Palpitations - normal in pregnancy or not?

Ive noticed for the past week, on and off I've felt what I think are palpitations. It's mainly after eating and feels like my heart is pounding in my back.
I'm nearly 23 weeks and have felt it 3 times in a week. I had a Google and it seems it can be normal but just wondered if I should mention it to a MW/GP/maternity unit?

I've been experiencing these too and I'm at 24+2 with my second. I don't know if they're normal but I'd definitely mention them to either your gp or midwife. I'm seeing my mw on monday and planned on mentioning them then.

I had palpitations and my midwife told me off for not phoning them but waiting till an appointment a few days later. Even though she said it was ok, she advised not simply ignoring potentially worrying symptoms.

LowLevelBlinging · 20/02/2015 12:14

best to get it checked out, it could be something like anaemia which is fairly easy to treat.

skinnylegs33 · 20/02/2015 12:16

Hey, don't worry, absolutely normal.
I had palpitations before being pregnant too and have had multiple tests etc.
I even had a consultant appointment (dealing with pregnant women with heart issues) and she told me that in pregnancy everyone gets palpitations and some feel them more than others. She actually repeated "everyone" probably just to reassure me.
If you've never had them before or haven't been checked, for your own peace of mind, mention it to the mw, I'm positive she'll say it's normal though.

Well, I've been having palpitations for a few weeks, thought was pretty normal. I've also been breathless, but assumed as I'm 30 weeks that was normal too.

Got blood tests back and I'm anaemic Shock feel a bit silly now!

MissTwister · 20/02/2015 16:14

I've had them since about week 5 - feeling of fast and missed beats that make me jump. I mentioned to MW last week and she couldn't have cared less. She said it was because my heart was working harder - very reassuring! I've also been extremely tired and breathless but she wouldn't check me for anaemia as I didn't have it 10 weeks ago at booking in appt.

sophie150 · 20/02/2015 16:38

Yes although seemed to be worst in 2nd trimester and got better by the third. Similar to others the midwife wasn't concerned as she said your heart has to work harder. Mention it next time you go though.

aneesa28 · 21/02/2015 09:24

Similar to cockbollocks I'm almost 30w and anaemic, and have experienced palpitations and breathlessness since 16w.

I had them in my last pregnancy. They lasted a few months and eventually I was found to be aneamic. As soon as I started Spatone iron supplements it really improved, not sure if there was a connection though. I'd still mention it to your midwife.

Allstoppedup · 21/02/2015 09:27

X-post! Hadn't read everyone else who had it seems to be aneamic too! There must be a link! Grin

Tranquilitybaby · 23/02/2015 22:44

Thanks everyone. Well my mw obviously couldn't care less as I left a message for her on Friday and she still hasn't bothered to call me back!

I haven't had it much over last few days, so hopefully it's nothing x

Ooooh, I get these. They are a bit strange because they feel like thuds in the left hand side of your back?

Weirdly, they are how I knew I was pregnant again as I had them before I missed my first period -- and I remembered them from my first pregnancy. I suspect they may have something to do with blood volume increasing, but don't know for sure.

ISpidersmanYouMeanPirate · 24/02/2015 13:24

I had them in my second pregnancy and despite mentioning them several times to the consultant he never reacted.

At a routine blood test the person taking my blood said it was an odd colour and I needed to be tested for anemia.

The results were negative though (or rather they were slightly positive but my consultant said it was in the normal range for pregnant women Hmm )

gamerchick · 24/02/2015 13:27

Iron and hydration is the first things to check with that symptom. It's usually one or the other.

pinkie1982 · 24/02/2015 13:45

Yes I had them but they have died down now, I expect they will come back. I Googled it too and it seemed normal but I checked with my midwife as well and she said it was fine.
