28 week growth scan, feeling a bit :-/

Hey ladies,

I'm 27+6 and had to have a growth scan, due to low PAPP-A levels.

I'm absolutely delighted that they said everything looks perfectly fine and my babies estimated weight is a shopping 2lb 7oz! So relieved to find out all is so far looking normal!

I've been determined not to find out the sex of the baby, I really really want a surprise at birth.

At the 20 week scan I accidentally saw between the legs and thought I couldn't see much going on... And was a little disappointed that my surprise may have been ruined! I then got over it within a few days reminding myself that it would be difficult to tell from that angle and it all looks the same anyway!

Today the sonographer was looking at the bladder and then moved into what looked to me like the image of cock and balls on the screen (sorry should have used more technical terms there!) but nothing else! I quickly looked away, and one of the ladies doing the scan said it's really hard to tell at that point anyway and that the baby had the cord between its legs!

Again I'm just feeling a bit like my surprise may have been ruined!

Please do not get me wrong, I am delighted regardless of what the sex of the baby is... I just don't want to know what it is until I see for myself after I've given birth!

Can someone please reassure me that I might not have seen what I think... It could have been bum cheeks and a femur or butt cheeks and cord? Has anyone had experience where they thought they saw something and it wasn't what they thought!

Honestly, I'd be soooo happy to have another boy, and I'd be equally as happy to have a little girl! I just don't want to open my presents before christmas :-)

I have never been able to see anything on the scan, despite the sonographer pointing out to me DS's (apparently) very obvious willy on 2 different scans.

Highly doubt that by glancing at the screen you would be able to see the sex like that.. don't worry! You will still be surprised!

If a sonographer can get it wrong at that stage, Joe Normal certainly can. Just put it out of your mind. You really have no idea. I have seen plenty of women panic they've seen something and it turns out to be wrong.

And finding out the sex at a scan is not like opening your presents before Christmas. That implies that women who do are somehow negatively affecting the birth or the birth is an anti-climax. Even if you did know- and you don't, promise -you actually know nothing but a basic biological fact. You don't know any of the important stuff like how s/he feels against you and the way s/he fits into your arms and already looks at you and knows your touch and voice.

I think when you have worries about the baby as you have, on the day of the scans you project that energy and anxiety onto something else. Like whether or not you saw a penis or cord. Don't give it false importance. Relax a bit.

Brilliant news that the baby is well. Best of luck for the last bit.

Thank you!

Showy- I probably worded that bit wrong! When I was pregnant with DS I was told he was a girl, and when I found out 8 weeks later he was a boy I felt really upset (stupid I know) because I'd bonded with this girl in me! It's just been from then really that I've just not wanted to know the sex throughout pregnancy!

As others above have said, you really don't know what you saw, so don't worry about ruining the surprise! If you have to have another scan, though, make sure you tell the person doing it that you don't want to know the sex - I had a scan yesterday for growth assessment and told the midwife, so when she was measuring the femurs she turned the screen away and told me to look away so I didn't see anything, so I'm sure they would be happy to do that if you asked :)
