12 week scan worries for a first timer!

I'm 29 and have my first scan (12 weeks) tomorrow. This is my first ever pregnancy and am feeling nervous at the unknown.

My main worries are that I haven't had many typical first trimester symptoms apart from a bit of tiredness, slightly sore boobies earlier on and gaining weight around my tummy. No morning sickness at all. I think I'm worried that, due to the lack of symptoms, we will get there tomorrow and when they do the scan there won't be a baby in there.

Also, at my first MW appt I was weighed and given a bmi that was over the healthy weight. I'm typically a size 16 (now more 18), who carries weight around my tummy, and have heard that it can be hard to get a decent US scan with overweight women. My letter also says to come with an empty bladder when a lot of the info says it can be easier to get a good scan with a full bladder.

Am I worrying over nothing?

dont worry, i think everyone feels like that when they go for their first scan. as you say, its the unknown! i didnt get any symptons at all, and i felt like such a fraud like i was pretending to have a baby rather than being pregnant for real.

i was also a size 16-18, and they picked the baby up fine. you need a full bladder when you go for your scan, if you havent drunk enough they make you go outside and drink more before coming back in. i am now 34 weeks and only just feeling real for me now! but i do remember the agonsing 12 week wait for the scan.

Honestly do not worry about lack of symptons, count yourself as one of the lucky ones that you didnt have your head down a toilet for weeks!

Thank you, I think I'll take a bottle of water with me and see what they say! I'm sure I'll be fine once I get there! Smile

Hi Luce, I am in the same boat and have my first scan tomorrow too! Also worried, but trying to stay positive! I've worried a lot about there being no heartbeat, I don't know why really, I think sometimes I try and prepare myself for the worst which isn't always the best way! I'm actually really excited now! Good luck tomorrow and enjoy seeing your little one for the first time!!Flowers

I think it's natural to worry.

I had a scan at 7 weeks and was convinced that they'd tell me there's no baby in there!! But there it was :)

Also, I'm a size 22 and they no probs seeing the bubba through my wobbly bits.

Hope it all goes well.

Perfectly normal! I had an early scan with the ivf and was still convinced by the 12 week that they'd tell me it was all a cruel joke (even though id felt hideously nauseous for the intervening weeks). Prepare to be blown away by what you can see-it is amazing.

And as for the bladder, my hospital also insist on an empty bladder and actually send you off to empty it as they take you in to be scanned so don't worry.

Good luck to you both having scans today

I have my scan today.... bricking it. I had a blighted ovum last time discovered at 8 weeks. This time I have held out til 12 weeks. I have no reason to think anything is wrong.

I have been told to drink a litre of water an hour before.... I will be wearing a tena lady pad.... because as well as the fear of something being wrong, I am also scared of wetting myself!
