oops, just had a look at that cheese list and I've eaten most of them all the way through both of my pregnancies!! - only the ones made with pasteurised milk though
I live in France - how could I give up Brie????

Must admit that I ate it but waited until about 24 weeks so I was pretty sure that the beany was well wedged in, mmmm now should that be camembert or cambazola wedges.As soon as I had DS urge for toasted brie, cranberry & bacon paninis abated...

yes you can eat it - I never actually worried too much about eating unpasturised brie.

No, I'm afraid you can't because it's mould-ripened.

Or rather of course you can, there is a slight risk attached, up to you, really.

No - MI's right - it's mould-ripened cheeses that are not recommended in pregnancy because of the (small) risk of listeriosis.

hmmm - oo I'm in a quandery(sp?) now - I've had a sudden craving for brie and grape baguettes......have to confess I've already had one as I'd bought pasteurised thinking it was definitely ok.......now it appears I shouldn't - but it's all I want to eat ATM [frown]

I looked into these things when i was pregnant and found that all these food things are cultural! In France pregnant women are not told to avoid brie and in America pregnant women are incouraged to eat peanuts. I think everything in moderation is OK!

I looked into them for an article I wrote for a pregnancy magazine, and that's the information I rootled out. Yes, it's cultural. The risk is low in any case. But that, depressingly, is what I had to write...

yeah food advice varies so much from place to place. Had a good giggle with my French gran as she fed me prawns and pate! Personal choice I suppose at the end of the day.

hello all, first time poster, had my DS in the uk and stuck to all the rules!! was for ever checking food labels, then moved to france and had DD. I couldn't believe the difference, only appeared to be 2 rules, wash all vegetables very well and don't eat lettuce in a restaurant. Brie, pate, shellfish was all definately on the menu and my mw looked at me very odly when I asked her about eating rules.

As Indith said, down to personal choice I suppose, my rule with DD was as long as I knew what I was eating came from a reputable producer and it was well in date, then in moderation I was happy.

The French eat Brie unpasteurised in pregnancy... it's very much a British thing to be so against cheese in pregnancy - this is an observation!

so you can eat any cheeses if they are cooked cos that will kill the bacteria. Is that right???
