i woke up after afternoon nap with sharp piercing shoulder pain in my left shoulder. imagine carpal tunnel syndrome pain just for the shoulder. it got worse by the night and i took some paracetamol, put heat pads on it, stil the pain is excruciating. i dont even know what i can take whilst pregnant, im at 34 weeks .. anyone else went trough this before?

Hi Way2Tired,

Left shoulder tip pain can be a symptom of quite a few things but most commonly gallstones or inflammation of your gallbladder. Do you have contact details for your midwife or maternity team? Would be worth giving them a call to get it checked out.

Unfortunately paracetamol probably won't work for the pain. Where are you? If the pain is not settling then you would also be entitled to give out of hours a call particularly since you are 34 weeks pregnant!

paracetamol didnt work either... went trough a hellish night of pain , luckily today i can use my arm some.. i'm seeing the midwife tomorrow so we'll see what she says..

Call your delivery suite and speak to a midwife. They can check you over there. do not wait until the morning, do it now

MarjorieMelon · 18/01/2015 22:30

Definitely call the maternity unit. Any pain needs investigating. Don't wait until tomorrow - go tonight.

I hope all is well.

I was about to say that shoulder tip pain can be a red flag in late pregnancy too - please get checked out.

I had severe trapped wind pain in my shoulder during pregnancy. Was sent for scans etc to check it was nothing worse, nope just trapped wind Blush

so i saw the midwife today.. ( yesterday was relatively mild pain in the shoulder slowly dissappearing ). i told her about the shoulder thing and she said oh there's nothing we can do about that, it will pass, it's normal in pregnancy . all very fast brushed away. she listened to my lil bump who had a normal heart rate and moves same as always .

i am somehow not very impressed with the way she brushed it off..but she did confirm our son is ok so ..

If your BP and urine check was ok it may be she's not worried about pre eclampsia and it is just a case of trapped wind or baby on a nerve ... If you still are worried then give the Day Unit a call and ask advice ... If you get a headache, fuzzy head or swelling though please go straight in without delay ... good to hear the signs are positive and little one is happy in there!

thank you very much to each of you for your advice and care. very much appreciated Flowers
