Diabetes and pregnancy?

Is anyone else diabetic and pregnant or maybe has been in the past? I'm finding it really hard to control my blood sugars down, they keep going up to like 13-16! My insulin has been doubled and it's still not working, I'm worried I might have to stay in hospital for a few days :(

Hi,

My background (basal) insulin has increased, and my mealtime insulins (bonus) have gone up from 1 unit per 10g of carbs to 2.5 units, so more than doubled. I also have to inject half an hour before eating to avoid astronomical highs after food. It's working at the moment but changes constantly, I'm 21 weeks so have a way to go still but the hospital are pleased with me and the baby.

How often are you seeing a consultant or nurse about it?

Hi Beckah

I'm 25 weeks and my insulin requirements are starting to increase practically every day. I find taking my insulin 20-30 mins before eating can help avoid post-meal highs. I also use Apidra insulin which starts working much quicker than other fast-acting insulin. Is your insulin in-date or could it have been out the fridge too long?

My specialist nurse said that I shouldn't be worried about peaks after eating as long as my pre-meal sugars and HBA1c were OK. Its the overall trends that matter more than the occasional high.

Get in touch with your diabetes team/nurse if you are concerned, they should be able to go through your recent results and help spot any trends.

Good luck with everything! I'm sure you'll get things under control soon Smile

It's really had me worried but I've found that injecting my insulin 10 mins before a meal has kept them stable all day today, I'm at the clinic on Thursday and my diabetic nurse is ringing me on Wednesday so hopefully she'll give me some advice :) thanks! :)

Hi. Glad you've had a better day.
I'm 33 weeks and my diabetes has been doing some crazy acrobatics. My bolas ratio has doubled but my basal has reduced by 1/3, it's now creeping back up slowly. It's all about testing! It'll be well worth it in the end. How far along are you?

I'm 30 weeks, my blood sugars have went a little high tonight but i took some correction insulin to make them steady :)
