What's the best bit about having a newborn?

I'm 21 weeks pregnant with my first DC and have heard nothing but horror stories and birth, having a newborn and how I won't ever have time to have a shower or tidy my housemate, EVER AGAIN!! Grin I absolutely accept this, I just want to hear something good about saving a newborn.

Tell me some lovely things about having a newborn, please?

When you pick them up and they kind of scrunch up their legs and stick out their bum. It's so cute.
Also when they do a hungry cry and their tiny arm jerks out wards and then towards their mouth as if to show you where the milk goes.

I found newborn stage so so hard. But it still was wonderful.
The way DS would snuggle up on my chest with his wee chubby face squashed against me. Tiny hands and tiny feet. The smell of his head. That feeling of holding a tiny little person, new life, in your hands.
God I'm so broody.

dimdommilpot · 30/01/2015 22:28

The falling asleep on your chest and sleeping cuddles! I miss that. DD2 is now 9month and is a total fidget bum so will never sleep on me again.
Newborns are lovely and snuggely and squishy and they really do grow up way too fast so sod the housework, forget to shower and enjoy every second of the bewborn stage :)

Ellypoo · 30/01/2015 22:36

Can't beat newborn snuggles when they just curl into you!

Postchildrenpregranny · 30/01/2015 22:40

Their hands and feet . Like little starfish

DustBunnyFarmer · 30/01/2015 22:47

They're very portable.

This ^. You will probably feel shattered, but do make the effort to eat out if you can, as you can feed 'em up (boob/bottle) and plonk them back in their car seat while you eat your dinner. By the time they are weaned & sitting in a high chair you will be bolting any meals in restaurant in the hope you'll get out of the restaurant before all hell breaks loose. The toddler/pre-school stage is even worse, as they develop escapee skills.

I do love wispy, fluffy baby hair.

Everything. Everything about having a newborn is utterly wonderful.

I remember lying in bed with Dp and ds on the day he was born, knowing that dd was safely tucked up in bed with her grandma in the next room thinking life didn't get much better......

pepitoincognito · 30/01/2015 22:53

congratulations on your pregnancy. yeah everyone gets really friendly and talks to you in the street - that's nice. and if you are lucky, you get some lovely gifts for your baby, which you get to open. and you feel quite proud looking at them, and thinking - I did that.

Do not try and clean your house. I showered every day so that non showering bit is not necessarily true in all cases.

byhec · 30/01/2015 22:55

They are so snuggly and their smiles are the best x

blizy · 30/01/2015 22:57

Their wee froggy legs, soft fuzzy hair long sleepy snuggles, funny wee grunts and noises, the "wind" smiles, milk drunk faces and so much more!
I'm currently sat with my 15 day old DS snuggled up on my chest, mist amazing feeling ever.

FamiliesShareGerms · 30/01/2015 23:00

Having an excuse not to get dressed

General awesomeness (I still don't get how DS was made, then inside me, then came out...)

whereismagic · 30/01/2015 23:01

The way they smell at the nape - utterly addictive.

FamiliesShareGerms · 30/01/2015 23:02

dimdom non-cuddly babies can turn into cuddly toddlers Smile

HungerKunstler · 30/01/2015 23:02

The way they sleep so peacefully on you after feeding.

The way they stay in one place after you put them down ( unlike older babies who can crawl / roll off into all kinds of danger, which is nerve-wracking!)

Getting to have a conversation or watch TV or read a book around them compared to toddlers who will never let you eat a meal, pick up your phone, talk or watch anything ever again. It's really hard to get time to yourself as a couple once they grow out of the newborn phase so enjoy it while it lasts!

rockybalboa · 30/01/2015 23:07

They smell nice, fall asleep on your chest and are lovely and snuggly.

Lovelydiscusfish · 30/01/2015 23:12

The sheer, utter beauty of your own baby. I used to look at dd, and be lost in wonder - she was so beautiful it hurt my heart to look at her.
I look at her newborn photos now, and can see she looked a little like E.T.
Thankfully, she is now The Most Beautiful Toddler Ever.
And so on, and so on, I imagine (and hope), until I am weeping about her beauty on her wedding day, regardless of what she objectively looks like.
Maternal blindness. Wonderful stuff.

peacefuleasyfeeling · 30/01/2015 23:28

You'll have a summer baby, that in itself is lovely. Lazy, long days of playing 'adoring the infant', aaah. Just don't spoil it by worrying about things like not getting into 'bad habits', etc. Enjoy!

Hakluyt · 30/01/2015 23:36

You have to gaze at them for hours- or they don't grow. Thwt's very important.

Hakluyt · 30/01/2015 23:42

Lovelydiscusfish- I currenlty have the most charming, funny, empathetic, thoughtful gorgeous 13 year old, and the cleverest, wittiest, prettiest, most talented and most loving 19 year old. So I am sure you dd will be the most beautiful bride ever. --apart from my dd obviously-

EugenedeRastignac · 31/01/2015 01:25

They are cute, they are cuddly, they smell of milk. It is lovely to breastfeed them, because they are small (different with toddlers, they sort of 'top up' their drink intake).
Every newborn is perfect and beautiful. Soft skin, downy hair, big eyes.

Coyoacan · 31/01/2015 02:11

Haven't read everything, but newborns are so beautiful. I think looking into their eyes, seeing their personality develop and their poo doesn't smell vile.

TheGirlAtTheRockShow · 31/01/2015 05:40

How you can just watch them sleep, think it's been 5 minutes, the realise you've been staring for an hour!
Milk drunk, sleepy cuddles
When they first smile at you
When they're crying, see your face, stop crying and smile

RetroHippy · 31/01/2015 06:01

The weird noises and faces they make. (Lying next to a living kazoo here)
The fuzziness
The warmth
The way they burrow their heads right into you and suck on anything if they're hungry
When they start being awake for more than just a blink and you feel like they're really listening and looking at you

DS is six weeks old, he is perfect. He sleeps anywhere, if I don't shower it's because I can't be bothered, not because he won't let me. I have also been known to empty the dishwasher and cook dinner. They're not all colicky, refluxy screamers. But if you do get one, there will be periods of calm and gorgeous snuffliness.

Also, when he poos all over daddy at 3am it's actually pretty bloody hilarious!

nemo81 · 31/01/2015 06:49

Seeing them for the first time. Was just as amazing with baby no. 9 as it was with my first.

Watching them grow and change.

Cuddles.

QueenFuri · 31/01/2015 07:04

Everything, I loved having a newborn they are just so small and snuggly. My babies are almost 5 and 9 now I really miss the baby stage but no more for me!Sad
