Had CVS which came back fine - now issue with heart at 20 week scan

Hello,

this is the first time I have posted on a site but feel that I am not getting any straight answers from the ob.

I went for my 12 week scan which showed a nuchal of 3.5. I am 25 and was told not to worry too much about it until I had received my blood results.

To cut a long story short, after my bloods came back, I was told I needed an amnio by my ob but I would have to wait another 4 weeks before I could have it done and they wouldn't perform the CVS, so I booked in with the FMC and had a CVS done at 14weeks.

CVS results all came back clear, and today I excitedly looked forward to my 20 week scan as in my mind I had nothing to worry about. It turns out that the ob is now not happy with how his heart looks and has asked me to come back again in 2 weeks so that he can have another look.

I am going out of my mind with worry. I thought the CVS showed if there was anything wrong?

please could somebody give me any advice? ...has this happened to you.

I'm very sorry that you're worried and dealing with this. No, CVS - like Amnio - is limited to what it can show, chromosomal orders I think. There are other issues that a baby may have that it won't show and this is the main reason for the 20 week Anomaly Scan.

I went to my 20 week scan with my youngest son - now 11 - and it picked up a problem with his bladder and kidneys. A subsequent Amnio came back clear but he does have a Syndrome that would not have shown on either Amnio or CVS.

It's a bloody hard and horribly scary thing to deal with - I'm now 10 weeks pregnant again and scans are not my friends! There's no one to blame for this, the best thing to do is concentrate on now.

Sorry to hear you are having hard time and fingers crosses for you.

When you went to FMC didnt they scan you also?

Yes when I went to FMC they scanned and said everything looked absolutely fine, checked and measured his heart, kidneys, lungs...everything and she said that he looked very happy and healthy.

I just felt very dismissed today. He gave me one shoddy photo that was all blurred, and told me his secretary would be in touch in the New Year. so I have this hanging over me all over Christmas and for the next 2 weeks with very little or no information as to what it is exactly he thinks is wrong. I could see al 4 chambers that looked to me like they were beating away - but obviously I don't know what I am looking for.

I have also been having really painful lower abdominal cramps since getting back to work which seem to be getting worse and I am struggling to stand up.

How stressful . As probably says, CVS only checks for chromosomal problems (mainly Downs, Edwards and Patau though they may also look for rarer chromosomal abnormalities, this is called a "full karyotype").

However there are other problems which are not chromosomal and a CVS will not pick them up.

The only thing I can say is that if it was a really serious issue I would expect there to have been some sign of it at the scan the FMC did at 14 weeks. So I would hope it is not a very serious issue. Also you do have the reassurance that it is not a chromosomal issue.

Where did you have your 20 week scan? Also how many weeks are you now?

I think you should call your midwife team about the cramps.

Hi Minipie.

I had my 20 week scan at the hospital today. I will be 20 weeks on Friday. I am trying to think positive, it was all just very flippant as if this was just another day in the office. He was yawning when he was doing the scan and when I was asking questions, he was just mumbling nonsense as if he just couldn't be bothered.

just would like to know at least what he could be looking for ...

Is it possible that the scanner just didn't get a good enough look at the heart and that's why they want you to come back? Not because they actually have a worry but just because they couldn't get a clear image/baby not in the right position etc? This is pretty common.

If you're not sure which one it is, you could call your midwife team, they might be able to look at your hospital records and clear things up a bit.

Usually if they find something they are really worried about, they will take you into another room to talk about next steps etc, if that didn't happen then I would take that as a good sign.

Hi it is tough, I know. We had high risk rating at nhs12 week scan. Had harmony tests and scan at FMC at 14 weeks - no issues seen. Results of harmony were useless as test did not work. At NHS 20 week scan see a problem in head/brain but we do not get seen for another 8 weeks. Waiting is horrid. And we do not know if clear from chromosomal issues as not having an Amnio due to health/risk issues that most people not have to consider but we do.

he just spent nearly 45 minutes, measuring his heart and taking pictures from all different angles, and then told us we would have to come back as he needed more time.

Silverstars - it is such a worrying experience, and the waiting just awful. Have they given you any indication as to what might be wrong?

Hi, no we have no idea. Increased risk of chromosomal problem we know but could be growth issue or placental issue or as yet not told. Or all ok. It is a long 8 week wait is all I am finding.

Sorry you are going through this.

Did your dr say what he thought may be an issue? When I was scanned at 20 weeks they couldn't get a clear look at DS heart and I had to go back a week later when he had changed position (he hadn't!). A week must have made a difference though as he could see what he needed to (and all was fine). Could you go back to FMC?

Hi Allisgood.

I live in the Channel Islands so to get back to London again in the next couple of weeks would be extortionate with flights/hotels etc.

I have tried calling the doctors to find out whether they have any further information and they have just said that he needs more time to examine his heart.

I am trying to hope and think for the best but it just seems every time I start to relax, they throw another curve ball that worries me senseless again.

I think a high nt is indicative of DS because they sometimes have heart problems. So they could just be taking a good look because of your history.
Good luck for your next scan.
Its unfortunate its so worrying over xmas.

Thanks. Hope all is good next time. If he is concerned I would ask for referral to a specialist, ie a cardiologist.

This happened to me, the 12 weeks scan showed a high nt of 3.8 and my blood results were all over the place. I declined an amino and had additional scans at the FMC.

They spent around two hours scanning DS. There were lots of concerns about abnormalities and we went back for follow up scans which were inconclusive. He does have a heart condition and was born with two holes in his heart. Neither have required treatment and one has now closed. A high nt I have since learnt us common with heart conditions.

DS is almost three now and a wonderful happy, little boy. He does have a few other ailments that have come to light and are being monitored but they are nothing major. The number of them mean they suspect he may have some sort of underlying congenital condition but it not anything that requires testing and he is a medically fit, healthy child.

What a worry for you. The FMC scanning equipment is very detailed and advanced. Hopefully it's just a case that the NHS equipment isn't as good and clear images couldn't be seen properly.

I hope your follow up appointment brings positive news.
