Pregnancy of Unknown Location

Hi Ladies,

I thought it was supposed to get easy after that second line came up!

Quick background DH and I have been trying for a baby for just under a year and a half - lmp was 07 December. As my cycles are quite long (35-45 days average)I waited awhile to see if I did actually thing pregnancy could be a possibility. Did a test at home on and in the Doctors w/c 26 January and it was negative. Did a further test on 04 February and there was a faint positive. At the Doctor's that Friday one two more faint positives and sent for a blood test.

That Tuesday back to the Doctor another faint positive and blood test confirms pregnancy but levels were low. Sent to EPU for an ultrasound and it has come back with Pregnancy in Unknown Location! More blood taken and I am waiting to hear back on the results.

Has anybody ever had this? Although I know there probably isn't much hope has anybody successfully come through this?

Unless I ovulated WAY later than anybody could imagine I just can't see any light at the end of the tunnel for this - in good news though the ultrasound did not show up any hints to this being etopic although they have left me with a form and strict instructions to go to A&E if I have any major pain.

Any thoughts/advice/experiences would be greatly appreciated because at the moment all I could do is just sit and cry over it all.

Ok so theoretically you may be very early in pregnancy, in which case they will not be able to see the sack and pole just yet, so will mark it is 'location unknown'

Please try not to worry - unless told otherwise I would assume that the pregnancy is just very early and is too small to see at the moment x

Hello OP, this happened to me. I'm currently 21 weeks
I had a positive test. then a negative at the doctors. So had bloods and early scan at EPU where they couldn't see anything.
They gave me an info sheet on 'pregnancy of unknown location' and prepared me for failing pregnancy, ectopic and warned me it might just be too early. It scared the living daylights out of me! And I convinced myself I was either miscarrying or having an ectopic.
The blood results indicated it was a uterine (sp?) pregnancy but I had to go back in for another blood test and two more scans before they saw it in the womb. And told not to travel in case it ended out being ectopic (EPU's follow quite strict protocol if they can't see the sac in the uterus - but it's precautionary).
Between scans, I found it pretty difficult - so make sure you have support. I also started gettin very sensitive towards my body and I could feel pulling pain. I worried that this was potentially ectopic pain. But I rang the EPU and they were helpful in advising what the pain could feel like which put my mind at rest. So 6 days after being told I had a pregnancy of unknown location they were able to see a sac and yolk in the womb. Two weeks later I went back for another scan and they could see a a blob with a heart beat.
Although my periods have been around 35 days for the last year, I must have ovulated nearer to day 30/31 of my cycle.
I hope you have someone to talk to in real life? That helped me a lot. I sobbed down the phone to a few friends and it helped me deal with the stress of it. It's really tough because it's just a waiting game. Thinking of you and I have my fingers crossed for you xxxx

If you had a faint positive on 4th Feb you were probably around 4 weeks, could be slightly less. Which means at most you will be 5 weeks now and probably just too early to see anything on a scan.

Unfortunately my pregnancy of unknown location ended up as an ectopic pregnancy. When they scanned me at 6 weeks they couldn't see anything anywhere. They scanned me again a week later and still nothing and they finally found the pregnancy in my left tube nearly two weeks later.

To be honest I knew something wasn't right and I had lots of spotting and some pain before things got worse. Yours is very possibly just to early to see yet. But please don't ignore any warning signs, just in case. Good luck and I hope you have lots of support around you as you wait for your next scan x

Thanks for the support and kinds words - my blood test results came back last night and unfortunately the numbers are dropping so I have lost the baby. It is still just a sit and wait game now - need to take another pregnancy test next week to check my levels but I hope in the meantime the MC just happens as I just need to get this over with and try and look to the future. I'm hoping with the levels dropping as they are it is not etopic but am on alert still just in case.

Do you have pcos? Those are pretty long cycles, with 10 day variation.

Thanks ladies - Nat yes I have been diagnosed with mild PCOS which makes my cycles a bit longer (35-45 days average) but since coming off the pill they have been regular and although things did not turn out well this time it gives me a bit of hope for the future.
