Had early scan last week and found one Baby with strong heartbeat and another 'possible' baby. Rescanned this morning at 7 weeks. Baby 1 has grown fine and still has strong heartbeat. Baby 2 now has v v v weak slow heartbeat and is considerably smaller than its twin. Sonographer said Baby 2 unlikely to make it and high chance when it doesn't it'll take baby no 1 with it Sad. They have come from same egg and would be identical. Back for rescan again a week today. Has anyone had any experience of this? This pregnancy was a complete shock and would have been baby no 3 for us, then maybe 3&4 and now maybe none. My head is all over the place.

Vanishing twin syndrome is a known thing - it's definitely possible to miscarry one but not both twins (I'm not sure if that's reassuring or not).

Thank you. Yes I've heard of vanishing twin. Is it possible to miscarry one and not damage the other when they are identical though do you know?

I'm not an expert by any means but whilst pregnant with me my mum sadly miscarried my twin. I'm unsure if we would have been identical, I just know it is possible for one to survive.

Wishing the best outcome for you. This must be very difficult. Flowers

Thank you for replying. My heads all over the place today. Mixing this with my already out of control pregnancy hormones is not good. Patience is. It a strong point for me either!

Is NOT a strong point!

I have been through this twice Sad BUT both my pregnancies, one baby survived. First time I didn't know it was twins. I bled from 6-11weeks, this was 16 years ago when they didn't have EPAU's or 12 week scans as standard. I found out one baby had died but was still inside. I was told it would mummifie (it did, into my placenta). Baby twin was born at 40+1 all healthy.
2nd time was my IVF pregnancy, had two embryos put back, both had heart beats at 7 weeks. I had another scan at 8 weeks and one baby had vanished. No bleeding, no pain, no sign. It had reabsorbed. Again the baby's twin was born at 38+3, all healthy.
I really pray for a good outcome for you. ((hugs))

I'm sorry for you sad news. I know of a girl who was expecting twins, one twin died early in her pregnancy but the other twin was born healthy and thriving about 6 weeks early.

Thanks for all these positive stories. They are helping. Feel quite emotional and down today-it's just the not knowing...

Hi OP, sorry you're going through this worrying time. I didn't experience it myself but a friend of my very close friend (who I never met in person) was almost at the end of her 3rd month when one of the twins passed away. My friend doesn't know the details of what exactly happened afterwards, but she does know that her friend is still pregnant with one baby and that everything is fine.

Not sure how reassuring this is but I thought I'd share cause I know it ended well for the 2nd baby even though it happened quite late in pregnancy. Good luck to you! Flowers
