Try not to worry, I had a this and was told at my 20 week scan it was unlikely to move-booked me in for a scan at 28 weeks and it had moved out of the way! Most of them do. Good luck x

theeternalstudent · 10/01/2015 18:03

I was diagnosed with placenta previa after a bleed at around 20 weeks. I'm not sure what grade it was. I was just advised to take it easy and that in most cases it sorts itself out before the baby arrives, and it did. Baby was born at 41 weeks with no problems.

I think you are more likely to have placenta previa if you are an older mum and if you are not very tall.

Good luck, I'm sure you will be fine but perhaps best to look into a bit further.

dy14 · 10/01/2015 21:51

Maybe if my sonographer was nicer she may have told me its nothing to worry about just now but she juet said ill c you back in 10w for another scan. So its probably not that bad (hoping not) but im feel because I haven't been reassured I am anxious for any bleeding? or about how will I be at work? or should I rest? Im confused. Do I just continue as normal and dont worry untill my next scan? also is it ok to have slight uncomfortable pain right down at ur pelvis? I out it down to stretching of uterus (before this PP came to me) Thanks so muchSmile Smile Smile Smile

I would just carry on as normal, I had no bleeding either. I'm sure she would have spoken to you about it in more depth if she was worried. I would carry on as you are, making sure you don't lift anything too heavy and obviously contact the hospital if you have any bleeding, I'm sure I was told over 90% of placentas move up x

I have had a low lying placenta twice.

With dd2 it moved up out of the way.

With ds (dc3) I had grade 4 placenta praevia with percreta into my bladder (more common if previous cs, my first two were emcs). After my 20 week scan showed praevia I saw the registrar who told me no sexual intercourse until after baby was born and no heavy lifting. At 26 weeks I had a big bleed, was completely unprepared, steroids given to mature baby's lungs just in case and I was kept in. After two weeks I went home for 1 day, bled again back in. After the third bleed I was kept in until I had my son. Elcs was booked for 37 weeks, but he came at 34 weeks because I kept contracting and bleeding. He was fine, stayed with me, breastfed no SCBU stay at all. I lost my total blood volume at delivery, 14+ bags of blood transfused and had an emergency hysterectomy to save my life.

Mine was the worst case scenario, but I am OK and you will be too

Be prepared. Have a hospital bag ready. Take your notes every where. Have emergency child care cover on hand for your other children. Have a plan of what you with do if you have to stay in long term. Make sure your hospital has good services for high risk pregnancies and a NICU for babies under 28 weeks (tertiary care unit) so that if baby does make an early appearance you will be in the same hospital as baby. If it doesn't ask for a transfer to one that does if possible. If you have a bleed, 999 ambulance for heavy bleeding. Tell them you have placenta praevia.

jmojo · 11/01/2015 08:28

Generally "low lying" means close to but not covering the cervix. If it is actually covering the cervix they will usually grade it as a 3 or 4. So i would think that yours is one that may very well be one they would expect to potentially move away from the cervix as the lower half of your uterus expands.

See your midwife next week and get advice, but generally they will say come in if you bleed immediately, no strenuous lifting! Sometimes no sex. If you actually bleed they will be keeping a closer eye on you.

The good news is that a posterior placenta is better for a c section as it is then not covering the lower front half of your uterus when they do the C section which can mean a better regulated blood loss!!

anotherstitchintime - Wow thats so scary! glad you and DC is ok! Thanks for the heads up, never really realised how dangerous it wasShock .

jmojo - Thanks! I hope so ive had retained placenta with dc1 and emergency blood transfusion and spinal to operate to get placenta removed and had on going problems for weeks after as still some LEFT in causing me horrid problems and with dc2 I had little bit more csre because of this but had a bad tear internal and external and episiotomy and both ny DS's were 9lb and 9lb 9. So I have reasons for my opted ELCS. I just dont want to worry for nothing or I want to no should I take time off work etc. I am just scared and everytime I go to loo im checking for bleed Shock Thanks everyone for information. Smile

Is it just me or is this PP such a under publicised complication in pregnancy?

OP posts:
Ohmygoshohmygosh · 11/01/2015 12:08

I am another who had PP, DC was born at 26 weeks but I had severe bleeding from 18 weeks.
It is quite under publicised you are right, i had never heard of it before nor had many of my friends who had children. I think the reason being is that it is fairly common but majority of woman who do have it, thankfully, get though to term with no complications. This could well be you.

It is a much smaller percentage who have the more serious complications. So that is on your side.

OP, I hope you are in this majority, but my advise is to rest as much as you can, and try not to exert yourself too much? how reasonable are your employers? Time off should not be a problem as it is pregnancy related. Could they place you in a less demanding role?

I've had a low lying placenta twice. Both moved out of the way. I had a rescan at 36 weeks for my first pregnancy and at 34 weeks for my second. No one seemed too worried for either of them. I think there may be a difference between saying low lying and PP at 20 weeks and how much they worry depends on which it is.

I got told I had placenta praevia at 20 weeks and my placenta is posterior. Wasn't given much more information so glad you have posted this been good reading everyone's experiences. I am 25+3 and I have been feeling the need to be really organised, incase baby comes too earlyHmm but trying not to stress, I think it's the not know what your going to be doing that is scary.

I was told I would need a 32 week scan, but have also booked at 4d private scan which says they can also tell u the position of the placenta, hoping this gives me a wee bit more piece of mind.

Good luck to u, hopefully it sorts itself out! Xxx

Needmorechocolate · 11/01/2015 20:10

I had complete covering PP. It was diagnosed at 20wk scan and like you they were really uninformative etc and just told me I had to go back at 32wks for another scan. I ended up phoning the midwife about it but her view was that I shouldn't worry. I posted on here for info instead!

My placenta never moved but I never had any bleeds. Later in the pregnancy my condultant did say I shouldn't be on my own just in case I did have a significant bleed but thankfully that never happened. I had an elective section at 38wks and all was absolutely fine.

AuditAngel · 11/01/2015 22:23

I have had grade 4 PP twice. I knew 3 other people who had PP who had completely normal pregnancy followed by a CS at 38 weeks (standard then, now 39 weeks is standard). I assumed I would be the same.

With DS I had manual removal of placenta, in my first PP pregnancy, I saw a consultant who was doing a study into whether a previous manual removal caused a higher incidence of PP. In this PPpregnancy I was given no advice other than to call the delivery suite if I got any bleeding.

At 33.5 weeks I had a big bleed and drove myself in (we had been out for dinner, I had 1 glass of wine, DH had the rest!). I went in with my notes and a book as my bag wasn't ready. I also foolishly thought I wouldn't be kept in. I was in for 2 days then sent home. Within 24 hours I was back in as the bleeding started again. I was kept in until a planned section at 37.5 weeks. DD1 weighed in at a whopping 8lb 11oz at 37.5 weeks, I was glad I had a section, and that she didn't get to term!

We asked if there was any reason that I would get PP again, but we're reassured it wouldn't happen.

At my 13 week scan with DC3, we asked where the placenta was. I knew it isn't checked until 20 weeks, but after my last experience, I was, understandably worried. The sonographer said she couldn't see the placenta, so either top or bottom. DH and I looked at each other, said, it'll be at the bottom. PP again. We were right.

At my 20 week scan they confirmed PP, but this experience was very different. I wax held back, while they tried to find a consultant available to see me. No-one was available, so we were booked into clinic a couple of days later, sent away with a leaflet, and told "no flying, no sex, no lifting the DC, no pushing a shopping trolley".

I was admitted with bleeds at 24 weeks, 26, three times in a week at 31 weeks, then finally at 33weeks, I was kept in. Eventually I had an EMCS at 36+1, DD2 was small, but fine, home 2 days later.

If you have any questions, please ask.

cunexttuesonline · 11/01/2015 23:39

I have it, diagnosed at 27 weeks after a small bleed. I had another scan with a consultant and it is partially covering the cervix so I am to have another scan at 35 weeks and go back in with any more bleeding.

dy14 · 12/01/2015 23:42

I wish I knew more about it. It sounds as if it can be very dangerous and im aorry to hear those who had a tough time with it Sad .

Thanks for all the stories its good to knowSmile

Most people who have PP have no symptoms.

I still count myself as lucky, because in the words of my lovely consultant "you have 3 beautiful children and you are alive to enjoy them". She was trying to convince me that anymore children would be a REALLY BAD idea!

I had 5 scans (due to something else), dozy feckers didn't notice the PP, also acreta, didn't notice that either.
Planned section. 11 bags of blood, emergency hysterectomy.
