Sciatica making a return?

I've suffered from pretty severe sciatica in the past couple of years. I ended up getting signed off work for 3 weeks and had to hand in my notice and quit my job as that was causing the problem. I've since recovered pretty well.

I'm now 12 weeks pregnant and it seems to be returning. Just on the left hand side. If I sit or lie down for any length of time, my back at the bottom is excruciating when I move and I can't put any weight on my leg for a couple of minutes. Please tell me this isn't going to last the whole pregnancy? Sad

I had sciatica in my right leg from about 16-20 weeks. It was really bad for the first 2 weeks and then eased off and went completely. I'm 32 weeks now and have been fine since, although PGP has kicked in on the other side this week Hmm

Mine comes and goes in pregnancy. Try a hot pack on the actual butt muscle and get your dp to massage it - apparently that nerve actually runs through the muscle causing the problem. I've on the lower back: top of buttock can also help if there's swelling there causing tension. I have been in tears with sciatica so I really feeli your pain.

I used to suffer from sciatica terribly, and was also signed off work various times because of it. I highly recommend yoga, that and exercise really helped me turn a corner with it and I only get the odd twinge now. Pregnancy yoga would be good

Thanks all. Actually really want to give yoga a go but been really ill with hyperemesis so haven't been able to do anything. Will try some exercises when the sickness fades.

When it was at its worse, I too was in tears with the pain. I remember just standing there crying to my OH cos it was too painful to sit, lie down, stand or walk and I just didn't know what to do with myself! Luckily it hasn't quite got that bad yet!

Go to your GP and in pregnancy they should be able to get you an urgent referral for physio, which if it is sciatica returning should hopefully really help.
