Do I need folic acid?

Hi, I've been suffering with terrible sickness for the past 3 weeks. (I'm 10 weeks pregnant now).

I can't even keep water down.

I've seen my doctor who has prescribed some tablets but they don't work as I can't keep them down. I'm literally being sick 10 minutes later.

So, I've stopped taking my folic acid because I can't keep it down.

Am I being stupid for doing this?

Should I continue to take them even though they won't stay down?

I just assume they can't work if they won't stay in my system.

I'll be interested to hear any replies to this. I take four other tablets every day, plus during my first trimester I had the vitamin as well. As soon as I took them, they'd come straight back up, and some days I had to just go without. I'm 32 weeks now and baby isn't showing any ill-effects, but that could easily be down to luck!

Are you managing to eat anything? Because folic acid is found in many foods as well as tablets, so perhaps try to eat some folic acid-rich stuff if you're very worried (and can manage it!).

I do find it easier on my (pathetic) gag reflex to take tablets with something thicker than water, such as a yoghurt or milk drink, though I imagine that's the last thing you want to be drinking right now!

Good luckSmile

Definitely still take them as you will absorb something from them no matter how long they stay down :)

Well if you can't even keep water down, shouldn't you be in hospital?

If you can keep anything down at all, then crush them and mix them in.

I take mine just before I get into bed since they do make me feel sick and I find they're more likely to stay down then.

Thanks all,

Yeah Annarose2014, I was told yesterday that if I haven't been able to eat anything by tomorrow, they will send me to the hospital.

Not all days are as bad, but most days I'm being sick 6-7 times, even though I haven't eaten anything.

I usually have a slice of bread or a packet of crisps before I go to sleep (as it stays down in the night).

Thanks for the comments. :-)

Anti nausea injections?
Are they just the small folic acid only ones?

naty1 · 04/11/2014 19:28

Doesnt low blood sugar make the sickness worse?

Hello, the neural tube is actually closed by around the end of week 7 of pregnancy, so at your stage of pregnancy you no longer need folic acid to reduce the risk of spina bifida and other neural tube defects. Hope you are feeling better soon.
