Anyone else here suffering?

I'm almost 33 weeks with Baby number 3 but my 1st GD pregnancy.

I'm currently on 500mg of Metformin Slow Release 4x a day and insulin twice a day.

I see the obstetrician and diabetes consultant every 2 weeks along with a growth and doppler scan and then see the midwife every week inbetween.

I'm having a girl and 2 weeks ago she was measuring on the 99th centile and I've had another 2 weeks of uncontrolled sugars so I'm dreading my scan on Tuesday and seeing how much she has grown again. I have no risk factors so we were all very surprised with the outcome of my GTT!

Anyone else in the same boat?

Hi ladies. I was diagnosed with GD last Thursday. Had to go for the GTT because I have a very high BMI (but have only put on 1kg since checking in appt in August!). I'm handling it well (I think) considering it is my first pg and I am overly cautious.

My bloods seem to be ok during the day, rarely over 6.8 after eating lunch or dinner, which tbh are the same as before, but it is my morning bloods which are crazy. I'm lucky if they are within the pre-meal target before I eat a thing. And it doesn't matter what I eat or even how little I am eating, which i hardly count a small handful of shredded wheat (yuk) and 4 spoonfuls of WW yogurt and a builder's brew to be a bad breakfast, do you?

Started metformin today so hopefully that will help, but I feel massively guilty about it all, and am very scared that the diabetes will be with me for life.

Yddraigoldragon · 16/12/2014 09:47

Not pregnant, but diabetic here, just wondering whether eating fruit is likely to be a trigger for you? I could not and would not consider eating a banana or a bowl of fruit as I know my sugars would respond. Eating essentially meat and salad is starving yourself, which kicks in a load of other primitive responses.
The best diet for me is high fat, medium protein and low carb, breakfast in a minute is going to be scrambled egg in butter as an example. Your body needs fuel to grow, carbs are causing an issue so the alternative fuel is fat. Worth checking out the low carb boards here or other diabetes forums.

Yddraigoldragon · 16/12/2014 09:59

Also be careful of processed food. WW yogs are low fat but loaded with sugar so best avoided. Best is lidl in big tub or Total Greek full fat. Low fat is not your friend...

LancashireTea · 16/12/2014 10:10

Unfortunately I have to eat my breakfast at work and we have no cooking facilities. Plus eggs make me vom in the mornings (the smell). I have checked the sides and ingredients thoroughly and the WWs one is better than the Total Greek for me, as I can't really afford to spend a lot on food and the WW was the best one on offer. Fruit is not a trigger for me at all. And too much wheat makes me vom as I'm quote intolerant to it so haven't eaten bread for years.

I just keep going dizzy in the morning, which is irritating.

Yddraigoldragon · 16/12/2014 10:20

I would pick anything that is not low fat tbh as the sugar content is better. If you cannot eat bread, how are you tolerating shredded wheat? Confused.
I also eat cheese, cold meat, carrot sticks and mayo or cream cheese for breakfast, some days I cannot face eggs either.

cheshirem2b · 16/12/2014 10:22

Have you tried porridge for breakfast? I was diagnosed with mild GD at 28w due to high BMI. I was diet controlled and discharged from GD Team yesterday. Don't panic and worry - take the advice from your medical teams - you can do it!

LancashireTea · 16/12/2014 10:28

I feel sick as a dog eating it but only have 5 or 6 squares tbh. I have very tiny hands. I was eating porridge before i got pg, but ever since the consistency makes me sick. I was throwing up a lot till 22 weeks and since then certain textures take me straight back to that.
I'm sure the tablets will help.

ILiveOnABuildsite · 16/12/2014 12:50

Have you been referred to a dietician? I was during my first pregnancy after being diagnosed with GD and it made a big difference because I didn't understand how I could be eating healthy and still get high results. But it's as Yddraigoldragron said above, low fat is loaded with sugar and the best diet to control sugar levels is high fat, protein and low carb and when you eat carb try to eat complex carb that take a low time to break down (ie whole wheat, brown grain, bran and the like). My dietician definitely said to stay away from too much fruits and if I had them to eat them alongside a main meal so that the sugars in the fruits will be broken down along side the fat and protein and then it won't affect my levels as much.

Due2015 · 16/12/2014 15:38

Could you try soya and linseed bread (Bergen) that's what I have, sorry if you can't have that I just find that okay for me

Frantastic84 · 16/12/2014 17:57

I've just been diagnosed at 22 weeks. This is my second pregnancy and last time I was diagnosed at 28 weeks. Have to wait until next Monday to see the nurse and dietician so I have a week of doing my best and trying to remember what worked for me last time. All I remember is cheese and ham for breakfast, ugh!

sophspot · 16/12/2014 19:08

Hi guys, I was diagnosed at 29 weeks due to higher bmi. So far I am managing diet control only. But this is so restrictive basically loads of quorn (me being a veggie) & vegetables/cheese/eggs any bread fruit or yogurt sends reading high. First growth scan was in normal range at 30 weeks with no concerns waiting for another at 35week. Finding it very hard tbh, but want to do my best for my son as will be so worth it. :)

RunningAwayFromMyMind · 16/12/2014 20:54

Hi all, had a positive appointment and scan today.

Babies growth has slowed down so even though my numbers are high (8-11) they are better than they were 2 weeks ago (12+)
I'm staying on the 4x Metformin and they've upped my quick release insulin at breakfast and evening dinner and put me on slow release insulin at bedtime to try and get my fasting levels down.

Although I get extreamly frustrated with my high levels I know that over the last 2 weeks some good has been done.

Feeling much more positive now Smile

That's good news Running
I've just been to the hospital and they have put me on Insulin with my evening meal. Does anyone know what will happen with regards to being induced will it be earlier now I'm on insulin?

RunningAwayFromMyMind · 17/12/2014 12:33

I think it's still 38-39 weeks regardless (dependant on how baby is and levels etc)

It's very much a see how it goes, which in a way is very frustrating!

sophspot · 17/12/2014 19:25

Had 2nd scan to today since diagnosis. Growth has slowed too much, now below normal so explained they will scan in 2 weeks and will induce at 37 weeks if growth is still slow. They are happy with my sugars to stay diet controlled. Such a roll coaster of emotions. Main thing she said was any drop in movements go straight in. Oh had protein s keytones and white bloods cells on urine so they've sent it off too.

Due2015 · 18/12/2014 08:34

I've had ketones etc.. In urine and they have just sent it off and I've never heard back so I assume it's been okay. I had my first insulin last night and my bloods were higher than they have ever been this morning. I'm bad on Monday though so he can re adjust my dose if needs be

RunningAwayFromMyMind · 19/12/2014 18:04

I've had my insulin adjusted again. I have discovered that if I put loads of cheese with something carbie I can get a reasonable number, I have to be careful though because cheese and high fats play havoc with my stomach. It's a no win situation at times!
I had a lovely plate of chips and cheese with coleslaw last night and scrapped by with a 7.7 so just under!

OP posts:
Due2015 · 19/12/2014 19:14

Cheese is high in protein isn't it? So maybe try something lower fat but protein so some meat or fish?

sophspot · 19/12/2014 21:49

Any cheeses work well for me I love hallomi fried in spray light had that tonight with rocket salad, puy lentils and roast parsnips. Reading was 6.2. :)

RunningAwayFromMyMind · 19/12/2014 22:34

I'm a veggie! Also my sickness and food aversions have returned so I can only really eat what I fancy which again is a pain.

Just 4/5 more weeks to go!!

I find the insulin fine it doesn't hurt, I find it easier than the finger pricked

RunningAwayFromMyMind · 20/12/2014 07:32

Insulin doesn't hurt at all whereas I hate finger pricking, I'm a massive wuss and have it on number 2 and it still hurts!
I always inject in my stomach too because I find it a lot easier especially if I'm out.

I also take Metformin 2 at breakfast and 2 with my evening tea, I have the slow release as the standard ones didn't agree with me at all.

A combination of the Metformin, fast release insulin and slow release insulin has brought my numbers down, still not under target but the are coming down.

I'm lucky because my consultant gives me a lot of free reign to adjust my insulin as I feel I need it so I've started testing pre meals and if it's high I add an extra few units.
