Hi, yes I had it. Just be prepared for bleeds and ultimately having a c-section. Ignorance was bliss for me until I got admitted at 30 weeks (because of a bleed) and then not allowed out until 10 weeks later. At one stage I wasn't even allowed off the ward to go to the hospital coffee shop in case I had a bleed. A few midwives bandied about that I had around 10 minutes to get into theatre if I had a big bleed otherwise it was curtains for baby and me. I'm really not saying that to panic you, but it was only then that I realised exactly what could happen (I was grade 4, full cover as well, so the worst). Needless to say it didn't, and you may only get smaller bleeds in the later weeks but all I would say is listen to the medical advice you're given and start to get your head around the fact that you might be admitted for the final weeks of pregnancy. And take it easy - don't be going daft things like walking the dog or lifting boxes.
I got through it by telling myself that it could be worse and it can, but best of luck.

Justfivemoreminutesplease · 09/01/2015 22:55

They can move (& do) but it depends what grade yours is - as I said, mine was a 4 so there was no chance in hell it was moving.
Not being scanned until 32 weeks sounds as if it's only a small covering as if it were more, then you would have more regular scans.
I would speak to your midwife - because of pp I was under consultant care and you don't say that you are, so again, you might only be a lower grade and hence they are more relaxed about you and your pp.

dy14 · 09/01/2015 22:58

omg it sounds horrific. the sonographer didnt even explain it to me she asked if I had section before and I said no and just said ive made u a appt for coming bk at 32w.. will I make that? can it move back to normal placenta? im so scared now as ive had a blood transfusion and retained placenta and bad tear before I just wantes this to be a elec section for my last baby Sad Sad Sad

Oh I wonder then as she was rubbish and didn't say much throughout my anomaly scan at all. Should I ask my midwife if I can get another scan incase? im worried. not sure I wanna wait 10-12 w with this on my mind. that will explain the bleeding I got maybe beginning of pregnancy also ! x

As PP said, it depends how serious yours is. Did they tell you? Mine was a Grade 4 and all well till some spotting at 29 weeks and a bleed at 31. DD born at 26 weeks by ELCS.

try not to panic, but if you can find out the seriousness then you can amend your activity accordingly. BTW I worked to 31 weeks no problem albeit it wasn't manual work.

Take care and ask any Q's you want Smile

Justfivemoreminutesplease · 09/01/2015 23:04

Def speak to the midwife - personally I would call them on Monday esp given your history. I know it means absolutely nothing but "you'll be fine" - just speak to the midwives and get the reassurance that you need

SummerSazz · 09/01/2015 23:06

Yes, I would go back and ask your midwife to give you a bit more info or look on your notes (A midwife on here could probably translate). They should already have the info so you shouldn't need another scan

dy14 · 09/01/2015 23:11

No she was such a unprofessional midwide scanning me. my partner was so hapoy and excited he wasnt able to go to our 12w scan due to work so he was so happy and emotional and was asking him why are u crying? and I delt like she was really judgemental!Sad and all she said was ill have u back to be scanned as your placenta is lying low/placenta previa and asked if I had a section before and I said no and she went oh ok..

I had to ask her what does that mean? will it affect anything getting to baby? and she said it wont affect baby.

I just am so worried cause I do alot of lifting, bending down and up at work, walking up and down stairs, back and forth. (I work in retail a big department store)

And im exhausted. I am worried incase having this and over doing it?! hopefully its not grade 4. What a shame on yous girls who have had that sounds terrible.

Thanks so much for info! I see my midwife on Tuesday should I wait or call Monday also?

Thanks very much appreciated so glad I asked! Would have no idea.

Justfivemoreminutesplease · 09/01/2015 23:15

If you're going to worry then call on Monday - it might turn out to then be a conversation about what you want to discuss on Tues but even if it is, at least the midwife will know.
And Angry AngryAngry on your behalf to that sonographer

SummerSazz · 09/01/2015 23:28

tbh, when I was told it was pretty blasé as 90% move out of the way and all ok, so only 10% are problematic. I guess it was just bad luck I was one of the 10% but all fine really. I had more monitoring and ended up off work from 31 weeks but was allowed home.

At my 20 week scan I was told it was low lying and told to get to hospital if I had any bleeding but there was no real impact in the way I was told. Mine was diagnosed at 29 weeks when I had some discharge.

Please try not to worry now as any bleeding does tend to come later when the uterus stretches. I'm sure you'll be fine to wait for tues for clarification then, but if you are really worried do call before then.

HarrietSchulenberg · 10/01/2015 00:33

I had a partial placenta previa with DS2, detected by a scan at 24 weeks as I'd had some abnormal bleeding.

Had one night in hospital then a scan at 32 weeks, by which time it had moved pretty much out of the way. Also tested positive for Strep B.

Had a normal, albeit very fast, delivery and a healthy DS2, though had to stay in hosp for 3 days due to Strep B monitoring.

So they can move.

RhiannonElward · 10/01/2015 02:03

I had a grade 4, admitted to hospital at 36 weeks, not so much as a spot of blood. While I was lucky and others don't fare as well, don't panic about it, you'll have to have a long stay in hospital if it's a grade 4 but you'll be well looked after. Were you warned about pelvic rest? No sex unfortunately, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

As has been said before, most move, but mine didn't budge an inch and I have a calm and lovely C-section at 39 weeks. I lost a lot of blood during the c-section (common with previa) so was very anaemic afterwards but they stockpiled my blood while I was in hospital in case I needed it, I didn't as it turns out.

I advise you (and I'm no professional at all) to take it as easy as you can, bleeds can be very serious and not to be taken lightly. Get advice about working, I worked until I was admitted to hospital, but I did no significant lifting from the day I found out the dangers. You at least need to discuss your situation with your employer and see what they can arrange for you. You have a lot of rights as a pregnant lady, by all means make the most of them. Placenta previa is too serious to take risks with because someone needs a box moved, isn't it?

Good luck anyway, hopefully you just have a partial previa and that means you may still be able to have a vaginal birth.

SummerSazz · 10/01/2015 08:07

I agree with Rhiannon that it should be taken seriously but don't panic yourself reading stories! Fwiw whist many grade 4 praevias may result in a long hospital stay, my consultant let me home between my 2 bleeds at 31 and 36 weeks so they really will treat you as an individual and do the best they can.

ooerrmissus · 10/01/2015 08:14

I had it with DS2, only a partial one though. It was fine and moved out of the way. I had an extra scan at 32 weeks to check it had shifted. I went on to have a home birth.
As pp have said, call on Monday and find out what's going on. But my gut feeling would be it won't be a grade 4 or the sonographer would have given you more detail.

blacktreaclecat · 10/01/2015 08:18

I had it, I started having bleeds at 24 weeks and was in and out if hospital until 35. I stayed in then until he arrived by EMCS at 36+3. I was off work and resting from 26.
AFAIK they are more likely to move if anterior- mine was posterior.
They seem to be more common in ivf pregnancies interestingly, DS was ivf.
Take it easy! I think you need to see your consultant for advice, they may sign you off work.

dy14 · 10/01/2015 14:17

I am having a elective section anyway so the fact I cant have natural birth isn't so bad. I am just scared whatever happens before thenSad xxx

Pandora37 · 10/01/2015 15:39

Try not to panic. It sounds like from what she said that you have a low lying placenta, if it was a Grade 4 I'm sure she would have told you. There's nothing you can do to shift it, it's just one of those things but the majority do move up anyway, it's quite unusual for them not to and it's not unusual at all to have a low lying placenta at 20 weeks. There should be a scan report in your notes, can you see what she's written?

I think ringing on Monday would be difficult just because without having your notes in front of her the midwife's not going to be able to tell you anything. She could always ring the scanning department on your behalf and try and find out but I honestly think if it was really serious they would have booked you a consultant appointment as well which I'm assuming she didn't. I wouldn't link the bleeding in early pregnancy to it necessarily as it is very common at that stage and can be caused by all sorts of things. I hope your midwife is able to reassure you though. :)

dy14 · 10/01/2015 15:44

Thanks so much for reassurance.

It just says in my notes posterior placenta laying low rescan arranged??

I know im starting to not as worry now as im sure if it was quite bad she would have told me? like you said. I am going to ask my midwife for another anomaly scan anyway as she totally ruined my partner and I's ment to be exciting time. she was awful. Sad

Thanks

I had my 20 week scan last week and was told my placenta looked low. I've to go back for another scan at 34 weeks.

My sonographer didn't brush it off but she did say in the vast majority of cases the placenta will move up as baby grows so it's not always something to worry about.

She didn't give me any other warnings though, so I'd imagine mine can't have been too serious. I might check with my midwife when I see her in a couple of weeks though.

BrieAndChilli · 10/01/2015 16:32

It depends on where it is. With dd the placenta was next to the cervix but not over the opening. If it hadn't moved I would have had to have a csection but luckily it moved in time.

Giantbabymama · 10/01/2015 16:49

I know someone who had PP. She was booked for ELCS at around 38 weeks but she had some bleeding at around 33 + 4 and her DS was born a couple of days later. I think was EMCS in the strictest sense but they kept her in for a day beforehand to give her steroid injections to mature the baby's lungs before operating. He was in an incunabator for a little while but did well and was discharged and is now thriving.

I hope this story doesn't scare you, but wanted to share as although was worrying for her before baby was born, things settled quite quickly. I think premature birth is more common with PP but it sounds like they've caught it early with you and will monitor you to prevent if at all possible.
