Hair 'down there?'

Tmi question about hair down there!

I'm so embarrassed about having any professional down there anyway, even more so now I can't see to shave Confused I can just about manage to keep it tidy, but am a worrying needlessly??

I'm sure midwives see it all, I just keep thinking how awfully ugly it must look down there Blush

I have a sweep booked in for next Wednesday, and all I'm worried about is my hairy bush!!

Words of encouragement would be nice Hmm

I suddenly got concerned about this in my last pregnancy wanted to make an effort for the midwife! I can tell you categorically that having a bikini line wax at 39 weeks pregnant is NOT a good idea! I very nearly asked the lady to stop after one side.

Skiptonlass · 20/02/2015 19:48

Believe me, medical professionals have seen it all! Don't stress about it. I have a wee trimmer (the Lady Thatcher, as the oh calls it) and that keeps my yeti like nether parts a tad neater.

ELA88 · 20/02/2015 19:56

Haha DH has offered to "tidy it up" before I go in! I've not taken him up on his offer yet! I'm a bit concerned he might cut me but I haven't seen my underneath in about 3 months so god knows how bad it looks!!

scratchandsniff · 20/02/2015 19:59

I just go in blind with a razor for my bikini line and a grab and chop for a trim. I like to live dangerously Grin

I know they've seen it all but makes me feel better if I feel the lady garden has had a bit of tidy up.

ELA88 · 20/02/2015 20:03

I might have to have some carefully placed mirrors! Or just go au natural and scare the midwives!

AuntieStella · 20/02/2015 20:09

If you're only days from delivery, then don't do anything. It's too late on, and micro abrasions are a potential route of infection/irritation and you really don't want that going on at the time of delivery.

No one will be assessing whether any part of you is 'ugly'

Chillyegg · 20/02/2015 20:10

I found whilst trimming that 1 or 2 conveniently placed mirrors on the side of the bath work wonders. I use one of those lady trimmers so you don't have the irritating ingrown hair thing.

Showy · 20/02/2015 20:10

I don't wax/pluck/shave.

Is my pubic hair ugly? Is it scary? Is it bad?

All words used on this thread.

Health care professionals don't care about your pubic hair topiary as long as you're clean.

I know you're free to talk about your own pubic hair however you like and do whatever you like to it, but I do find it sad- for me and my dd -that we used horrible terms to describe pubic hair in its natural state. My friend has got back into dating after the end of her marriage and the expectations out there have astounded her. Two men have negatively commented and suggested younger women nowadays don't 'do' pubic hair and it's unattractive to men.

If you want to trim for your own comfort, do it. But don't do it because you think you will be judged for not doing it.

Sorehead · 20/02/2015 20:11

I planned to get waxed at 38 weeks...little sod (love him really!) decided to start making his arrival at 37 weeks so I was au natural AND had hairy legs too Blush No-one commented, and at the time I didn't care.

sianihedgehog · 20/02/2015 20:13

I've got one of these: www.boots.com/en/Wilkinson-Sword-Quattro-For-Women-Bikini-Razor_865538/
You can use the battery powered trimmer blind in the shower, and shave the bikini line fairly easily.

That said, I generally don't bother. No one at any of my four internal scans batted an eye. I very much doubt any midwife is going to be surprised, I'm pretty sure they see all kinds of muffs.

Sorehead · 20/02/2015 20:13

(I did end up with a C Section though due to failure to progress so I wonder if my baby knew what conditions were like 'down there' and decided he didn't want to exit via that route Grin )

VirginiaWoofs · 20/02/2015 20:15

I'm really sad that pubic hair is seen this way! If I was in labour I wouldn't think twice about what my foof looked like (and I doubt the professionals would give a toss either !)

sianihedgehog · 20/02/2015 20:19

Showy I am so with you. I tended to shag younger men a fair bit in my single years (only a few years ago!) and not one single one said that they couldn't deal with my natural hair, although a few expressed surprise that i had it.

I think it's really sad that just being natural is getting to be that unusual that people worry it's gross or weird. :(

Skiptonlass · 20/02/2015 20:20

Showy, you're totally right. I really only trim when I'm swimming (otherwise I have what is charmingly termed a 'pants moustache.' ) hoorah!

Pubes are natural and healthy. I do sometimes trim mine when they get a little wild but really, midwives are not assessing your fluffy parts - if you're ckean, you're grand.

makeminea6x · 20/02/2015 20:20

Can I join the people who really feel sad that you think your body in it's natural state is so horrific.

As a healthcare professional, honestly, I actually find shaven pubic hair hideous. But my opinion doesn't matter. Your vulva, please yourself.

angel24711 · 20/02/2015 20:20

Sorry if this is TMI but...
I won't worry about how it looks, and the midwives wont care either way. But given your going to have to use pads for probably a minimum of 4 weeks of bleeding having short hair done there does make it all a bit more manageable.
I used a lady trimmer yesterday (I'm due with DC2 in 5 days) so it's not a particularly tidy job, but at least what hair there is, is short so it helps with keeping that area feeling clean. Especially if you end up with a few stiches!!

RhiannonElward · 20/02/2015 20:26

When I had my last section I'd been in hospital for 3 weeks before that, and hadn't shaved. Despite the momentousness of the occasion, I did feel a twinge of shame when I heard the deafening sound of the electric razor hacking it's way through my lady jungle. I remember stopping myself from making a joke about how they might need a machete. It is silly and we shouldn't feel embarrassed about being naturally hairy, especially when heavily pregnant.

rubberducky87 · 20/02/2015 20:26

I just squat over a mirror and trim it down. I don't take all the hair off because it can be itchy while its growing back but I like to go swimming and I don't really fancy having four inch hairs sticking out the side of my suit Grin

jazzyjenbo · 20/02/2015 20:31

Well i did have a tidy up before going in with my 2 labours only so I felt more comfortable.
Had time in early labour to get a shower and shave my legs and just did my bikini line really and made sure that the other hair was trimmed... This was mainly to stop the blood sticking so much after and also helped me feel clean... Even though obviously hrs later i was covered in all sorts.
If you would feel more comfortable then keep on top of the shaving, use moisturiser to stop any ingrowing hairs but try not to worry to much, as lots of the ladies have shown theres alot more 'natural' women out there than the media would have us believe.

cosmicglittergirl · 20/02/2015 20:33

I'm due in two weeks and haven't attended to down there in weeks, if not months and I didn't bother last time. I can't imagine the drs or nurses were bothered, I wasn't!

Makemeanappledumpling · 20/02/2015 20:39

Yes, I'm with scratch n sniff.

I go in blind with a razor and go for it. When I was pregnant with DS 2 it grew like a forest and was pretty wild. It needed frequent trims.....so much so that once I hacked so much that DH saw it and proclaimed 'wow....that's some goatee going on down there!'

It looked AWFUL and worst thing was I had an appointment the next day with my Consultant who, on the day, had to do an internal exam.

Embarrassed was not the word.

Dogsmom · 20/02/2015 20:40

Your midwife won't care less what your fanny looks like, she's seen thousands.

As long as you're clean down there she'll be happy.

jennyB123 · 20/02/2015 20:43

I didn't mean to offend anyone by starting this thread. Maybe it is my age I don't know Blush I'm 29 but have always tried to stay tidy down there (never waxed, just trimmed and shaved).

I guess iv never really thought about it until now -knowing I'm going to have many eyes looking at my most private parts and I'm a quiet/shy person. I'm more than happy to leave it natural, trimmed a little, I just wondered what the general feeling was on the topic.

The most important thing is delivering a healthy baby at the end of the day

I'm obviously thinking into it far too much...

Thank u ladies for your replies

I know the midwife etc won't give a shit, but personally for me I feel better if it's a bit neater. Gets to the point that I could probably plait it otherwise Confused

Also with the blood loss after much easier to get clean imo

Strictlyison · 20/02/2015 20:47

One of the first thing I said after my c section was 'I can see my pubic hair!! Oh dear I need a trim...'

I am embarrassed to say that DH helped me shave the upper part of my bits because I was having sections and I didn't want some junior midwife to shave me...
