Losing mucus plug at 27 weeks - is it going to be okay?

I will be 27w tomorrow and today I've had two lumps of clear/yellowish mucus when I wipe (tmi, I know, but I think we're all past that!).

I've read on Dr Google that it regenerates at this stage and not to worry unless it's bloody.

Is that right? Would you ring maternity or NHS direct tonight to check? Or maybe antenatal clinic tomorrow?

Can't get in touch with my MW as she only works a couple of days a week and won't be around for a few now.....

Thanks. I've rung NHS direct who say it is not an emergency but I do need to see a GP or MW tomorrow. My MW doesn't work Mondays so am going to join the scrum of pensioners applying for 8am appts tomorrow

When the receptionist asks whether it's an emergency, do say yes :)

I was loosing mine from early 20wks with ds2&3 id loose bits every week, I did hold on until 40wk with ds2 and 38wk with ds3. It does regenerate but thing is some people go into labour as its different for everyone, so it is best to get checked out....i did when I started to loose mine xx

I posted about this on here a few weeks ago as I seemed to lose a large chunk of mine (think I was about 15 weeks). I didn't see anyone, and assume it has just regenerated as nothing untoward has happened since, but yes, the sensible thing to do would be to see someone! Especially at your stage, as if you are in early labour at 27 weeks, there are things they can do to help, whereas at 15 weeks you're pretty buggered. Saying that, if you have no other symptoms, I would say it is unlikely that you are, but it is definitely worth getting checked that it doesn't look as if it's impending.

So I went to see the GP, who first said she didn't think I was losing my plug and if it weren't my first pg I wouldn't be so worried this was despite my now having lost 3 five-pence size blobs in 18 hours.

She didn't want to check if I was dilated as it might precipitate labour and she said if I were in labour, there was nothing they could do.

Then she took my BP and decided to sign me off sick for a week.

anyhow she ended up seeming to take it seriously.......

Have left a message with the MW so we'll see!

There are things they can do. The gp is wrong.
Steroids for the baby's lungs. Drugs to hold off labour.
I'd ring the ante-natal ward and go in to let them check.

i'm 27 weeks and saw a blob of discharge/mucus in the shower last week. to be honest it wouldn't have worried me at all, discharge is normal, but it was a bit bloody. I was checking my underwear all day and then same thing happened in the shower the following day but no blood. i didn't go to doctor and have had nothing since so not worried.

I don't think it's anything to worry about at all unless it's a large amount or non stop. surprised she signed you off for a week to be honest, sounds OTT if she thinks it's nothing to worry about.

I had the exact same thing happen at 22wks (5th baby) and I went to Maternity Triage, I was even experiencing a few niggles, they examined me properly and said it was normal Cervixal Mucous. Thankfully I've not had anything since, but it's always best to pop in the maternity unit to get checked out.

Babyblabber I agree about being ott but the BP made her think I needed rest. I would normally ignore it but then I thought, what if something happened and I had to look back later and wonder if lying in bed would have made a difference?

I've had no further losses after those three but I am having mild abdominal "period pain" style cramping. I will take a paracetamol and hope it goes away. It's not bad now but I keep thinking what if it leads to something else? And then feeling stupid for being so anxious

Feeling anxious about everything is completely reasonable - this is your baby! Of course you are worried about things going wrong. I think the GP's comment about you being a first time mum was very patronising and unnecessary. I'm on my second preg and still worry about everything! I would def speak to your midwife and see what her thoughts are, espec if you are feeling a bit crampy.

I would ring the labour ward of your local hospital for advice, especially now you are getting pains. My friend's premature labour started by losing part of the mucus plug.

The phone number should be on the front of your notes and will be staffed 24 hours a day.
