Can a sexing scan be wrong?!

Okay so I had my 20 week scan today, was convinced it was a boy and the sonographer said it was a girl! I know they can't be 100% but this pregnancy is completely different from my first- she was a girl, I was huge, showed really early, put on lots of weight, had the most awful sickness. This pregnancy I have a tiny little ball on my tummy, have had no sickness and hardly put on anything so far! My gut says boy, I just wanna know if I'm being silly or not! Tia x

How you feel/show in pregnancy has no baring on the sex. They could be wrong but unlikely modern scans are very accurate especially at 20 weeks.

CynthiaDelgado · 19/02/2015 19:03

Well yes of course they can be wrong.

But on the other hand my 4th pregnancy was completely different. I blew up like a balloon. Just totally different from my first 3. Everyone assumed it must be a girl and then out popped ds4.

AnnieMorel · 19/02/2015 19:06

Weight gain/sickness etc has nothing to do with the sex of the baby.

I think the scan is more likely to be correct than not.

Whatabout · 19/02/2015 19:06

It's an anomaly scan, not a sexing scan. They can get it wrong, it isn't always easy to tell and they did get it wrong with my last pregnancy. You can always go for a private scan if you want to slightly later on?

The carrying / symptoms thing is all old wives tales, every pregnancy is different and sounds like you're having a lovely pregnancy, jealous!!!

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 19/02/2015 19:15

Yes they can be wrong. However all pregnancies are different regardless of sex. I'm currently pregnant with second DD (well, told girl at private sexing scan and at anomaly scan) and it's completely different to my first pregnancy.

applecore0317 · 19/02/2015 19:16

I'm carrying all up front and am all bump, had a private scan and am having a girl, my Aunty carried the same as me with her second girl but bigger and more around with her first girl... it's just a myth really

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 19/02/2015 19:16

Ps my first pregnancy was a girl and I was tiny with what looked like a football under my jumper. Not the case this time round!

tumbletumble · 19/02/2015 19:18

It's possible the scan is wrong, but unlikely. More likely you're just having a different pregnancy.

Nicole100 · 19/02/2015 19:30

Thanks for all your replies, I was going to have a 3D scan in a few weeks anyway so will double check there. My gut instinct has never failed me but this time I just sound like a crazy women lol !!

I was convinced I was having a boy second time round - pg exactly the same as with ds.

20 anomaly scan also suggested boy.

I had a girl.

Showy · 19/02/2015 19:44

The difference in pregnancy symptoms is down to the fact that it's a different baby, you're a different age, different environment, different hormone levels etc. I had two identical pregnancies and labours. First a girl, second a boy.

The sonographer is likely right.

Dogsmom · 19/02/2015 19:49

Both my pregnancies have been polar opposites too and I've been told at a private sexing scan and my 20 week scan that I'm carrying dd2, I'm not convinced at all as everything is different but hoping they are as she's due any day and I've fetched all of dd1's things down from the loft for her.

Nicole100 · 19/02/2015 21:00

Be interesting to see what you end up having?? Good luck!

My two dds pregnancies couldn't be any more different and I'd convinced myself 2nd was a boy due to old wives tales of how you carry/sickness etc.
Currently pregnant with 3rd, old wives takes all pointed to a girl but we're having a boy. I'm carrying the same with him as I did the girls just bigger. X

museumum · 19/02/2015 21:27

If they say girl then it could still be a boy but with the penis hiding

But if they say boy then it's very unlikely to be a girl as there's nothing really that can be mistaken for a penis and testes.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 20/02/2015 07:27

Museum I know 2 people who were told boy and it was a girl, not sure how that happened!

Actually the 3 white lines on a girl are quite distinctive and also hard to mistake if they've got a clear view of the area.

Number3cometome · 20/02/2015 10:57

These days with the technology sexing scans are very rarely wrong - however if you are asking at a 20 week scan the sonographer is not likely to take the time to look as closely as a private scan would.

Pregnancies are different. I am 18+5 with DC3 and was convinced it was a girl as this pregnancy is quite like my DD's pregnancy. Turns out it's a boy and there is definitely no mistaking that it has a penis!

My pregnancy with my DS was different, but that may just have been because I was 21 at the time and now I am 34!!

blowinahoolie · 20/02/2015 11:02

That's why I won't be finding out, means you don't have this dilemma.

Number3cometome · 20/02/2015 11:04

No dilemma here, I have scans at 20,24,28,32 & 36 weeks to check yet!

BumWad · 20/02/2015 11:05

Please, it's an anomaly scan

blowinahoolie · 20/02/2015 11:08

Ah, the anomaly scan at the hospital I attend doesn't let you know the sex of the baby when you go. It's against hospital policy which is a relief.

Number3cometome · 20/02/2015 11:08

BumWad

There's not reason you cannot find out the sex? They offer you the opportunity, nothing wrong with taking it.

Number3cometome · 20/02/2015 11:09

blowinahoolie A relief for you maybe, but some people like to know what the sex of their baby is, their is nothing wrong with that.

blowinahoolie · 20/02/2015 11:11

I'm more preoccupied that nothing is wrong with the baby, rather than knowing what sex it is. Just my view, not a dig at others who choose to find out.

Faithope · 20/02/2015 11:11

My friend was told girl and had a boy. It can happen but I guess it's rare? Yes I agree with the term 'sexing scan', it's not, it's an anomaly scan to check baby is growing normally and has no chromosomal abnormalitys, it's not to find out the gender-this is an added extra.
