Completely shallow I know, and obviously healthy, happy so this is only intended to be light hearted.

But if you're totally honest has it crossed your mind?

I was a fat, bald baby, and I was looking at dps baby photos at the weekend and he had a huge head and mouth!

We're no oil paintings now but we don't scrub up too bad.

Ds wasn't the cutest of babies but he was gorgeous to me and is turning into a handsome little lad.

But honestly, has it crossed your mind?

My DS was super long and skinny when he was born. So skinny that, even though he was full-term he had that bug-eyed old-man look that preemie babies have. Even though I could see that objectively he was a very, very odd looking baby, to my heart he was the most beautiful, wonderful thing I'd ever clapped eyes on and I was totally in love.

You might have a funny looking baby, but you won't care - it'll be love at first sight.

DD is a cutie and it has no been good at all. At daycare she is the 'pretty girl' which drives me nuts. Now at school her teacher takes her seriously but the teaching assistant coos over her cuteness. It drives me nuts.

DS was not as cute when born and it has been better for him. He is just as beautiful as his DD to me.

naty1 · 10/11/2014 22:35

Dd started off cute only to me. Great smile.
By 1 was very cute, still
Blonde etc. bit sad it will grow out dark as it looks so lovely :(

Not the prettiest but better than could be expected given my looks.
Its sad they change so much around 4.
Though dc2 could come out not cure and continue like that.
Its funny male child stars cute but look awful (childlike) as men. Harry potter, elijah wood,
You really cant tell till they get to late teenage.

Haha love reading these comments

Our 12 weeks scan was so "cute"

Then we had 20 week scan and she looked like she had a huge nose, big chin.... looked strange!

I said out loud "oh lord I hope her face doesn't really look like that!" my OH burst out laughing but everyone else thought I was a horrible witch.

Obivously it's a scan, nothing to go off at all. But ever since then when I see other peoples ...somewhat scary and sometime downright naughty looking children, I panic a bit!

Obviously we'll love our children no matter what! I think we all think about it whether we say so or not!

I thought both of mine were cute at birth but looking back at photos where their hair hasn't grown they just look odd now. Especially DS who now has a mass of white blonde curls which are so much part of him he looks so terrible without them.

dietcokeisgreat · 11/11/2014 11:59

My colleague has a 20month old who is, well, quite unique looking. Since about 3mo this little one has been rather ugly but his dad insists on showing me hundreds of 'cute' photos all the time! I think its lovely they think their Ds is so beautiful.

I certainly think my current DS (aged 3) is cute but I've never been under any illusions he is anything more than average looking!

ILiveOnABuildsite · 11/11/2014 13:06

I thought my dd was so cute, luckily I didn't brag about this to anyone other than family at the time (and of course the completely agreed with me at the time too). Looking back at some photos of her as a new born she looked like a wrinkled old potato with a thick tuff of sticking up black hair. She also had cradle cap all over her face! Somehow all of this didn't register with me at the time. She is three now and her hair is a gorgeous golden dark blond, long and curly at the end, and her face really is very beautiful. She is quite cute now, not just my opinion this time she gets quite a bit of compliments from strangers too (beaming mummy Grin)

But hand on heart as a baby she looked like a chimp!

Dc2 coming soon and I've compare their scan photos and they are uncannily similar so maybe I'm about to have another chimp!

purpleteapig · 11/11/2014 13:34

Haha buildsite, 'wrinkled old potato' made me laugh!

I think young babies look a bit peculiar - even the 'cute' ones have cradle cap, baby acne etc. when they get to a few months old they blossom IMO with chubby pink cheeks and soft skin.

jenniferfreckles · 11/11/2014 13:35

I'm ginger and my husband is quite hairy on the chest, arm and leg department (not the back thank god!) I've resigned myself to the fact that we're going to have a little Orangutan.....

MiniLop · 11/11/2014 15:03

Ha ha jenniferfreckles I'm in a similar boat to you... except DH does have a hairy back too!
I was not a pretty baby, but DH was very cute (not so much now Wink) here's hoping DC1 takes after his/her dad at first!

Kim82 · 11/11/2014 15:08

I always thought all my babies were gorgeous when they were tiny. I look back at photos now and they're not quite as cute as I thought - dd1 had a teeny, tiny head but a massive double chin as she was so chunky Grin. I couldn't see that at the time though, I thought she was gorgeous. They're all good looking kids now though (could be parent goggles kicking in again there, I don't know, but I think they're all lovely).

CoolStoryBro · 11/11/2014 15:08

DS1 was the ugliest baby when he was actually born. He had a cone head from the Vontouse and a swollen nose and face from me pushing the 9 1/2 lbs of him out! But one look into his soulful eyes and that's all I could see.

Aliennation · 11/11/2014 15:17

Mine was actually gorgeous as a newborn, got stopped in the street all the time etc. Then at around 4 months he got a huge double chin, his skin turned to sandpaper and he lost all the hair on top of his head but kept the rest.
He literally looked like his grandad Confused.

dayspringjubilee · 11/11/2014 15:23

I was worried about this and then I got the 3D scan. Flipper may have her dad's heavy brow and my sloping nose, but somehow it works and she is gorgeous!

AndHarry · 11/11/2014 15:27

My PFB was the most gorgeous newborn ever. At the time. Looking back at photos 4 years on he was cute but a bit furry. DH once made the mistake of calling him The Grinch. I cried :(

montymonty · 11/11/2014 16:37
Grin Totally worried. My sister has just had the cutest little baby, she's set the bar high!

I don't really care though.

CaptainAnkles · 11/11/2014 16:40

I was very worried my babies would be ugly, yes. I think that it's very normal to worry about everything. I also think it's possible for a mother to realise when her baby isn't very nice looking, I know someone who was very upset when her first DC was born because he was ugly. He improved though, she got over it.

AGnu · 11/11/2014 16:49

DS1 kinda resembled a monkey, but not in a cute way... DS2 was far more aesthetically pleasing. I'm rather fond of both of them though! Grin
