Hello, I've just been told I've got Gestational diabetes. I have read a lot in to this. I have seen a midwife about this today & she's going to monitor my sugar levels & I also need to monitor them at home.

Ladies out there who suffered this during there pregnancy what was your outcome? Complications?

Ladies who's suffering this during your pregnancy now, how do u feel?

Hi MumToBe why did they test you? I'm 21 + 5 today and there was sugar in my wee at my midwife appointment yesterday. She said is was +2 of sugar (I think). Anyway, she said she wouldn't test me for diabetes unless it happens again as I'm not high risk. I'm a bit worried though. There's half a chocolate fudge cake in the fridge and I feel like I can't have a slice!

I was diagnosed at 28 weeks, I am now 35+5. They tested me because of sugar in my urine. No one expected it to come back positive as I have no risk factors but it did.

Tried to control it with diet, but was put on tablets at 30 weeks. So far so good. Been having regular growth scans, baby is a little big but not massive. I am being induced at 39 weeks exactly.

Its been hard when all I want to eat is sweet stuff, and hands in the air I have had the odd treat but then my bloods are high and feel really guilty.

I was told two weeks ago to watch out for hypos. I have had one, it was not pleasant.
The care that I have received however has been excellent.

Hi thesmallbear I was tested due to my dad & grandparents having diabetes. My sugar levels were not excessively high when I had my test on Friday, as it was fasting there wanted me to be under 5, but I was 5.7. So since then I have completely spotted all sugar intake as I'm so scared something will happen to the baby if I don't. I've waited 4yrs to get pregnant due to having PCOS.

I think you should ask to be retested as its better if they detect it now if you do have.

But I hope you don't Hun, good luck with the pregnancy xx

I was diagnosed after gtt test at 28 weeks. I had endless appointments with consultant and growth scans which I didn't enjoy. I managed to control my sugars with diet and exercise, I was prescribed metformin which I refused as my sugars were within the levels apart from two occasions when they were slightly higher. I gave birth at 37+3 to a 5lb 6oz ds. My labour was very fast and I had no complications and no pain relief ( no time). I was constantly told I would have complications and was booked in for an induction at 38 weeks which then changed to 39 weeks. My last growth scan was 3 days prior to his birth and an estimated weight of 7lb. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy, relax and enjoy it!

Thumperroo thank you so much for your reply above, you've put my mind at ease knowing things can all be okay. I've just done my blood sugar test again after my mid-day meal (1hr later) & result was 4.4. So I'm very happy with that. Will keep up with healthy eating low sugars & exercise.

I had GD with pregnancies 3&4. I ended up on insulin and metformin as i couldn't control it with diet alone, it was harder to control the second time and I was on higher levels of the medication. DC3 was born at 37+4 weighing 6lb 11oz and DC4 was born at 38+1 weighing 8lb 7oz - I had early sections due to my BP not the GD. Both babies were fine afterwards, they had their blood sugars tested a few times and they were within normal levels so didn't need any further treatment.
I've just been retested myself now my DC is 6 weeks and am waiting for the results. I am actually expecting them to say I am still diabetic as when I've tested myself since the birth my levels have been high or borderline.

Alyx80 · 24/02/2015 15:32

I meant to say it's normal to find the GD gets harder to control as you get further into pregnancy so don't be upset if you can't manage to keep it diet controlled further on x

DS1 - 9lb at 40 weeks exactly
DD1 - 8lb 2oz at 38 weeks exactly.

BMI at start of pregnancy was 26, I have PCOS (although more recent scans suggest it is not a big issue)

I had eclampsia (seizures) with DS and pre-eclampsia with DD.

I was never tested before, but told I need to be tested this time as my babies were both over the 92nd centile at birth?

I have my test in April, not looking forward to it.

I cannot tolerate sugar at all, I feel sick if I eat anything sweet and if I do have something like a bar of choc I am fast asleep 15 mins later.

I don't think I have GD so don't particularly want the test, my diet has been fine in pregnancy (was bad for the first 12 weeks due to HG, but fine now)

I am having the test done though.
