Placenta Praevia - did yours move?

croon979 · 31/01/2015 09:26

I am 22 weeks pregnant and had a scan this week which confirmed that my placenta is low and anterior - Grade II (extending to cervix). The sonographer and midwife both told me not to worry and that in the vast majority of cases the placenta moves out of the way as the uterus expands (particularly for Grade I or II anterior praevia).

I am someone that likes to be prepared and am a bit of a nightmare for googling to try and research to be informed (well aware of the dangers of doing this but, hey, call it an affliction....).

I will not be devastated if I need a c-section, I would just rather know the score so I can mentally prepare for that possibility. I am due to be rescanned at 34 weeks to check positioning and baby growth then. Have been told in the meantime to refrain from sex and most forms of exercise.

I was just wondering if anyone has been in a similar position and was willing to share whether, in your case, the placenta moved (and in the right direction!) or whether it stayed put?

Any advice gratefully received.

I would discuss it with your midwife /consultant. May make a difference if you plan on flying or not??

Our little boy was born safely yesterday by c-section and is doing well in the neonatal, only on a little oxygen! Thanks for your thoughts x

croon979 · 06/02/2015 08:08

Congratulations Capthcath, fab news. Glad you and baby doing well.

Congratulations! Enjoy your lovely new baby Grin

Purpleflamingos · 06/02/2015 08:19

Mine moved at around 36 weeks.

Purpleflamingos · 06/02/2015 08:19

And congratulations.

iwantkhaleesiseyebrows · 06/02/2015 11:27

Congratulations - what wonderful news Grin

Croon - I'm only getting Eurostar and consultant said ok to travel if I don't bleed. I'm just become in case I do have a bleed while there

croon979 · 07/02/2015 08:16

Yes with Eurostar you should be absolutely fine. Just make sure you don't overdo it I guess :) x

Good grief, this thread has slightly terrified me.

Had my anomaly scan today & my placenta is anterior, and 16mm from the cervix - apparently they want it to be 2cm away? Everyone seemed to think it wasn't a big deal, said that 90% of cases it moves, and will re scan at 34 weeks. Didn't say anything about no sex or exercise, should I be avoiding these or is that for cases of full placenta previa?

Hi Sophie - I am grade II and don't have full previa (my placenta is touching cervix but not covering cervix apparently) but doctor has told me no sex and no real exercise. It does seem as though not everyone is advised this - guess every person and placenta is different. Maybe ring your midwife/consultant and check?

It is rather scary actually. I am trying to take it as easy as I can which is difficult with my job. Beyond working and coming home and relaxing, I am not doing much else at the moment.

Just be vigilant and, if you start to bleed, go to hospital immediately, I was also told this and Miele72, I guess your story is the reason why.

Congratulations Cape! Well done.

I am nearly 25 weeks now, no bleeding, with complete covering (2cm over) band it is placenta posterior but honestly have no idea what I am meant to do or not to do really. The community midwife who was newly qualified was clear she didn't really know either when I had to stop travel, work, exercise but booked me a consultant appointment this week so will hopefully know more then. The uncertainty and not being ready yet is a real worry but just carrying on as normal for now...

croon979 · 08/02/2015 20:05

If you have complete covering I would be surprised if you would be advised to continue with exercise and sex. I would definitely try and speak to your doctor/consultant. As long as there is no bleeding you should be fine and can largely carry on as normal I think. The conflicting advice everyone gets is confusing.

My placenta is low but no mention of measurements, so guessing it's not that close. I'm going back at 34wks for another scan. No mention of not doing stuff.

iwantkhaleesiseyebrows if you do go to DLP, make sure your insurance covers not only you but also treatment for your baby, should you need it. Not wanting to scare you at all, but some policies don't automatically cover the baby even if they cover the pregnant mum. DD had an amazing time at DLP at 4.5yo, so yours would have a brilliant time if you deferred it. DD still talks about it now and loves looking at our photos.

MrsDumbledore · 08/02/2015 20:32

I had a low lying placenta with dd at 20 weeks, which had moved by 30 weeks. I can't remember the details though, and definitely wasn't told I had to be careful though or avoid anything, so maybe it was different to yours.

Craicalack · 09/02/2015 00:04

Congrats Cape, I hope your wee man is doing well! Thanks

I'm 33 weeks now, no more bleeding since leaving hospital and scan is this Friday. Grin

Sophie I was exactly the same as you. Scan at 20 weeks said placenta was low, I wasn't warned not to do anything. Was told it'll move up itself and they'll scan me when further on. I began bleeding at 29 wks, not heavy but bright red at first and then brown staining, it eased off then became red again at 31 weeks. Scan at 31 weeks showed that the placenta was 13mm from cervix but baby's head was resting/bouncing on the edge of it and making it tear. The worry is that it would get bigger and I'd bleed out, so have been told to take it easy. Just be vigilant and get straight to the hospital at any sign of fresh blood, but as others have said it may cause you no problems at all! Thanks

iwantkhaleesiseyebrows · 09/02/2015 08:44

My notes just say 'low posterior' but I asked the sonographer how low and he said it was about 16mm over cervix. I'm not sure whether they officially grade at 20 weeks as so many move.

I did call insurance and baby would be covered. Still very much in two minds - today I'm thinking I will just cancel. I've booked private scan for 7th march so trying now to put it out of mind until then but easier said than done!

iwantkhaleesiseyebrows · 09/02/2015 08:45

Ps thanks to everyone for all your comments and posts. Finding this thread very comforting to know im not alone. Thanks for starting croon

croon979 · 10/02/2015 22:00

No problem, I have found it comforting too.

So, am now into my 23rd week, one week of sex ban down! It's going to be a long few months....!

iwantkhaleesiseyebrows · 11/02/2015 15:10

Croon I sympathise. We are only just over 2 weeks into our ban and it feels an awful lot longer ....

croon979 · 12/02/2015 14:26

so, little update, have been to see midwife for routine appointment today. She has given me much more info about my placenta. Basically, I had self-diagnoed Grade II from my notes which say "extending to cervix". However, midwife had access to my more detailed notes and said it clearly states in those that the placenta is partially covering my cervix at the moment, so I am actually Grade III :(.

It does explain a bit more about why I have been told no sex, exercise etc now...

Still obviously nothing I can do but wait and see. However, obviously the higher the grade the more chance of a bleed and less chance of moving sufficiently. Sigh.....

zippygeorgebungle · 13/02/2015 21:09

It's strange, I had a consultant appointment this week (well, it was a registrar). Mine is grade four and completely covering, 2cm over, but he was very relaxed about it. It probably won't move but he said I could still fly, exercise, travel.

I'm going to take a very cautious approach nonetheless though!

good luck everyone.

Craicalack · 13/02/2015 21:55

Update from me!

Scan today at 34 weeks, placenta has moved up but not enough. Is 1.53cm from OS, another scan in 2 weeks time!

I'm not hopeful to be honest and preparing myself for a section but at least there's no more bleeding Grin

AuditAngel · 14/02/2015 12:56

I have had full Grade 4 placenta Praevia twice, anterior with DD1, with DD2 it went from poaterior all the way up to the top of my bump at the front. The surgeon said it was the biggest he had ever seen Grin

With DD1 I was given no advice whatsoever. I was admitted at 33+3 with bleeding, sent home after 48 hours, but re admitted within 24 hours. I was kept in until ELCS at 37+4

With DD2 I asked at 13 week scan if they could see the location of the placenta. I was told no, meaning top it bottom, and DH and I guessed PO again. I was diagnosed at 21 week scan, packed my bags immediately after my experiences with DD1. I was admitted at 24 weeks, 26 weeks, three times at 31 weeks, then kept in at 32 weeks. ELCS booked for 37 weeks, but ended up with EMCS at 36+1

With DD2 I was given very different treatment to DD1. Immediate appointment with consultant, banned from flying/sex/lifting/pushing shopping trolley etc.

Happy to answer any questions.

I think I saw every medical student in West London, total admission DD1 4 weeks, DD2 6 weeks.

coastergirl · 14/02/2015 14:47

Mine has moved. Was low at the 20 week scan, scanned again this week at 34 weeks and it's out of the way.
