Bleeding in early pregnancy - does it often end well?

Hi All,

This is my first time on Mumsnet - I hope you are all well!

I'm looking for other mumsnetter's experiences of bleeding in early pregnancy.

As a bit of background, my first pregnancy ended at the end of October at 11.5 weeks in a fairly traumatic incomplete miscarriage (I ended up in a lot of pain, being rushed to a&e and having an emergency ERPC at 3am to stop the bleeding, followed by a couple of nights in hospital and a month off work).

Anyway, I recovered fairly quickly, had a normal period at the end of November, and by the beginning of December my iron levels were back up to normal so my husband and I started trying again.

I took a pregnancy test on the 29th December on day 30 of my cycle - my period was due around then, or a day or so later - and I got a strong positive. I say 'strong' because the + was much darker than the test I took last time I was pregnant, but it might be irrelevant.

Anyway, the very next day I started to get a bit of brown discharge. My heart sank as this is how my last miscarriage started. I really wished I hadn't taken the test so early as if I hadn't known I had conceived I would just have thought this was my period. The brown discharge turned pinky, and then even a little more red (just enough to create a 'line' in one pantyliner over the course of the day). I was fully expecting it to turn into a normal period, and for the pain to start as it did with my previous miscarriage. But instead the discharge became pink again and then stopped. I was spotting for about 24-36 hours in total between the 30th-31st.

I took a digital pregnancy test on the evening of the 31st. I know that it would still show pregnant at that stage even if I was losing the pregnancy, but I knew that it was 2 weeks since I ovulated so I wanted to see if it said 1-2 weeks pregnant, which would suggest the hcg levels weren't so high, or 2-3 weeks pregnant. It came out positive and 2-3 weeks pregnant.

I've not had any further spotting over the past 2 days and I do 'feel' pregnant - my boobs hurt and I have nausea like I had last time. I'm hoping it might just have been a bit of 'breakthough bleeding'. However I don't want to get my hopes up. I know all I can really do is wait patiently and go to the doctors when they re-open next week to get my bloods checked. It is very early days but I was really hoping not to have another miscarriage (as does everyone I'm sure).

But in the meantime I just wondered what other people's experiences have been of bleeding early in pregnancy... does it often end well?

Thanks so much in advance for your replies!

Thanks for replying, Aw so sorry to hear your news lovely, I've got my fingers crossed for good news but I'm doubt it so badly after bleeding the way I have today I have my emergency scan tomorrow so will hopefully have some more clarification.

I've wanted this baby so badly for the past 4 years. Xx

Hi chel I have my fingers crossed for you, I'm currently here feeling quite upset at exactly 5 weeks pregnant having experienced bleeding yesterday and today- not as heavy as period but definitely there. GP says not much to be done right now, rest as much as possible, test again in a week, go to her for referall if still positive or I have any other worrying symptoms

She did put me at ease a bit by putting a community midwife on who said 50% of women who experience bleeding in early pregnancy go on to have healthy babies - so there is a chance. At 6 weeks they will be more able to see what's going on. Fingers crossed for sticky babies for both of us

Ooo that's abit reassuring, have my scan today at 2.30, don't know how much will be seen as I think I'm only 4-5 weeks, always have irregular periods so not quite sure when my last one was. Will let youse know my outcome later on. Stay rested x x

@chel194
I have everything crossed for you! Please let us know how you get on

I bled at 17 weeks in my first pregnancy and it was just a burst blood vessel so it can happen and be nothing to worry about!
Xxx

Hey guys, had my scan today. Obviously I thought I was 4 weeks but No sac/pregnancy found. So had 3 options, I'm too early to pick anything up on a scan as of yet, or that I have already passed the pregnancy/had miscarriage, or the pregnancy is in a different place( ectopic) so got to have bloods done today to check HCG levels then be repeated on Friday to see if had rise or fall in HCG to see what's happening.

A long anticipated wait now till Friday, has this happened to anyone before. Xx

Hey guys just an update, had my bloods done yesterday to check HCG levels, hospital rang this morning with results & they indicated a pregnancy, I have to go back tomorrow to have a repeat done to check if they rise or fall again. But having a little hope now, obviously If they rise again meaning I am either far to early to show on a scan or I'm having an ectopic pregnancy( but not experiencing any of them symptoms yet).

Got all my fingers and toes crossed for better news after these other bloods tomorrow.

Has anyone experienced this before x

Hey lovelies, unfortunately not good news from me. Hosp ConfiRmed today I miscarriage, HCG levels are falling now and getting more pain and bleeding which is a shame as me and my partner wanted this baby so badly after trying for 2.5 years but hopefully we'll get a rainbow baby.

Honestly thank you for even replying to my messages guys, you eased my mind for a few days with your hopeful replies and stories but honestly you have all helped my mind and anxiety a little. God bless you all. Form this young mummy of 1 from UK.
