Perineal massage woes

Ok TMI alert but I'm really hoping someone out there has had success with perineal massage and can give me some advice.
All I've read says to do it for about 10 mins... But after 30 seconds I'm in a world of burny pain Sad
Sure I must be doing it wrong but I can't work out what I should be doing!
Fingers or thumbs? How far in? What does the perineal muscles actually feel like?!?

Thank you!!

It does hurt at first. Not an area that gets a lot of stretching! Use KY jelly. Thumbs in as far as you can. Push down and out. Totally worth it in the end, honestly!
