What's the best bit about having a newborn?

I'm 21 weeks pregnant with my first DC and have heard nothing but horror stories and birth, having a newborn and how I won't ever have time to have a shower or tidy my housemate, EVER AGAIN!! Grin I absolutely accept this, I just want to hear something good about saving a newborn.

Tell me some lovely things about having a newborn, please?

The way they curl up.

BananaToast · 30/01/2015 21:17

This is the loveliest thread. I'm 28 weeks with my first and am now looking forward to what's ahead of me even more (which I didn't think was possible) Smile

Edenviolet · 30/01/2015 21:20

I absolutely love this thread

KnittedJimmyChoos · 30/01/2015 21:20

Well, actually apart from waking at odd hours, they do sleep mostly, if your baby is quite usual...

so in the day, you will get lots of time to rest. Enjoy the first three or so months, as they are tiny, dont move much...and nature gives you time to heal.

Once you get used to the changing bag and all that crap, its actually quite easy to go out and do stuff with a sleeping baby.

So do make most of this - you are more tied when they get moving and pulling and touching and running and screaming and whining etc...

A new born baby , the first, the glow over that baby, freshly made, the wonder is a magic, heavenly magic that nothing will touch again, its a miracle, mind blowing, and wonderous....Just be aware of hormones going up and down after birth there is the dip....but its amazing...amazing, enjoy.

I've skipped to the end to tell punygod that I've actually taken a screenshot of your first post, it says everything so perfectly.

I'll be back.

TheFirstOfHerName · 30/01/2015 21:25

Their heads smell nice.
They don't answer back.

MrsMinton · 30/01/2015 21:25

Tiny fingernails on tiny fingers that curl around your finger. Frog cuddles when they curl up on your chest and you can hold them with one hand. Fluffy hair and little eyelashes. It is the most amazing thing to meet the little kicker from your bump.

SASASI · 30/01/2015 21:25

It's the most amazing thing ever.

The happiness they bring to everyone. The smell. The satisfied milk drunk face is gorgeous.

Chubby feet & hands. Smiles, giggles. They all have their own quirks.

DS will only sleep on me during the day, usually after a BF. Yes ok so I could be sleeping, cooking or cleaning but I know this won't last long & I am going to soak up every cuddle.

slightlyconfused85 · 30/01/2015 21:25

The milk comas they have after a long feed. So cute. And they can't object to cuddles!

okeydonkey · 30/01/2015 21:29

The way you get the new waves of love for the newborn. You spend more time looking at them and really feeling the newness of that love whilst they are newborns

MintChocAddict · 30/01/2015 21:30

The softness of their skin, particularly the soles of their feet - like velvet.
The lying on your chest snuggling in and listening to the snuffles and kitten like squeaks.
The wee scrunched up legs.
Walking with the pram with baby all wrapped up against the cold. Loved it.
The portability factor, no set bedtimes, no routines. Free to go wherever, whenever. (With the first one anyway) Wink
The teeny tiny clothes and dressing them as chicks at Easter, elves at Christmas and pumpkins at Halloween. Or maybe that was just me!

Broody!!!
But also old. Sad

Enjoy every minute. It's wonderful. Flowers

Trooperslane · 30/01/2015 21:32

It's balls.

You adapt v quickly eg I stopped worrying about a shower in the am, looked forward to my 15 mins in the pm when dh came home.

When they start to cuddle in.

They're smell.

(Milky boke but amaze balls themselves)

I WANT ANOTHER ONE Shock

Trooperslane · 30/01/2015 21:34

Oh yes - they won't make a sound for ages then you'll think there's a nasally badger in the room.

(I WANT ANOTHER ONE)

GrouchyKiwi · 30/01/2015 21:34

My baby is only 6 months old and this thread is making me so broody.

I love all the baby stages, but newborn is so special. To compensate for the lack of sleep you get the incomparable smell of newborns, the way they snuggle on you on their little froggy pose, their perfect little hands and feet, the clothes! And the noises they make are just so gorgeous.

I also loved that they stay still for photos.

You will love it, even if it's hard. There are little moments of complete joy and the difficult bits just melt away at those times.

furryleopard · 30/01/2015 21:38

Mine is 4 months now and I'm still milking the "I couldn't do any housework today as DD was sleeping on me" I love that I've a reason to be my naturally lazy self. I'm aiming to milk it till I go back to work! Is like I've dropped into a different world that moves at a slower and relaxed pace.

I love her little fingers, sounds strange but they are mini fingers like proper human fingers but small!

My number 1 thing and she doesn't do it now is that she was breech and when she was asleep she used to go back in the same position she was in in me, head to one side and frog legged.

nottheOP · 30/01/2015 21:43

I'm not being negative BUT a really helpful forum person once told me that it's okay to not love the newborn stage and it can take time to feel the overwhelming love. For some it is survival.

If it's not your thing, it will pass. You will feel the love. Being a parent is amazing and a privilege. Your baby will teach you selflessness, patience and many wonderful attributes you never knew you had.

And they will probably sleep well by the time they start school.

PetiteBateau · 30/01/2015 21:46

The closeness, so in love. That's what it felt like, falling in love.

Enjoy it

Sleepyhoglet · 30/01/2015 21:49

The grateful noises they make when feeding.

okeydonkey · 30/01/2015 21:50

O yes Nottheop is right, we talk of the love but for some that doesn't come straight away so don't feel inadequate if it's not straight away

AnneofCheese · 30/01/2015 21:54

Agreed, nottheop. Didn't want to be a downer but none of this stuff was my experience. And that's ok! This forum is full of people who've experienced the rough and the smooth so don't be alarmed if you don't spend the newborn stage floating on a cloud of bliss, because you won't be alone. I wish someone would hand me an 18 month old second time round, but for others that would skip some lovely bits. Actually if I'm wishing for stuff I'd also wish DH had to be pregnant and give birth to the next one, he'd be so much better at it...

museumum · 30/01/2015 21:56

Showering and tidying are vastly overrated :)

Newborns are all consuming but before you know it they're toddler off to nursery.

Mulligrubs · 30/01/2015 22:01

The way they smell (heavenly)

They are so snuggly

They make little snuffles and noises in their sleep and it's just so cute

Their little fingers and toes are just tiny and fascinating

I found the newborn stage very very hard but I still remember bits like this that were blissful. Don't worry if you don't love the newborn stage. Just take it a day at a time. My son is 14 months now and it's gone so fasT. It's like I blinked and he went from a little 5lbs bundle to a big funny toddler Smile

FunnysInLaJardin · 30/01/2015 22:04

they are yours, all yours. And if they are your FB you can really enjoy them one to one in a way that is impossible with your second

bambinibop · 30/01/2015 22:04

There are so many good things! Way more good than bad!

Their tiny feet and hands
The little two breaths and sigh they do when they have had a long feed and are all happy and full and they do a little arms above head stretch too...it's amazing!
They smell gorgeous
You can just lie on the sofa with them for hours just cuddling and and sniffing their head. Everyone brings you stuff while you relax and feed the baby.
The way they stare into your eyes and you just know you are where they feel safe

oh its just wonderful enjoy it and ignore people being negative I found the same when I was pregnant and I know people are trying to prepare you but really I loved it, there are some harder bits of course but that's the same with most things in life

Enjoy! I'm a bit jealous I have a 1 year old and feel a bit broody now...

magpieginglebells · 30/01/2015 22:12

Oh and since my daughter was 3 months when she wakes in the morning and I lift my head to look at her she gives me the biggest 'I'v been waiting for you' smile. She does the same when my husband gets home from work. It's proof that she loves us as much as we love her.
