more red meats And kale.
