Bleeding at 18 weeks - on bedrest

That's it really. Bleeding on Fri night but nothing since. Will get app for scan ASAP Mon morning. Anyone else had this or on bedrest for something else? Can hear DH and DS playing in garden which is nice but I know the house needs tidying and DH can't multi task as single parent AND house keeper unlike me

Sounds flippant I know but I am trying to stay positive. MC-ed last year at 10 weeks. Would be so much worse this time having seen scan, heard heartbeat, felt movements, told DS and everyone else...

Hope scan goes OK tomorrow, it must be scary. No experience of this myself, just wanted to pass on my best wishes.

Hopefully baby is ok and it's one of those things.
I remember reading on this forum about bleeding at different stages of pregnancy and all was good with the babies. Hope this will be your case too. Try the search function, it will bring you some reassurance.

Hope you get a scan asap, I'm assuming (hoping!) someone's examined you and said no cervix issues and listened for baby's heartbeat? Bedrest fairly unusual in these circs but partly to make you feel better, so you know you've done everything you can. Some EPAU will accept you at 18 weeks and some maternity units, unfortunately sometimes at 18 weeks you fall between the two...

Lots of people bleed at 18 weeks and are fine. Could be cervical erosion, could be no real reason, could be placenta praevia which is no trouble these days. Trouble is lying in bed just means you have nothing else to do but think about possible bad reasons :) Can you get a box set on and eat some utter shite?

Thanks junior. I have been watching backed up episodes of University Challenge (my own strange TV fix) and eating chocolate. It was OOH GP who recommended bedrest. Not been examined or anything as happened Fri night. Will ask for GP or midwife appt first thing for scan referral, tbh just hearing heart beat would be enough to reassure me.

Why not pop along to your maternity unit to get checked out ...

There should be an out of hours midwife number on the front of your maternity notes. I've been on rest for around ten days now due to problems with my cervix, am currently 26+4, mostly bored out of my mind as am not great at keeping myself entertained :) and still got a couple of weeks rest ahead of me, although thankfully bed rest is mainly a couple of hours in the morning and afternoon. The rest of the time is taking it easy.

I had a small bleed at 28 weeks which was the day before I flew overseas for work (and a Sunday!). Under ordinary circumstances I might have left it but was terrified of something happening in a different country. My bleed was from a cervical growth, which is apparently very common and was completely benign. But it was a relief to be checked and hear the heartbeat etc.

I then went on to do a flight and a six day week with 16 hour days, so the exact opposite of bed rest .

I had a bleed at 23 weeks and rang the antenatal unit number in my notes. They asked me to come in and checked baby's heart beat. Also checked my cervix & couldn't find any reason for the bleeding. Cervix was closed so they thought it might be coming from the placenta. I was kept in overnight for observation and then discharged the next day. I was told to always go straight to hospital to be checked if I had another bleed. Is there not a hospital number that you could ring, I'd be a bit concerned that a GP wouldn't have much expertise here.

Maternity ward not interested as less than 20 weeks - said go to a&e or call ooo gp which I did. Seeing gp would only be to get referral to hospital for a scan.

And A&E would be a long wait but gynae registrar/SHO would be able to listen for heartbeat and book you for scan. If the bleeding is minimal and you are in no pain you might be best off waiting until tomorrow if GP can get you scan. As you have discovered he way you are treated at 18 weeks as opposed to say 23 weeks is that there is nothing that can be done unfortunately for the baby. They just want to make sure you are well, so there is no sense of urgency unless you are in pain or the bleeding is heavy.

University Challenge is a good distraction, as is Only Connect although it is also very hard! Roll on Monday eh, lets hope GP/MW can listen for heartbeat then refer you for a quick scan, experienced MWs can find heartbeat fairly easily at this stage. Trouble is movement is very here and there at this stage so can't give you an answer either way. Will be on tomorrow to see how you are doing.

Thanks all. Heart beat present yesterday with gp and mat unit told gp I might as well wait til 20 week scan next week. I hadn't thought of it like that, that there's nothing they could do to save the baby at this stage. Makes sense. So looks like bleeding was just one of those things.

my mum was put on bedrest while pregnant with me. she wasnt even allowed to walk to the toilet. i wouldnt be here if she hadnt taken that rest. i have had bleeding in my pregnancies and always took to my bed just to be safe. this pregnancy i had a awful bleed at 9 weeks so obviously stayed in bed and sobbed. went to the scan a few days later found a baby and heartbeat. the next scan at 11+3 (i think) found one healthy baby in sack and a smaller sack no baby no anything. im now 35 weeks and im glad i took to my bed because i believe it saved my little boys life. the fact the heartbeat has been found is very good. take it easy stay on bedrest as long as you are told to and good luck with the rwst of your pregnancy

Glad to hear you heard the heartbeat, and sounds like bleeding has now stopped? Fingers crossed for next week's scan.

babiecakes i had that at 22 weeks too. they thought may waters were leaking aswell so had to do a scan. everything wad fine tho. im 36 weeks on sunday
