finding out the sex of baby at scans always accurate?

I was at my scan and they had said its more than likely a girl, however i am showing most signs that it will be a boy. I have herd stories of people being told wrong and when the baby is born it is a girl. i dont want to also buy girly things if they are only 'more than likely' sure it is a girl. Any ideas?

I'd trust scans and a qualified medical interpretation a lot more than signs!! But, no, they are not always right. If they said 'girl' without any qualification though, I'd say it's 90-95% likely you're having a girl...

so would i be better to wait until the baby is born? i just like to know for definite

Hmm, I think if they said 'more than likely' it's not totally definite. But they often say that if they see the '3 lines' (meaning it's a girl). They are generally only certain if they actually see boy bits. So I'd buy a few neutral bits and then have a phantom shopping basket full of the girls' things you like that you can just click on and pay for when the baby arrives. Most stuff can arrive the next day or the day after. (But, if you see something lovely in the sales, you might as well buy a few bits - you can always give them as presents or eBay them if you have a boy!!). I bought girls' things last time round when i was told I was having a girl but not that many - and partly because DC1 is a boy and I wanted to get some 'pretty' stuff myself. Having said that, you'll be bombarded with pretty clothes when the baby arrives and you'll probably only need to buy a few newborn bits - and then buy more 3 month plus stuff.

If you need to paint a baby room, I think a pale turquoise is lovely for a boy or girl (and not as much as a cliche as pink for a girl)!!

Are you having any other scans? Some hospitals do later routine scans so you can ask them to check then. Or you can ask if you are being monitored for growth or something. Alternatively a private gender scan might be worth thinking about if you can afford it - if you don't want any health details checked, they are normally fairly reasonable (I think!!).

well i have a midwife appointment christmas eve, and they told me if the woman was about for scanning she would scan me which would be good too before christmas. but i dont want to pay a lot of money to get a private scan either, my baby is very stubborn and always sits awkwardly in scans so you cant see between the legs to actually see if it is a girl or boy. I might enquire about a scan on this appointment: suppose if you don's ask you don't get.

We didn't find out so brought unisex clothing etc and it's fine. I figured we wanted x2 children anyway so unisex clothing would be easier to pass down if diff gender. In the end we have x2 boys but I'm not a huge fan of boyish and girls only stuff so they still get brought unisex stuff most the time

You can always buy 95% in white/ navy/ green/ red etc then add the odd boy/ girl accessories once born if you like. Only new to buy first few sizes anyway in advance

i will buy unisex until im 100% sure just but yea im not really a pink for girls girl anyways so ill chance my arm,

I only know two people who were told their baby's sex at the scan and they were both wrong! I wouldn't make any purchases on the strength of the scan.

see im carrying very low also and thats associated with boys maybe im just being biased too and reading into things, would anyone suggest getting a private scan or should i just wait?

'Signs' are usually rubbish, so I wouldn't invest much in them at all.

I also know someone who was told girl and had a boy. Your sonographer doesn't sound 100% sure either. So I would just wait and see.

I carried exactly the same way with DCs 1 and 2 (boy then girl). The bump looked so like a typical boy-bump that a white van driver stopped in the street as I was coming out of the house, the day before I had my daughter, and shouted out of the window 'that's definitely a boy'!! Found it funny that random workman I didn't know was so sure based on 'how I was carrying'. But you might be right .

only thing i am going by atm plus the uncertainty of the sex. just going to have to wait and see by the looks of it

No offence but I would definitely go by what a sonographer thinks rather than 'signs'
I'm always a bit baffled by people who ask to find out the sex and then post threads like 'they said it was a boy but I think it's a girl so could they be wrong?' Lol
If you want to know, book a private scan for about 60 quid and the sonographer may be able to tell you a 98% prediction.
Personally don't know anyone who has been told the wrong sex, but obviously it happens as this thread and it's responses are evidence of that.

I apparently carried completely typically for a boy, and had a girl. It was actually quite amusing as we had found out we were having a girl at the scan but hasn't told anyone that we had found out. I was told throughout pregnancy by everyone around me that it as definitely a boy, and we knew all along it was a girl.

No they're not always accurate unless you've got a great sonographer and decent scanning equipment is being used. We're finding out the gender via the harmony test instead.

I have 2 boys and was told at their scans they were boys . This one ive been told is a boy but have 10 weeks to find out , although she did point out his todger and scrotem so I think she was right this time too lol .

The sonographer never says they are 100% sure because they'd be daft to. But if they think it's a girl is very probably is. I had scans at 16, 20 and 30 weeks that all said 'probably' a girl. I could very clearly see she's a girl!

I was told girl and had a girl. But even with a private scan, they make you sign a paper saying that you realise that there are no guarantees.
Buy mostly unisex stuff would be my advice. Although TBH the baby isn't going to care that he or she is wearing the "wrong" colour babygrow, so get what you like.

Agree with those who have said to trust a sonographer over signs...

We've had two pregnancies, each with a private and nhs scan and every one has said a girl. When they see its a girl they're even less inclined to give assurances because it'a the more likely way for it to be incorrect but if they'll even give an indication it's likely they're quite confident. Our nhs sonographer said unless she was at least 80% sure she would say she didn't know.

If you want to know for definite then get the Harmony blood test done - that will tell you 100%.

If you really want to know I would recommend a 4d scan slightly later down the line. I had one at 28+4 and I could very very clearly see that he is a boy! The sonographer at my 20 week scan was very confident when he said it was a boy, but I didn't really believe him without seeing the evidence for myself.

I had a friend who got told she was having a girl at her 20 week scan and she had a boy so it definitely does happen!

My friend was told a girl and a boy came out, it definitely does happen!

We didn't find out last time but my ocado delivery driver told me I was having a boy And I did!
