UCH or Homerton Hospital? (London)

Hi,

Does anyone have any experiences of maternity care or giving birth at Homerton hospital or UCLH in Euston?

I have chosen UCLH for my Maternity care although It am closer to Homerton, and worried if I go into labour the ambulance will end up taking me to Homerton anyway..

I had a check up at UCLH because I had pains and they were brilliant where as Homerton did not offer to see me that day and were not helpful.

I went to Homerton and care was variable.

If I were you, I'd stick with UCH as you seem happy there. You are very unlikely to need an ambulance to get to hospital in labour. I tootled along in a black cab.

It was over a decade ago but I had two deliveries in UCH and both were brilliant - one pre refurb, one after but both were top notch

I had awful treatment at homerton early pregnancy unit

Go to UCH. I have heard better things about it from friends and family who had babies there.

I'm 34 weeks and at the Homerton, and so far it's been excellent. Am planning to use the birth centre which is pretty new and midwife led. I'm very happy with it and feel confident and safe there , which is the most important thing

I had a far from great experience at homerton and the post natal care was notably bad.
Babies 2 and 3 born at UCH and I would rate it higher, although both were elcs so no experience of labour ward. Post natal care is good and the whole place has a much nicer feel. Nice and new and shiny too!

UCH was dire. An utter nightmare. The staff were awful, but that was three years ago. EPU was great though, as were the consultants, just not the ward staff...

It was seven years ago at homerton btw - and so much depends on what happens on the day.

I had DD at Homerton two years ago and care during the birth was excellent, after it was appalling.

Plan A was the birth centre but I never saw it because I asked for an epidermal right away . Anaesthetist was extremely condescending - will never forget her - but she was gone after five extremely condescending minutes and then I had two lovely midwives with me, one qualified and one trainee.

Our discharge was a mess, and we had moved during my pregnancy, so my post natal care fell under another borough - Homerton failed to do the handover properly and no midwives came to see me after the birth. A total mess. Would that be a factor for you?

Forgot to say that I was at Homerton last year. All fine until postnatal ward which was utterly dire. But, in Central London, all postnatal wards are likely to be over stretched to an extent.

Hey! I had my care and delivery at UCH.

The care was top notch fabulous.

The birth was ridiculous. I used the birthing centre there. The midwives seemed disinterested and impatient, I had high blood pressure and needed to go to the labour ward but there were no beds so I was stuck in the triage room in the birthing centre as they wouldn't let me in any of the nice rooms (even though I had no choice but to deliver there) then both mine and another baby came at the same time and they literally ran from room to room to deliver, discharge took 20 HOURS! Never again.

I had my DS at Homerton a year ago because I was having an ELCS and I had heard the surgical teams were fab (and they were). They also have an amazing NICU if needed. However the post natal ward was absolutely horrendous, I was badly affected by experience there for ages afterwards.... needed lots of help with BF and didn't get it, culminating in me sending DH home to bring formula to the hospital as DS blood sugar was down. They never kept on top of my pain relief and I was staggering down the ward in agony and tears when no one responded to my buzzer. They simply don't have enough staff or beds to cope. The food was diabolical (I'm not fussy at all). I waited 6 hours to be discharged and was handed a prescription for ibuprofen and paracetamol (which I would take for a hangover NOT after major abdominal surgery). I don't know anyone who went there that wanted an epidural who actually got one due to lack of available anaesthetists. Sorry OP but if I was having another DC I definitely wouldn't be going back to Homerton.

Hi guys thanks, I have asked my friends and the same stories about Homerton and rubbish post natal care keeps popping up. However if I do go into labour will i be whisked to Homerton as I am nearer living under hackney in stoke newington. Just something to keep in mind if I do. I am really impressed with them so far as I said the other day they saw me straight away whereas Homerton closed its early pregnancy unit. Not had great personal experiences with hometton myself for other treatment. This will be my first baby. Thanks for all your help x
