I am 7 weeks 2 days pregnant and have my first early scan tomorrow for a heartbeat (or beats they put two back!).

I have generally been feeling pregnant, cramps, very tired, boobs have got bigger and hurt plus a little bit of nausea when I wake and constant trips to the toilet but even with all these symptoms I am still worried about the scan tomorrow that there won't be anything there or no heartbeat.

Can anyone give me some guidance on what to expect at the scan tomorrow please (plus some sucess stories!) thanks x

It seems that there are no standard procedures in NHS which is really unfair for us because it creates confusion and uncertainty situation.

I asked also about when I will get the result of the screening and nuchal test, it seems in some places we receive it on the day of the nuchal scan and in others some days later.
Sorry about the urine test result verkey as the girls said nothing best to contact your clinic regarding the progesterone and they will know better about the risks involved if any. I hope in your next test things are clearer and you can chat with your mw regarding pros and cons and appropriate treatment if needed. Nobody is exempt of some complications but let's think that everything has treatment. Good luck!!!!!!

RubySlippers77 · 28/03/2015 10:30

I really thought there would be standard NHS procedures but apparently not!! We have to wait two weeks for the result of our nuchal scan but from what the midwife said, if there are any problems we'll hear from them more quickly - if all is ok, it will take longer. Trouble is of course, we have no idea what timescale 'more quickly' is on….. I could wait two weeks and still be told we need more tests!

Good luck for Monday Verkey, your nurse does sound like a bit of a drama queen!! Even if there is something wrong, isn't it better to keep you calm and reassure you that it can be treated?! I hope it's better news on Monday though xx

I'm feeling very sick today, not usually this nauseous but maybe it's because I had a lie in and hence went longer without food….. if I make it to 15 minutes without scoffing something during the day then I'm doing well! My tummy was making all sorts of odd noises when I woke up. But I did hear this morning that a couple I know have just found out that their third IVF attempt has failed Sad so I am counting my blessings really.

whittlefish · 28/03/2015 11:31

If it helps, and I know different nhs areas do different things, but when I had my scan and blood test for downs they said I would here within 2-5 working days if you are high risk otherwise I think it was 10 working days but we were really lucky and got a letter 4 days later to say we were low risk so guess it just depends.
Sorry to here your feeling sick ruby but prob is lack of food. I ended up awake at 3am this morning starving and had to eat something it's crazy! Hope everyone is doing ok x

anroga · 30/03/2015 11:20

Hi Ruby

The midwife called me Friday evening actually and said I have my booking in appointment this coming Wednesday but then said she is aware of my nuchal scan but is still waiting to hear from the hospital which I just accepted. Then Sat morning I woke and thought I need this scan as it is Easter, I am 13 weeks today and I need it done before 12 weeks so I called them again and they said they will chase it up today. I will call them again later to see what is going on.

I don't think its fair after everything we have all gone through to get pregnant that they are so vague about it all and do not see the urgency and that we do not need the added worry of whether we are going to get a scan in time or not.

Yeah can you believe on top of spending well over the estimated £6K we had to pay £150-00 for each scan on top! What can you do Ruby!

Finally after having to pester the midwifery team I have got my nuchal scan and screening for Tues 7th when I will be 14 + 1 which she has assured me is still within the required period.

Has anyone else found the midwives very blase about it all???

OP posts:
Fabuluce · 30/03/2015 14:52

That's really late and quite frankly unfair and mean of them to be so blasé about it. If things don't go as you'd like and you have to make an extremely hard decision then the later you leave it the harder it is to make that call. How horrid for you Anroga.

Fabuluce · 30/03/2015 14:54

Ps I've got my booking in appointment next Thursday - hopefully my midwife will be less blasé! My doctor has said that I should be consultant led - I'm not sure whether they'll think this is a good or a bad thing!

Fabuluce · 30/03/2015 14:55

Any news Verkey?

anroga · 30/03/2015 16:25

Glad you agree with me Fab as I thought maybe it was me being oversenstive. She was almost irritated and said you have got plenty of time so I said actually I haven't I will be 14 weeks on Monday and I assume the hospital won't be scanning good Friday or Easter Monday??? So relunctantly she said she would chase it and came back to me with that date.

Exactly my point hopefully everything will be fine but I am 38 therefore I am a bit more worried about these things and would like to know ASAP that all is ok, if its not I need time to make a decision.

Its sad after being discharged from my clinic who were all so lovely and
re-assuring my first dealings with the gp and then the midwife haven't been great, hopefully this will change.

Just browsing on the train and came across this thread. I nearly cried out 'Yes!' when I saw your posts Fab! Fantastic!

And I'm 22 weeks today Grin.
(Would love to say after 3 years and 4 cycles that I'm loving it but the truth is I'm rotten; bleed at 6 weeks, admitted to hospital at 8 weeks(N&V), still sick as a dog now, weight loss/gain yo yo, piles, varicose veins etc - you get the picture. IT WILL BE WORTH IT and repeat).

Fabuluce · 30/03/2015 17:10

Omg Res that's amazing!!!!! I'm so pleased for you that you made it after all the heartache and it will definitely be worth it in the end - you're over halfway there! Sorry you've had such a rough time though - just seems mean after all the crap that you've been through to get this far. Is your DH being supportive? Your little one must be thrilled too Grin

I'm not in the 'safe' zone yet but I'm further than I've been before so that definitely counts for something right? I've felt quite pukey but haven't actually vommed yet thankfully although get the dry heaves occasionally which is nice Wink concerned I may end up the size of a house though as the thing that stops me feeling bad is eating - eek! Having said to my DH yesterday that my clothes don't feel tight at all and this is supposed to be when you start feeling it, today my tummy feels really obvious and my top isn't as loose as it was. Eek!

Oh Res I'm so happy for you lovely SmileSmile I lost the Egg Buddies thread and was really sad when I was ready to come back to join and no-one was there anymore!

Fabuluce · 30/03/2015 17:11

Fingers crossed Anroga that your next appointment will be better and, quite frankly, more professional!!

whittlefish · 30/03/2015 17:37

Oh ladies I am so sorry you are having a nightmare with midwives and scans etc. I didnt have the problems you guys have with booking scan appointment ts but I must say I find my midwife very laid back and the staff at the antenatal clinic at the hospital at the most helpful if you have a query. I know what you mean angora though everyone is so lovely and Caring at the clinic and you really feel important and then when you are in the normal system feels a bit clinical again and just a number. Bit of an adjustment that's fore sure.
Well we had our 20 week scan today and all is good and as it should be and we found out we are having a girl, very exciting!

Fabuluce · 30/03/2015 18:54

Wow, 20 weeks - congratulations! And a little girl - it must all feel so real now Smile

gcerron · 30/03/2015 22:06

verkey I hope everything went better today!! Sorry anroga about the delaying fingers crossed this won't have any negative impact, apart of the anxiety and bad moment of dealing with the inefficient sometimes of NHS.
As we concluded NHS has different procedures for a single treatment. I was thinking that being my nuchal scan this Wednesday, I was going to know the result that day, but according your posts it seems that it will take some days or weeks?? Hmm
Fab I booked the harmony test for April 10th, it will be £500 because I am week 13 by then, but probably I won't have NHS results yet, anyway patience .
Congratulations whittle you must be so so relieved now that you confirmed that everything is going perfect and found that you have a beautiful girl! Flowers

anroga · 31/03/2015 11:59

Oh no gcerron more waiting then after I have finally had the nuchal test! Out of interest why are you paying to have the Harmony test when you are having a nuchal scan and screening done on the NHS?

Whittle amazing news you are having a girl I bet you are on cloud 9 now and no more worrying now you have got to that 20 weeks! Well maybe less worrying!

OP posts:
whittlefish · 31/03/2015 14:59

Thanks all I wish there was no more worry but don't think that will go until she is born. They also said that my placenta is currently covering the way out so have to have a scan at 30 something weeks to check its moved otherwise might need a c section ??

anroga · 31/03/2015 15:36

I know the worrying never stops Whittle but you are over a big hurdle now, we all have to try and keep positive about it all even though it is hard. I am in a better place with it since my 10 week scan and reaching 13 weeks, just heading for that scan on Tuesday for more reassurance.

Hopefully your placenta will do what it should over the next few weeks.

Hi anroga mainly because of my age, relying just on NHS won't give me the tranquility that I need, their combined test is 85 % accurate plus it has other downsides. HT provides 95% of accuracy plus is not an invasive test and it tests also Edwards and Patau syndromes in addition to the DS. Because of my age NHS will probably conclude that I am high risk for DS but there's 25% that it's not the case. On the other hand, if for whatever reason they consider my case of low risk there is a 25% that this is not the case either, 25% is a big margin of error. Anyway regarding NHS I prefer to let them do whatever test they want to do as long as it won't risk my pregnancy , if we refuse maybe they will blame us for it if something happens in the future. I will give them the result of the HT as well, because at the end the mw advised us to do the HT if we want a better result.
We have clear with my DH that DS is not our concern but we would like to be well informed and prepare ourselves for our baby and welcome him/her the best we can.

gcerron · 01/04/2015 08:16

Sorry!! Change 25% to 15%. I had the 25% in my mind for other reasons related to my job.
I hope everybody is doing well. Any other updates girls??

anroga · 01/04/2015 16:16

Thanks for filling me in on the HT gcerron out of interest what age are you I am 38 x

You are in the previous range than mine, I'm 41!! So you can understand my concerns!!
By the way surprisingly I had my results today!! I was expecting in two weeks from today that it was my NT, the doctor said no I will give you the results today!! I was so nervous and when I saw my lovely baby and they showed us her brain like a butterfly, her arms, legs, stomach, femur,we listened the heartbeat!! Ohhh my God I wanted to cry but I just hold it there for not to interrupt!!
They said that because it's an IVF they have to consider the due date that my clinic said, then they asked for the day of ET, if it was a fresh cycle or not and the day of EC or the day when the embryo was frozen!! I didn't have this last two answers and the doctor said that they had to discuss about it because they didn't want to give me a false result, so I called my clinic while they were discussing and fortunately I got those days, with that info NHS concluded that my risk is 1:1106, we asked for her opinion about HT and she said "it is a personal choice, it's more accurate than the combined test, less invasive, assess deeply and detects other disorders? yes but only you can decide if you want to go ahead with HT".

Fabuluce · 01/04/2015 23:04

I'm 42 so I'm in the same camp! How brilliant that you got to see your baby today - what a wonderful experience and it sounds like your odds are good!Smile

gcerron · 02/04/2015 15:56

Ohhh yes fab it was a great great moment!! A relief regarding the result yes, but I will do the HT as well. when is your HT? Good luck!!

RubySlippers77 · 02/04/2015 19:04

So happy for you gcerron Easter Grin that's great news!

I'm still considering the Harmony test, I'd actually really like to do it - if nothing else another scan would be much appreciated! - but OH isn't convinced, thinks we'd be better off saving the £££. I have my NT on April 14th but of course might wait another fortnight for results, and even then it might be inconclusive, I'd much prefer to get a more definitive answer more quickly or at least treat it as a second opinion!

The estradiol tablets I had from my IVF clinic run out tomorrow, but I've still got another fortnight's worth of progesterone gel; luckily I had a GP appointment today and she's given me an extra estradiol prescription, as she thinks I should be on both till 12 weeks (I'm 10 weeks at the moment). I did try asking the IVF clinic but they aren't the best at communication…..

I also think I have a consultant appointment next week - I'm supposed to be monitored more closely because we're having twins - but as the hospital haven't confirmed it and I've been given dates of 'ASAP', 13 weeks and 16 weeks as the next time for my appointment, I have no idea what's happening!

A couple of people at work have guessed that I'm pregnant despite me wearing loose tops, they said they'd spotted the bump. I know the doctor said I'd show by this time if it's twins but given how often I'm eating to stop being nauseous, I think the bump is actually mostly extra tummy rather than babies Hmm
