When to tell work?

I have worked out I am probably around 8 weeks pg, I have an appointment with docs next Thurs to start antenatal care.

I work as a teaching assistant in a school so start back next Monday. I have told all of my family on Christmas day as I was sure I would probably need to tell others at some point and I wanted family to be first to know. I am now free to tell whoever needs to know at whatever point is necessary.

I have already decided to tell the teacher that I work alongside, as I have had pretty awful nausea and vomitted occasionally over the past week or so and I get the feeling its only going to get worse. Also I work quite closely with a child who has been violent to adults in the past (never aimed at me but I would be kicking myself if he did get violent and I hadn't spoken up sooner.)

As I have an appointment the first week back at school I am wondering whether to tell the finance manager and headteacher (they process requests for time off) and request that they don't tell anyone else until after 12 week scan. That way I would be able to go to appointments without having to lie to them. Just not sure I like the idea of them knowing as I would be worried word would spread even though I had asked it to be kept secret.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Your line manager cannot tell anyone - they have to keep it confidential due to data protection as it is medical/ sensitive information about you.

So tell them, if you say you are keeping it private - they cannot say anything.

Just say "I wanted to tell you as I wanted to be honest about requiring time off for the scan" shows you are considering them!! :-)

Tell HT reason for appointment and also get risk assessment done esp. re. potential violent child.
I'm a teacher and thankfully in Nursery this year there's no one who is physically challenging. Told HT as she was worried my "appointment" might to do with stress and told my Nursery team as I was in very late (for me) due to sickness.

When I did announce it turned out a few other people knew but I never found out if it was HT or Nursery who leaked it!

I told my line manager & department boss at 5 weeks because nausea & vomiting started then it got really severe & I had some sick leave. I was glad I told them due to the severe sickness as it just made working so hard! One or 2 female colleagues guessed before I told everyone at 12 weeks just because I looked & was sick for so long it's only just calming down now at 23 weeks!
