Bleed getting heavier at 8 1/2 weeks - words of comfort please!

Hi all,
I have had a pretty text book pg up to now but started spotting on Tuesday and Wednesday and had a heavy bleed today. No pain though. Went to see doc yesterday and spoke with doc again today over phone. He has got me an early scan booked for Monday pm but I am so scared I won't make it until then.

Ironically I have my booking appointment with MW tomorrow and I saw this as such a milestone.

I really need words of comfort please, this is my first ever pg.

I can't say for sure what the outcome will be for you

but the little girl sitting in front of me and looking forward to her 2nd birthday is proof that what happened to you can come out right - it happened to me at around 7 weeks

I hope it works out the right way for you too

hello gill

do you have an epu (early pregnancy unit) near you? if so it is possible they have a walk-in clinic for scans? if you are in london you can go to st. thomas's hospital.

fwiw, i have a 50/50 record with bleeding in early pg.

Having bleeds during pregnancy is so scary, I really feel for you. I had about three bleeds in total, which all turned out okay, but they were very frightening and anxious times.

I can't reassure you about what is happening, because that would be irresponsible, but I can say that many people after early bleeds go onto normal pregnancies. Some can be caused by hormones, some by a low lying placenta.

I am based in Newcastle and it is the EPU that I am booked for on Monday. I have asked the doc to try to get me an earlier slot but he is struggling. He has told me though that if I start getting pains and cramps to head straight for A&E and they will jump the queue for me.

Yes, it is very scary, for some silly reason I never thought this would happen to me!

i had bleeding in my first pg...which continued to term and the delivery of a healthy baby...

i would urge you to follow the advice about getting to an epu for a scan....and then you will know what is going on...

sorry x post....bleeding in pregnancy is surprisingly common and does not end badly for all.....hang on until monday and go to a&e in the meantime if the situation changes....!

As with Cappucino I have a gorgeous 14-week old DS in front of me and I bled constantly from about 3 weeks upto about 8 weeks (I didn't know I was PG - just thought I was having an extra long period!) - then it started again at about 9-10 weeks which I was told was the placenta implanting itself.

I have also read several times that 95% of pregnancies with early bleeding go on to be ok so don't panic - get yourself to the doctors and get a scan to put your mind at rest.

I bled really heavily at what GP had siad was my 9th week of pregnancy but when I went for a scan they re-dated me at 6 weeks.

I continued to have small bleeds throughout the rest of pregnancy and was induced at 39 weeks. I was delighted to give birth to a beautiful healthy daughter who is my pride and joy but I had a retained placenta which had to be manually removed. They said that this may have had some ling to the bleeding.

I would probably go, even if just to reassure yourself. It would make so much difference if you can get seen sooner. Four days is a long time to wait if you are very worried.

thank you all. BossyKate, I have made a note of the number at the RVI and hope I do not need to use it.
My midwife appointment is tomorrow so I have decided to wait until I see her. There is no pain and this has been the only comfort up to now. There is also the fact that DH is in London and I don't want to go to be checked on my own.
I will be sensible though and if I wake tomorrow morning with a fresh bleed like I have had today I'll hot foot it to hospital.

I had 2 heavy bleeds when pregnant at 11 and again at 13 weeks with DS. I know how you are feeling as the first happened in Christmas week and the EPU was closed over the holiday so I had to wait 6 days for a scan. He's now a bouncing 4 year old!

They often don't know why they happen but I hope it works out for you.

Well the saga is continuing. I saw the midwife on Friday who was very realistic about my situation but also explained that I should retain some positivness too as I would go mad over the weekend otherwise.

She warned that the maternity assessment unit suggested by BossyKate only accepts women after their 14th week as they do not have the internal scan equipment necessary for early pregnancy. The EPU I am attending on Monday only has two members of staff and works Mon-Fri 9-5pm. She apologised profusely for the lack of facilities here in Newcastle for early pregnancy and recommended that unless I am in acute pain and suspect an eptopic to wait until my appointment on Monday.

By Friday night I had passed a very tiny clot and started to have the beginnings of what felt like my period but they have gone away now. Apart from the bits of brown blood every time I go to the loo there has not been much more bleeding and no more clots since, but I do feel that my period is about to arrive any minute.

Part if me is clutching to a little bit of hope, the other thinks its curtains on my first pregnancy. Think of me girls, this is going to be a long weekend! Last Satruday was my birthday and I was so happy about the whole thing and how I would celebrate my 34th with a baby in my arms. A week on and I don't know what to expect any more.

I'm really sorry you're going through this worrying time gillian.

try to rest (physically it doesn't really make any difference to early pg outcome, but you will possibly feel better/stronger if you look after yourself now) and distract yourself as much as you can.

Thinking about you and hoping it turns out okay.

Take care of yourself, try to do nice things, get a nice DVD, cups of hot chocolate, maybe a magazine. Anything which makes the weekend easier.

Thanks for your words, I am trying to keep my head up and calm but I must admit I lost it a bit this morning.

We have been for a couple of short walks and I have had lots of rest and sleep since I am still very tired and feeling sicky. That is such a cruel irony - if this is not going to go ahead I wish I didn't have pregnancy symptoms!

Gill, there's probably nothing other than the scan which will truly help, but FWIW....I had exactly the same scenario as you with both my prgnancies.

Spotting, then sudden gush of bright red blood (maybe a couple of tablespoonsfull, hard to judge), then more spotting over a period of several days (pink and brown). The first time, they could see some blood on the u/s and it could either have been a 'vanishing twin' - a second sac that didnt' make it - or a small blood clot, that subsquequently healed.
The second time, we never knew - nothing to see on the u/s other than a healthy embryo. I had bleeds like yours about three times, both pregnancies.

No pain is very good - if you were cramping and bleeding it would be more worrying.

I would take it easy, make sure you stay hydrated (water) and hang in there for Monday - I'll be looking out for your update! Hugs and best of luck, xxx

There is probably nothing wrong, but are you rh negative? I am and my doctor told me that if I ever had a bleed I would have to go get a rhogam shot. If you are I would bring it up to the doctor just in case.

Only a little while to go before you go to the scan.

I had red blood bleeds with both pgs but they didn't know what caused it and both pgs were fine. So if things haven't deteriorated there is every chance that it will be okay.

Dear all,
just got back from being checked. They found a sac and a foetus but it measured 4.5mm (i.e. 6 wks) and I am supposed to be 9 wks today; and there was no heartbeat.

This could be as a result of two things-
a) my dates are wrong
b) the foetus stopped growing at 6 weeks and the bleeding is my body telling me that it is getting ready to miscarry.

They have made another appointment for next Monday morning to check me out and advice on a course of action then.

I know I should remain positive but I am pretty sure of my dates. The only thing is that I am on a 25 day cycle rather than a 28 day which could knock a few days out here and there but not 3 weeks.

The bleeding has not stopped and it feels like a proper period now (but less cramping than normal). We have resigned ourselves to the fact that it was not meant to be this time round.

Thanks for all your words of support though, it has meant a lot to me.

I went through exactly the same in june, sadly it wasnt a good outcome but I'm now 13 weeks pregnant again.

Don't know about positive and calm, believe me you wouldn't have said that yesterday morning.

I don't want to seem cruel and matter of fact but I went into this pregnancy with a lot of caution. It is my first and very much wanted but amoungst my many friends who have had many babies there is one who has miscarried 4 times in 3 years. I knew the risks and just kept praying I could get to the following week and still be pregnant. I guess my baby had other ideas!
