What is your experience of a sweep?

I've just had a sweep today. I'm 39 weeks and the midwife said she could feel the baby's head and I was 1cm dilated.

I just wondered how effective people found them that had a sweep before?

Not effective at all for me.

I had one at 40 weeks with DD. Labour started at 40+9.

I had two sweeps with DS and they did absolutely nothing. Labour didn't start at all and I ended up having a section at 42 weeks.

With each of my sweeps I had blood and mucous loss and cramping so I became really excited. But then everything just faded off.

I had ds within 48 hours of a sweep. He was 2 weeks early. Labour was more painful than my previous labour (where I had no sweep) but I don't know if the sweep was the cause of that. I had the sweep at noon on a Wednesday. I had no inkling that it had been effective until 2am on the Friday morning. DS was born at 9am (7 hours later)

Have had many. Once in hospital for an induction at 38 weeks that was excruciatingly painful and hopeless. I went home the next day. When dc3 was overdue had 4 in 8 days (not painful just a little uncomfortable) and again nothing. Ended up being induced at 42 weeks and she came like a bat out of hell Smile.

Curious about this too. With DC1 went to 41+4 & no one even suggested sweep. I had no interventions. This time around it was mentioned at about 36 weeks as an option when I was near due date. Reading responses on other threads, not convinced they do much unless you're ready anyway?

40 weeks today and just had one tonight but nothing. Midwife couldn't do it as cervix closed and posterior. Mainly uncomfortable but was painful when she tried to bring my cervix forward. She also said it would be unlikely to start anything.

MummyV18 · 27/10/2014 20:42

I had my sweep this morning (11am) Mine was posterior too but as mentioned above I am 1cm apparently. Not sure if that will make any difference.

Not feeling anything yet. So we'll see.

I'm 38 weeks with number 2. I have an appointment tomorrow and will probably be offered a sweep.

They weren't sucessful with DD so I'll probably refuse. I also found them very painful and still went nearly 2 weeks over!

MehsMum · 27/10/2014 20:51

Sweep 1: no effect at all. Very overdue DC3 just sat there, fatly, growing.
Sweep2: DC3 even more overdue. Labour began within 24-48 hours. I can't remember exactly, it was quite a long time ago. Can't be sure it started the labour, but said labour was very quick and efficient!

Valsoldknickers · 27/10/2014 20:55

Had two sweeps over three days or so. They didn't work though. Had to have an CS as I was 11 days over.

CaptainAnkles · 27/10/2014 20:56

I was offered one but refused it because the midwife had really horrible yellow rough skin all round her heels and for some reason it put me off the idea. Confused
I then went home and remembered that I was a week overdue and hideously uncomfortable and phoned up and asked to come in for a sweep that I had refused. Blush
It didn't work and I had to be induced.

bloated1977 · 27/10/2014 22:23

I had one and 1hr 47mins later I was holding my baby Grin

katienana · 27/10/2014 22:28

I had one on ny due date and went into labour 3 days later. it didn't hurt at all I was already 2cm dilated. my theory is if it hurts it won't do any good as you're not ready.

HexYouSoThere · 27/10/2014 22:39

I had one with DC2, it was uncomfortable but baby arrived next day (40+5). It was either the sweep or me slipping and falling on my arse at the school gates the same afternoon collecting DC1 from school Blush

MissMole · 27/10/2014 22:45

Had one with third overdue baby. Midwife pulled my cervix forward. It wasn't painful or even particularly uncomfortable. Baby arrived 48hrs later.

DxbtoLHR · 27/10/2014 22:56

I went in a couple of days after expected due date and just like you was 1 cm dilated and the baby's head was very low. Labour started within 48 hours. But to be honest I think DD was just ready to come. She was already low down and I'd had a bloody show before the sweep. Good luck!

elQuintoConyo · 27/10/2014 23:09

It hurt like @#%& almighty as it was a surprise "i'm just going to examine you" stealth sweep bastards

DS came 8 hours later with the help of salad tongs.

I was 40+12.

I had one about 36 hours ago. Felt like it stirred things up, had strong period pain for about 12 hours after. A few regular contractions (pain wise no more severe than period cramping).

It feels like it's now gradually wearing off. Just mild braxton Hicks now.

I'm 40+2 (at least I am now its 1 minute past midnight!!)

I'm disappointed, but at least I gave it a shot. Better than wondering what would have happened if I didn't have it.
