Placenta Praevia - did yours move?

croon979 · 31/01/2015 09:26

I am 22 weeks pregnant and had a scan this week which confirmed that my placenta is low and anterior - Grade II (extending to cervix). The sonographer and midwife both told me not to worry and that in the vast majority of cases the placenta moves out of the way as the uterus expands (particularly for Grade I or II anterior praevia).

I am someone that likes to be prepared and am a bit of a nightmare for googling to try and research to be informed (well aware of the dangers of doing this but, hey, call it an affliction....).

I will not be devastated if I need a c-section, I would just rather know the score so I can mentally prepare for that possibility. I am due to be rescanned at 34 weeks to check positioning and baby growth then. Have been told in the meantime to refrain from sex and most forms of exercise.

I was just wondering if anyone has been in a similar position and was willing to share whether, in your case, the placenta moved (and in the right direction!) or whether it stayed put?

Any advice gratefully received.

Mine shifted too- was graded as 3-4 at 20 week scan but had moved right out of the way when I had a scan again at 28 weeks. Apparently 90% do move so try not to worry

croon979 · 31/01/2015 10:26

Thanks Lucky, that's really reassuring :)

mine moved too, both pregnancies Smile

Cisforcat · 31/01/2015 13:18

Yep mine moved ! ( was never told to refrain from sex or exercise though!)

Marchhairy · 31/01/2015 13:22

Mine moved. DS didn't though and stayed breech which apparently was to do with where placenta was to stop him turning.

Gemzybelle · 31/01/2015 13:39

Mine was a grade 4 at 24 weeks and had moved by 29 weeks. Most do move I think. Good luck Smile

Pinkseren · 31/01/2015 15:06

Mine moved despite my being told by two separate consultants that this was very unlikely (previous c section and placenta completely covering the os). Can't tell you how overjoyed I was at 32 week scan to see it had completely moved out if the way. Try not to stress (as I did). All the best.

RhiannonElward · 31/01/2015 15:10

Mine didn't but most do. grade 2 should move alright, I had a Grade 4 and got stuck with it. Fx for you Smile

makesomenoise · 31/01/2015 15:25

I'm 26 wks and was told the same at my 20 wk scan, also was told not to have sex or intimate examinations! Roll on 34 wk scan to see if it has moved, although I am booked in for a section anyway, I think my dh would appreciate it moving!

AntsMarching · 31/01/2015 15:27

Mine moved.

blondie1001 · 31/01/2015 15:42

Mine did!

I wasn't diagnosed with PP till I started to bleed at around 31 weeks. Multiple bleeds, 5 weeks in hospital, c-section. But all fine. I was told many times that almost all women with PP identified at 20 weeks find that the placenta moves and there are no problems. So key message - wait and see, try not to worry. Best wishes

Happilymarried155 · 31/01/2015 16:26

Mine moved too :)

ChocolateHelps · 31/01/2015 16:36

DD1 - full pp. Bleeds at 25weeks (had steroid injections in case she was born then, they really hurt!), 32weeks and 37+5. C section at 38 weeks. I had plenty of time to get my head round the c section. Sounds scary but we only live 5 mins from hospital. Most pp's do move up out the way. Obv if you get any bleeding you get yourself to hospital as soon as poss. Don't drive yourself like I did the last time! Without hospital bag! Had got quite blasé about it all by then.

No sex allowed after the first bleed. Due to c section managed to resume sex life at 2 weeks Smile

DD2 also pp at 22 wks but moved out of the way and had a very enjoyable VBAC at 42+3!! Took a lot longer to resume sex life that time round!

Good luck. Be patient. Look forward to meeting your little one

Thanks so much everyone. Will definitely take it easy and try and be patient!

Mine didn't but was posterior and they are less likely to move apparently.
DS born at 36+3 so not too prem. I had lots of bleeds and had the steroids at 32w.

croon979 · 01/02/2015 09:12

Thanks Backtreacle - yes I have read that posterior is less likely to move due go the way the uterus usually expands, although nothing is for sure.

Mine moved! Had a 4d scan at 27weeks and it was well out the way :) and mine is sitting posterior as well.

Xx

hideandsqueak · 01/02/2015 19:37

Grade 2 posterior. Didn't move. Had a few bleeds including one where they started prepping me for theatre at 32 weeks but had steroids and made it to 37 weeks. When I had my 20w scan they didn't tell me about the sex and exercise! Wish they had!

croon979 · 01/02/2015 19:49

To be honest it was them telling me to refrain from sex and exercise which made me more concerns than I may otherwise have been as it seems like lots if others with low-lying placentas aren't told this unless their placenta is completely covering.

.

I'm watching this with interest. This is my 3rd pregnancy and 3rd placenta previa.

My first pregnancy, placenta didn't move (posterior) but pregnancy ended at 22 weeks and had Vaginal delivery despite placenta touching cervix (lost 1.7 litres blood).

My second pregnancy placenta was anterior and moved- but ended up with EMCS and lost 3.5 litres (due to position of DD and extra incision they had to make).

I've now got a posterior placenta which is partially covering cervix. Although I have to have c-section whatever really hoping it moves- could do without risk factor for increased blood loss.

It's been encouraging to hear that some posterior placentas have moved. Smile

jackandjilly · 02/02/2015 10:37

Mine moved tooSmile

croon979 · 02/02/2015 13:33

Thanks Jackandjilly. Lots of encouraging stories.

Hi Iwantkhaleesis..! ! Thanks for your experinces with your first two pregnancies.

I think I am more worried about the situation where it moves but not by much so the placenta is still fairly low, I try for a natural birth and then have PPH and/or baby gets stuck. 2cm clearance whcih I think is what the hospital go by does not sound like a great amount of room to me! EMCS would be the least desirable outcome IMO.
