Hair 'down there?'

Tmi question about hair down there!

I'm so embarrassed about having any professional down there anyway, even more so now I can't see to shave Confused I can just about manage to keep it tidy, but am a worrying needlessly??

I'm sure midwives see it all, I just keep thinking how awfully ugly it must look down there Blush

I have a sweep booked in for next Wednesday, and all I'm worried about is my hairy bush!!

Words of encouragement would be nice Hmm

nicely put Sapat and others - dont need to add to that!

Also, quick warning about hair removal cream, i react really badly to immac etc when i am pregnant - so much so its what alerted me to DC2 as i put some on my legs, reacted and thought "oh, thats odd, that happened when i was pg with DC1" (actually in those exact words... not)

so please check you dont react before slathering your nether regions!

Don't use a method you've not tried before for the first time in pregnancy (especially not in late pregnancy).

Trim if you think you should, as that doesn't touch the skin.

As the campaigners up to the 1980s - who were calling for the final end of compulsory shaving of all women during labour - established, there is no medical advantage (eg healing time) and some downside (infection rate, discomfort) after depilation.

(Though of you know you're having a CS, as for any surgery, removing hair from where any dressings will be stuck (well in advance of the date of the procedure) makes removal of said dressings less painful).

I had to have this rant at pregnancy yoga last week!

The instructor is usually all for the beauty and naturalism of birth, and harps on about affirmations about his amazing our bodies are. I usually switch off as I know I'm having a planned section...

But one of the other mums to be was saying how she's booking her wax at 39 weeks and everyone was nodding along, including the instructor but I had to pipe up and say how the midwifes will not care one jot about the condition of your 'undercarriages'

I was met with aghast faces and imagine they think of me as a right hairy moaner.

I think it's perfectly acceptable for anyone to be worried about being overgrown or not tidy down there, not everyone is as confident, not everyone likes to be on display - fair enough you're going to be in labour and embarrassed, but i honestly would try not to worry.
I'm not happy about anyone seeing my lady bits, i want to be left the hell alone in a dark room until the midwife knows im about to go.
Ive had too many trips to gps/gynaey/colposcopy over the years and men who've preffereed a neat lady garden which knocked my confidence- but its not up to any of them, its about how you feel.
Dont feel pressured by anyone, go with what you feel.
I'll be getting the mirror out and fighting with my epilator for my bikini line, then giving the 'hedgehog' as i currently refer to it as, a trim with my blokes clippers haha.
Dont be pressured, as with anything, its up to you, but midwives really have seen everything so dont stress.

The midwife has seen it all. Big, small, hairy, blad, wonky, 'designer'... She won't care two hoots and only cares about getting baby out safely and stitching you up if needs be. I would say she sees a lot of hairy ones, due to ladies with a big bump not being able to reach! Also, a gynecologist doesn't only deal with pregnant women or women who want a baby. They treat women with problems in that area of all ages, including elderly ones. For instance my gran, who was in her 80s. She has never touched a razor in her life and I'm sure the doc didn't bat his eyes over her foof.

poisonedbypen · 21/02/2015 12:06

It never occurred to me to worry about this. Pubic hair is what humans have. Mind you I'm over 50, so maybe it's only me Smile. Wait until you are post menopausal, it will start to vanish on its own.

Dogsmom · 21/02/2015 12:20

For those who do decide to trim please be careful, I know someone who cut her labia badly as she was struggling to reach around her bump Shock

wigglylines · 21/02/2015 12:31

Honestly, I think this is crazy!

I don't trim my pubic hair, and I'm pretty hairy. Guess what, there are lots of us about, midwives have seen it all before.

And anyway, they deal with life and death situations, and their normal day includes dealing with blood, mums pooing in labour (you know that's a natural part of the birth process, right?), breaking waters etc. They will not be scared of a bit of hair, jeez!

The midwives will be focusing on delivering your baby safely, not what you do with your pubes!

SunnyBaudelaire · 21/02/2015 12:36

why on earth do you think a midwife will give a shiny shit about the length of your pubes?
Jeez I have heard it all now.
How is it 'ugly' or 'dirty' it is there for a reason , to keep the area hygienic.

squizita · 21/02/2015 12:40

I doubt they're bothered in the slightest.
Also it won't look like some centrefold shoot anyway with all the blood, goo and a whole human being being pushed out. Grin

minipie · 21/02/2015 12:46

I am 34 weeks and am trying to keep the hair underneath under control as I don't want it getting in the way of any episiotomy or stitching or blood cleaning that needs to happen. Practical not aesthetic reasons.

The hair on the front is au naturel. I'm not remotely embarrassed about that, any more than I am embarrassed by having hair on my head and eyebrows.

Such a shame that some people feel ashamed of their body in its natural state.

leanne963 · 21/02/2015 16:23

I'm shocked by some of these comments! 'Your not going into a porno!!!' How judgemental. Each to their own. If a woman feel comfortable leaving her bikini like full and natural GREAT! If a woman feels more comfortable shaving GREAT. What does it matter you do whatever is best for you, I agree I doubt the midwife cares at all what is going on with your public hair, but coming in here saying the OP is treating labour like a porno is really offensive to the women who decide to shave.

Yes I will be having a trim before I go into labour. Yes I am aware I am going to have a baby, and a 'porno' didn't even cross my mind. Eurgh I never rant on here but that comment is to judgemental!

M27J5M · 21/02/2015 18:52

I guess I'm going in for a full on porno birthing session going by the judgemental comments in here!! Had a bikini wax today (I prefer more being away for after the birth) and was too busy gabbing that the girl (who's been doing it 13years) took away too much so I'm now bald!! Each to they're own, you all like being au natural that's fine but doesn't mean you can be so rude of the people who decide they don't like leaving it!!
