Hi, I am 12 weeks 4 days into my pregnancy I am having heavy bleeding and it's mainly when I urinate went to the hospital and wasn't given much hope in this pregnancy continuing. I don't have pain as far as cramping at the moment. Has any one experience that, that they could give me a little more hope.

Can you call the EPU?

Just to reassure you, I had this at 12 weeks and everything was fine, she's 19 months old now! Thanks

What did they do at the hospital? Did you have a scan? How often are you having to change pads?

Crystal049 · 07/02/2015 19:02

I did and went to A&E and was bleeding bright ready and heavy, I panicked and was crying but had a scan the next day at EPU and there baby was kicking and moving and all was fine, they didnt I've me a reason for the bleeding but they said its common and sometimes at 4, 8 and 12 weeks bleeding occurs due to hormonal changes around the time you would have had a period. Don't despair, get a scan. Xx

Erica0815 · 07/02/2015 19:03

Well they just check my cervix they just did an ultra sound and see the baby, from last night till today only 3 times its more when I urinate that I bleed and it's not like a light thing it's pretty heavy, I have no pain which I don't if that is a good thing.

Crystal049 · 07/02/2015 19:04

Was the ultra sound ok?

Erica0815 · 07/02/2015 19:06

What is EPU I have seen that but I am not aware of it

What did the doc say? That's very strange normally when they see baby and hb is strong that confirms there is nothing to worry about?

Stillyummy · 07/02/2015 19:09

EPU- early pregnancy unit.

Crystal049 · 07/02/2015 19:11

EPU is the Early Pregnancy Unit where they scan you.

Stillyummy · 07/02/2015 19:13

I had the same, a few days after I had my scan and had told everyone we were expecting. My baby is fine, we are at 25 weeks pregnant now and though I had 2 more small bleeds it all seems to have settled down. I would go to the Dr or EPU and ask for/demand a scan. Other than that, stay in bed, watch crap telly and be kind to yourself. Xxx

Crystal049 · 07/02/2015 19:14

Still yummy when did you have your two further bleeds, that's what I'm apprehensive about, I bought a Doppler to listen to hb in case I get scared.

Erica0815 · 07/02/2015 19:16

I did look EPU but I don't find a location is California, yes the hospital we went to just got the ultra sound heart beat was strong my cervix is closed but they can't say why I'm bleeding. They just said to go to my obgyn on Monday she could tell me more

Erica0815 · 07/02/2015 19:20

I have seen the Doppler are they easy to use and find heart beat. I did hear his or her heart beat, that gave me hope but the doc didn't the nurse right away gave me no hope with the baby being saved she just said be ready for what's going to come ur going to cramp and and baby will come out I mean that broke my heart and the little hope I had at the moment was shattered

Poor you. I've had this with two different pregnancies. The first time I bled for ages, I had a scan and all was ok. I bled almost throughout that pregnancy. They had a look at my cervix and saw a small red patch called a cervical abrasion, and basically everytime I did a bit too much, had a cough or went to the toilet it would bleed again. Baby was fine.

The next pregnancy I had it again. I was unconcerned because I thought it was obviously the cervical abrasion playing up again. I did have a scan but it was a bit too early to see a heartbeat, the bleeding continued, got worse, and then I lost it about three weeks later.

So it could go either way unfortunately, keep positive and rest. You can't change the outcome, and you didn't cause this. Fingers crossed that it's nothing x

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 07/02/2015 19:34

Just read your last post. Oh I'm sorry to hear that, it's so upsetting, but if they said there's no hope then they're probably right unfortunately, they see this all day long. They say 1 in every 3 pregnancies end in mc. It's no consolation, though. Is this your first pregnancy?

LittleBairn · 07/02/2015 19:43

I'm suprised at their attitude its not uncommon for women to bleed in pregnancy, some even continously.
I've had heavy bleeding in two of my pregnancies.
I'm currently 30 weeks pregnant, at 9 weeks I had heavy bleeding and cramping baby was clearly fine.
Often there is no reason for bleeding, the two common issues that are sometimes found is cervical erosion (I don't know much about this) and a placenta Hematoma. I had that in my 2nd pregnancy I was told it was harmless. I just had two huge bleeds but no pain.
Once a heartbeat is found at 9 weeks the chances of loss after that is 1%.

LittleBairn · 07/02/2015 19:54

Sorry Erica I've just seen you latest post. When you are ready there is a really good Miscarriage board on MN that is great for support and advice.

Stillyummy · 07/02/2015 20:00

I had one at 15 and one at 18 weeks. Each time they were lighter. They were all terrifying, but less so as I learned what to expect. None of them were at all painfull. X

Erica0815 · 07/02/2015 20:00

Yes it's my first, they gave me no reason on why I could be bleeding, aside my pregnancy levels being very low but I mean idk what that really means, idk if not beingin pain is a good or bad thing, I know they don't want to give hopes up so they rather be cold

OP posts:
LittleBairn · 07/02/2015 20:43

Did they only use a Doppler? It's pretty difficult at that gestation to find a HB so I would not put to much weight in a Doppler alone. I was in hospital from 21-26 weeks the midwives used a Doppler twice a day to find the earth eat and even at that gestation they sometimes had problems finding it.

LittleBairn · 07/02/2015 20:47

Levels being low, that sounds like they took blood and measured your hormones? I think to be accurate they need to test the levels a few days apart to see of they are rising like they should be in pregnancy.
Having low hormones would worry me more than the Doppler. But like many things our bodies all react different in pregnancy yours may just be rising slower.

Erica0815 · 07/02/2015 21:27

Yeah i am suppose to return within 48 hours and get test done again

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 07/02/2015 23:27

Well, sometimes you can bleed from the cervix being irritated, as I said. Sometimes from having a low placenta which covers the bottom of the womb. All those blood vessels etc can easily come away a bit and cause a bleed. And then again, yes it can be a miscarriage.

If your hcg levels are low at this stage it doesn't sound positive, but only time will tell. The hospital staff often are quite cold if it looks like you're losing it before 20 weeks, as there's nothing they can do to change what's happening. It's a shame they're like that, but I suppose they don't want to give false hope. :(

As someone said there's a great pregnancy loss board here if you need it. You may need to talk and talk about it to process it in your head, it's a great place to do that as they're all in the same boat. Family and friends sometimes don't know what to say, or say the wrong thing.
