12 week scan and screening

Hello, This is my first pregnancy and I will be having my 12 week scan on 20th Jan. I booked this myself late last week as I hadn't received a letter and they had sent the request to the wrong hospital. When I met with the midwife both me and my partner confirmed that we wanted the Nuchal and Downs screening blood tests. When I got the date for the appointment over the phone they didn't mention anything about the blood tests. My query is do they do this at the same time as the scan as my partner is worried it won't get sorted and as I have not been through this before I have no idea what the process is... I wasn't sure if I just pass them my notes and they do everything based on that information? Any advice much appreciated. Thank you Smile

Ours were done straight after the scan in my first pregnancy. In this pregnancy they couldn't get the nuchal measurement as the baby was in the wrong position so they didn't do the blood tests and I will have the quad test instead at 16 weeks.

Yes, they do it at the same time, or at least they did with me. I went in for the scan then had to wait around for paperwork, then go to see the midwife. She took bloods, BP, handed me some bis of paper and gave me the results of previous blood tests (HIV, blood type etc.).

You should get your NT results in 1-3 weeks by letter if low risk. If high risk, they ring you. And do take your notes with you, apparently they get shirty if you don't :)

They do the scan then will send you down to the bloods clinic after to get your bloods done. The nuchal measurement will be on your scan report. You'll receive a letter about a week later saying if your at lower or higher risk

They do it at the same time although you do need the blood form from your midwife xx

KatoPotato · 11/01/2015 11:19

Yes at our 12week scan they took the NT measurement then sent me along to have bloods done straight after. I'm sure it's assumed you will unless you've opted out of the screening

Thank you, when you mention a form the only thing I have is the bag with the card attached that is called 'Maternal Serum' with my details on that I believe the blood sample gets sent off in. Is that what I need? I haven't had any bloods taken so far, it's just difficult when you don't know what to expect.

You will only have the bloods done if they can get the NT measurement which sometimes they can't. Don't worry if they have appropriately measured the NT you will have a blood test done straight afterwards.

Bustherb · 11/01/2015 15:18

Yeah my midwife gave me a blood form which she completed with details of what blood is taken for. They may do this at the hospital but you could ring the midwife and check, wouldn't want u to get there and they say they can't cus they don't have the form xxx

LovelyWeatherForDucks · 11/01/2015 15:31

Where I am, bloods are done at a separate appointment beforehand (by the midwife) then sent off to the hospital, so you get your results then and there when you have the scan. I would check!

applecore0317 · 11/01/2015 15:33

they gave me a blood form after the scan as my midwife hadn't given me one, I had the scan then went up to see the midwife to get my blood test

dancinglorna1984 · 11/01/2015 15:38

Thank you. I may text her in the morning to check then. I am not massively confident so far so if I find out she hasn't given me the paperwork needed I may flip my hormonal lid...

Hey Op, I am having my 12wk scan on same day! Smile I already had the bloods done last week but I'm in Australia, probably totally different system.

dancinglorna1984 · 12/01/2015 18:11

Congratulations upthewolves! I think my midwife is now on holiday for a couple of weeks so I don't really know what to do as I don't want to go for my scan and then be told they can't do the bloods if I don't have the correct paperwork...Feeling stressed.. Aaargh Confused

Bloods should be done straight after scan, as long as baby in right position and they can get measurements. Xx

pinkie1982 · 12/01/2015 21:07

I had mine last week. Bloods first the. Scan. That was Wednesday.
The results came through the post today
