hi. haven't been on for a while, but am stuck again, so thought i would turn to the fountain of wisdom!!!
i recently had a missed mc that required "medical management" ie pessaries which didn't work and then a d&c. it has been 6 weeks to the day and yesterday i got a bfp. i am pleased as we were (obviously) trying, but a) worried about the 2 events being so close, and b) have no idea when i should be counting from. is it from the date of the d&c or do i need a dating scan to tell? if so, how early can you have them and how do you get them.
thanks in advance.

Congratulations

You will need a scan - your ovulation could really have been any time from 2 weeks after the d&c, although it is likely to have been somewhat later. You could try, in view of your history of mc, to get a scan at your EPU, but in your situation I would wait a couple of weeks in case you go, see no heartbeat because it's too early, and get worried.

There is no reason to think it will go wrong this time because of it being so soon after the mc. I conceived immediately after a mc recently - sadly I mc again, but am 100% certain it was NOT because of the speed of the conception. There are several MNers who conceived straight after mc and had happy and healthy pregnancies.

Joseyjo · 14/10/2006 22:13

thanks for that!
my mum didn't approve of me pregnant the first time as it was "too soon" after ds (Even though he is 13 months old now!!) so i am dreading telling her that i have fallen so quickly again.
how early can you see a heart beat then? is it 6 weeks or 8?
are you saying then that i am probably not even 4 weeks yet?
sorry for bombarding you with questions!!

CONGRATULATIONS.....
can you date from the date of your d&c

juuule · 14/10/2006 22:18

Congratulations.
I have conceived straight after missed m/c and went to term so I wouldn't worry about the 2 events being so close. I counted from the d&c but only as a guide. Went to the GP and was referred for an early scan which did tie the dates up with what I thought.

foundintranslation · 14/10/2006 22:20

A vaginal scan can (often, not always) see a heartbeat at 6 weeks, a 'normal' scan at 8 weeks.

You are probably somewhere between 4 and 5 weeks, but the only way to tell for sure is to have the scan.

Joseyjo · 14/10/2006 22:21

thanks - juule how early was the early scan then?
i was promised one at 8 weeks last time (long story as to why) but they couldn't fit me in until 10, so you can imagein why i wasn't very impressed to be told that the bean had died 3 weeks ago. i know it wouldn't have changed the outcome, but it was very frustrating.

so do we think go straight to gp and get referred now or ring epu in a couple of weeks time and ask for a scan?

OP posts:
juuule · 14/10/2006 22:22

Heartbeat can be seen somewhere between 6 and 8 weeks so don't get too alarmed if it's not seen at 6weeks. You might be 6wks or less pg now. The first 2 weeks before ov gets counted in.

Joseyjo · 14/10/2006 22:24

ok, so how far gone did you think you were before hte scan and were you counting from the date of the mc or from ovulation/conception?

OP posts:
juuule · 14/10/2006 22:24

I would go to the gp first and insist on a referral to epu. Given your history he should refer you quickly. If no joy there phone epu.

MumRum · 14/10/2006 22:25

I too conceived straight after a m/c and I dated from my d&c...... I didn't have a dating scan but that was 11 years ago now....
[DD's 10 now]

Joseyjo · 14/10/2006 22:25

sorry - just re-read your other post. so you did count from the mc. that would make me 6 weeks tomorrow.

OP posts:
juuule · 14/10/2006 22:26

I counted from the d&c and the scan more or less agreed. I can't remember exactly but it was close enough to keep me happy.

Joseyjo · 14/10/2006 22:27

wicked. ok will do.
to be honest every time i go to the loo i expect to see my period starting. it is really odd. i have had some symptoms this time that i have had b4 (this being my 4th pg now) but i had more with the one i lost. why does this whole thing mess with your head SOOOO much.
oh well. can't whine. have an irrepressible 13 month old boy to keep me busy!!

thanks all. off to bed now, but will let you know what happens.

hello. just thought you might be interested in an update.
i have been to the epu and had a blood test. that showed that it is definitely a new pregnancy (not a hang over of hormone from the last one) and that i am just over 5 weeks. i have to go back today for a second test to check that the levels are going up not down. quite impressively it only takes about 2 hours to get the results!! not like having a test at the gps surgery where it takes 10 days.
if all is well with the bloods then they will scan me in about 2 weeks (when i should be 7 weeks gone) for reassurance. they don't want to do it earlier than that as there probably wouldn't be a heartbeat to look for.
i did get the snotty question - "weren't you using contraception?" - to which the answer is pretty obviously no! but other than that they were really nice. no concerns about the two pgs being so close either. wait and see time now!

thanks for all your help and i will come back with an update later.
xx

Sorry-saved before I typed message! Glad to hear your news. I am in similar position-just done two tests and both positive but not sure if it is down to residual hormones

edie123 · 28/10/2006 15:37

bump

MadMommie · 01/11/2006 09:43

Edie, my midwife advised that HCG levels drop pretty quickly after a miscarriage or ERPC, but they can remain in the blood for upto, I think, about 32 days. If you're getting a strong positive result on a test and it's more than 6 weeks after a mc or op, it is likely that you are pregnant.

This happened to me six weeks after an ERPC. I left it for another 10 days after testing positive , before having an early scan that confirmed the pregnancy.

Fingers crossed for you.

MM

edie123 · 01/11/2006 09:58

I did another last sat and it was BFN. Had a blood test and waiting for the results...

Joseyjo · 01/11/2006 12:47

edie, sorry it has taken me so long to respond, i have been a tad busy.
i had the second blood test and the hormone level had doubled so it is definietly a new pg. they said the same to me, that it is really unlikely that you would get a positive result six weeks after a mc especially as i had a d&c. apparently it is more likely if it was all natural.
let us know how you get on with your blood tests. i have a reassurance scan next tuesday and am really nervous. they are estimating that i will be 8 weeks by then
