Placenta Praevia - did yours move?

croon979 · 31/01/2015 09:26

I am 22 weeks pregnant and had a scan this week which confirmed that my placenta is low and anterior - Grade II (extending to cervix). The sonographer and midwife both told me not to worry and that in the vast majority of cases the placenta moves out of the way as the uterus expands (particularly for Grade I or II anterior praevia).

I am someone that likes to be prepared and am a bit of a nightmare for googling to try and research to be informed (well aware of the dangers of doing this but, hey, call it an affliction....).

I will not be devastated if I need a c-section, I would just rather know the score so I can mentally prepare for that possibility. I am due to be rescanned at 34 weeks to check positioning and baby growth then. Have been told in the meantime to refrain from sex and most forms of exercise.

I was just wondering if anyone has been in a similar position and was willing to share whether, in your case, the placenta moved (and in the right direction!) or whether it stayed put?

Any advice gratefully received.

coastergirl how low was yours at 20w, out of interest?

cunexttuesonline · 14/02/2015 21:39

Mine wasn't diagnosed until a bleed at 28 weeks, it's posterior and partially covering the cervix. I am back for another scan on wednesday with the consultant (35 weeks). Have been banned from sex :( but have had no further bleeds. I am hoping it is out of the way when I go for the scan but from what I have read here that is maybe not that likely if it was low at 28 weeks and is posterior. Will update after!

coastergirl · 14/02/2015 21:58

bullseye They didn't tell me, and in my notes it just says "low lying placenta, re-scan at 34 weeks".

dy14 · 14/02/2015 22:45

I got told at my 20w scan I had a 'low lying placenta' and I asked my midwife where exactly is it as the sonograper didn't explain it really and she said its completely covering the cervix. so im presuming grade 3/4 I have. I am now 25 weeks and have another scan at 32 weeks. I was soooo scared when reading about it online and I am anxious incase I bleed especially if it happens when im at work or out somewhere. but just try and be positive I think its quite common but not very well recognised I didnt no what it was anyway untill I got told I had it and this is baby no3! - im watching the thread for similar stories also Smile Smile x

Auditangel, with your experience do you have any general advice on what is best regarding not travelling etc? Also, the consultant said to me the bleeding was likely to start slowly at first so give me time to contact the hospital, but is that your experience?

I think the thing I am very worried about is the risk of hysterectomy during the C section or after, as this has been mentioned but I don't know how (un)likely it is.

Sorry to hear you had such a difficult time, by the way.

croon979 · 18/02/2015 15:32

best of luck all, it does make you feel like a bit of a ticking time bomb but I think as long as you take it easy and are aware of what to be alert for, mostly the outcome/prognosis is very good.

coastergirl - I also have a placenta which is partially covering the cervix (although anterior) and have a rescan at 34 weeks which seems to be a standard rescan timeframe.

Zippy - I think that the risk of hysterectomy largely is when there is a case of placenta accreta which is much more serious.

I don't think mine can have been too bad, as I wasn't give any advice on things to avoid, just had the re-scan at 34 weeks. The sonographer pressed down quite hard on baby's head to make him move upwards a bit, so she could check if there was any placenta under his head. It wasn't painful or anything though.

cunexttuesonline · 18/02/2015 17:32

I had my scan today at 35 weeks and placenta is still low lying, I have to go back in 9 days to see what it is looking like then and if it is the same as today I will be booked for a c section. Anyone have any experience of similar?? Is it likely to change much in 9 days?

croon979 · 19/02/2015 10:17

sorry to hear that it has not moved so far. I do hear that they can move pretty late on as it is your lower part of your uterus that expands last. However, if not the good thing is that they are monitoring you closely and have a plan for a CS. Best of luck x

Just checking in to see if any updates? Hoping those pesky placentas get a move on up ...

croon979 · 24/03/2015 08:40

So, I have an ultrasound today at 9.30am actually to check on a few other things but they are going to check placenta position at same time. I am 29 weeks today and was told partial previa at 22 weeks. We will see if it has moved and if so by how much.

Mine moved, good luck

TheHumanSatsuma · 24/03/2015 08:50

Yes, mine did. Last scan at 32 weeks showed it had moved. Had a normal delivery at 41 weeks, but did bleed a lot. Son and I were fine. He is a hulking 22 year old now!

dy14 · 24/03/2015 14:21

Good luck today! - I have my scan at 32weeks next week to check placenta and babys positioning as he was lying oblique a few weeks ago. so doubt anything has moved but hopefully Smile Smile

MissTwister · 24/03/2015 16:12

I was told i have a low lying posterior placenta reaching cervix. I've been given no advice at all on sex/ exercise etc. Sonographer said there were no implications apart from c section and didn't even mention bleeding risk.

I made an appointment with GP as my MW appt wasnt for another 5 weeks and she said no restrictions but maybe try 'gentle sex'!!! She also said any bleeding would start small so not to worry about holiday away.

This thread has now worried me again!!!

croon979 · 24/03/2015 21:16

Overjoyed to report that my placenta has move well out of the way not to be a nuisance - really surprised and thrilled! Baby was lying obliquely last week and is breech this week so I am not sure that the lie of the baby is always indicative.

Croon - that's great news Grin very pleased to hear of some positive stories

farmerswifey · 30/03/2015 13:05

Mine was diagnosed as 'reaching the OS' at 20 weeks - rescanned today (34 weeks) and it is now high up, completely out of the way and baby is head down. I couldn't be happier!

I wasn't told to avoid anything at 20 weeks, but to go straight to hospital if any bleeding. I was also told by the consultant, not to lose any sleep over it as almost all placentas move (easier said than done, but she was right)

WindYourBobbinUp · 30/03/2015 13:50

Mine moved. The wrong way!
I was told nothing about bleeding etc as they kept saying it would be fine. Delivered DS at 36 weeks after a massive bleed in week 35.
Most do move though but do pack your bag in case of a hospital stay. Trust me...you don't want DP DH packing it!

dy14 · 03/04/2015 12:51

mines has stayed low another scan in 3 weeks time 36w to see how it is. (if I make it.to then, have heard can bleed and end up in hospital by then) fingers crossed! so glad ur moved out the way thats great Smile

iwantkhaleesiseyebrows · 21/04/2015 18:18

Not sure if anyone still watching this thread but just in case it helps in future I wanted to say that my grade 2 posterior placenta has moved at 32 week scan (was still covering cervix at 28 week scan)- so stay positive ladies in the same boat...
