I know this has been discussed many times on here and am planning to trawl through old threads but wondered if anyone had got ahead of me and put together a list of what to have ready for baby.
Am thinking essentials + desirables and including quantities too.

Will post again once I've made an ultimate list!

Ooo, I was wondering this too! We've asked friends and family, but they all say different things. So far the advice has been:

car seat (1)
changing station that folds up into a bag so you can transport it (1)
babygros (lots)
cot (1) (don't bother with Moses basket)
baby bouncey thing so you can rock them with your foot (1)
pram 'system' (1) (although I'm jiggered if I'm spending £1k+ on one!)
muslin squares (lots)
nipple pads (lots)

Add to that:

Nappies
Little hats
Two little jackets / cardis
Easy access bras (if bf)
Covers / blanket / swaddling blanket
Batch cooking for your freezer
Scratch mits

I love this part!!

Oh and cotton wool for topping and tailing !

Re nappies - we've been told not to stock up too much on one brand as they may not fit right, so get as many sample packs as possible. I'm still hoping our pfb will fit Aldi nappies

Do you need nappy rash cream at this stage??

And I'm totally squeeing over baby sleeping bags!

Very, very little

You need something for them to wear (clothes and nappies), something for them to eat (things to support bf or bottles for ff), somewhere for them to sleep, and something for them to travel in (car seat, plus pram and/or sling)

The thing is, what suits one family won't suit another. So for example a changing station - lots of people rave about it, and we did have one, but found within a week that we just changed DC on a mat in the room we were in. Other people won't buy a changing station, and within a week be desperate for one.

Ditto bouncers and slings and all that. Some babies will love them, some will hate them. I spent £50 on a wrap that both DC and I absolutely detested. Ditto they weren't a fan on a bouncer. Both of those are things that people will also rave about and call essentials. But on the flipside, we didn't buy any swaddling stuff and it turned out DC ended up being swaddled until 7 months old...

Nowadays you can buy everything within a day or so. Get things if they are cheap or passed on to you, but with most stuff it's better to wait until the baby is here and you start to figure out what they like. No point spending £100 on the much heralded BabyBjorn bouncer only to find out your baby likes being worn at all times!

Honestly you need very little.
7 vests and baby gros. You will be brought loads!
A infant carrier britax baby safe one of the longest lasting.
Nappies.
Close sling/Moby

I'd recommend reading baby calm or womanly art of breastfeeding and thinking more about caring for baby and your parenting ideals.

I also loved my babytec auto fade light. Great for night feeds. I side carred a cot bed to my bed

grobags - cotbed for the nursery and either moses basket OR bed nest, I'd say, not both. You won't need many blankets if you are using either a grobag or swaddling blankets, you'll only need blankets occasionally then. I wouldn't buy more than one grobag or swaddling blanket/pod as those tend to be thing babies either love or hate, so you want to test them out first

chair (rocking?) Nappy bins are a really 50/50 for a lot of people. I'd think about whether you need them. Are you really going to take your baby into a specific, different room each time they need changing, especially if you would need to go up or downstairs to reach that room. Is there a bin nearby? Newborn nappies are very smelly, you might find you want to put them straight outside

I've critiqued your list to help you save a ton of cash based on our experience.

Travel system:
pram

Bed:
moses basket
bednest - don't think you'll need a moses basket and a bednest.
cot bed
mattresses
sheets (4) - we got away with 2, but then I'm not a change at every dribble kind of person.
blankets
swaddling blankets - use a normal blanket for swaddling.

Furniture:
changing table - completely unecessary in my opinion
Curtains - just use what you've already got in the room then decorate at age 2/3 when they actually have interests/an opinnion.
chest of drawers - very useful, i'd go for the deep ikea ones.
toy box - a carboard box does the trick for us
rug - probably not necessary
nappy bin - just use a normal swing bin for £5
chair (rocking?) - we never used a chair

Clothes:
sleepsuits/babygros (7-10)
bodysuits/vests (7-10)
hats (2)

booties - just go with babybrows with feet in
bibs - useless until weaning and never used the million we had
mittens - get babygrows with inbuilt scratch mits
pram suit/fleecy all-in-one - good idea, but they're dangerous in carseats so for pram use only.
snow suit
padded jacket - didn't use one until DS was walking (18 months) snow suits much more practical.
socks - just use baby grows

Nappy bag:
