Cervical erosion in pregnancy - advice needed!!

I am 18 weeks PG and am having my second bout of bloody mucous appearing when I wipe myself. The first was after I fell downstairs 3 weeks ago.

I had cervical erosion with my last pregnancy and had bloody mucous continuously for 3 weeks between weeks 15-18.

Afer I fell downstairs I went to A&E and the on-call gynea said I have cervical erosion again. Today however, the on call gynea I saw said there is no cervical erosion!!

Am getting very confused and anxious about the cause of bleeding.

Has anyone else had cervical erosion and can you offer me any advice? Is it related to hormone levels? (I also get very sore boobs when I get the blood).

Can it endanger the pregnancy?

Don't believe can endanger the pregnancy - it could indicate an infection (but think they would test you if worried.) I think cervical erosion is common in early pregnancy - I seem to recall you are advised to stop BD if bleeding happens after this but other than this try not to worry (easier said than done).

i have had one in 2 of my pregnancies. Do not think they are serious - more of a worry for you really. try to relax but do go to gp if you are worried!

no - but in one pg i had low lying placenta and each time i had a tiny bleed they dragged me to hospital - only later to diagnore erosion. do you have pain?

I was told I had cervical erosion many years ago, way before my babies. Quite common, I was led to believe. Has caused no problems whatsoever, they just keep telling me I have it at every smear test!

Tarka - I don't have any cramping, but do have a kind of sore feeling around my lower abdomen. It feels tender. The baby is moving around a lot and I wonder whether that is making it tender.

I have lower backache as well, which can ve associated with cervical erosion, and sore boobs too.

The blood is red and appears in the mucous.

No new blood today, just a smidge of old - had a good sleep last night, so feeling less frazzled today.

Fatfox, glad to hear you are doing better.

I find MN is about timing, if the right group of poeple are around at the right time then you can get loads of information, but other times you can end up with nothing.

Hi Fatfox -I had cervical erosion during my last pregnancy. I was scared stiff as I'd had a m/c the pregnancy before and thought that was what was happening again but the GP assured me that it was cervical erosion and explaind that its to do with the changes in the cervix and hormonal levels throughout pregnancy.

I went on to have DS, no problems. I haven't had any bleeding to suggest cervical erosion since and my most recent smear came back as normal.

I had cervical erosion with both of my pregnancies (worse with dd2), I had bleeding on and off from 10wks, after the 3rd time i was told i had cervical erosion which can not harm the baby, it can be caused by hormone levels and can happen to anybody (pregnant or not), i was told if it was no better after pregnany i would have to have treatment for it but after i had my babbies it seemed to be back to normal.

If you have any more bleeds its still best to get looked at in case it is anything else and if you are still worried demand a scan so you can see that your LO is ok and to put your mind at rest.

I found any kind of straining, lifting heavy objects and sex would trigger it off so take it easy.

Marne - I had to lift heavy DD on Sunday, plus she also poked me really hard in the abdomen and the bleed started about half an an hour later. Likewise I bled 3 weeks ago after quite a minor fall down stairs. More of a slip and landing on my bum rather than a fall.

Interesting what you say about the hormones, as the bleeds co-incide with having ultra-sore pregnant boobies, so there could definately be a hormonal link there.

Hi fatfox, I can't offer you a lot of advice as I am only 8wks with my first. However, I had a bleed on Tues and panicked that I was miscarrying only to be told that it was cervical erosion. The doctor said it's fine, it won't damage the baby or me and is extremely common. In fact the word erosion is misleading, there is no erosion at all. The doc said the tissue is just more vascular and sensitive in pg and heavy lifting, sex or straining can cause it to bleed.

Found this on the net:

"The narrow passage through the cervix is lined with glandular cells that secrete mucus, while the outer part of the cervix is usually lined with a different, flat type of lining cell. Sometimes the glandular cells grow down and appear on the outer surface of the cervix to form a red, velvet-like area called a cervical erosion. This term is misleading however, nothing is really being eroded and the condition is entirely normal.

A more accurate term is a cervical ectropion. These cervical changes are a natural response to the female hormone, oestrogen, and can occur naturally in some women, during pregnancy, in those who have had children, and in women taking the oral contraceptive pill. Most ectropions cause no symptoms. However, in some women they produce an increased mucus discharge. Occasionally the delicate cells may bleed easily when touched or during vigorous sex.

A cervical erosion that does not cause troublesome symptoms normally needs no treatment. If symptoms do occur, treatment by freezing (cryotherapy), heating (cauterization) or laser may be suggested. Like all women, those with a cervical erosion are advised to have regular cervical smears. This is not because erosion increases the risk of cervical cancer, but because the visual appearance of erosion may make it more difficult to recognise a cervical cancer should one occur."
