Tummy pains at 5 weeks

Hi guys, I am 5 weeks pregnant with my first baby and I am having aches in my lower tummy especially on the right handside. Sometimes they feel just like my period is about to start, sometimes they feel more like a sharp cramp, other times its more like pinching/tingling just below my belly button. I have no bleeding so the doctor said all is ok, but can you tell me if anyone else was/is experiencing anything like that? Is it normal?
Thanks for your help!

Cramping like your period is JUST about to start is normal. I could have sworn it was just about to come on when I was 5 weeks pregnant but it was just my uterus stretching.

Regarding the sharp pain on a specific side, did you mention this to your doctor?

I had that with my second and called the midwifes (or 111 can't remember) and they sent me to A&E where I was scanned to check for ectopic. Turns out it was just the corpus lithium ( probably not spelt like that) stretching my tube and everything was fine.
Worth having it checked though, ectopics are serious. But try not to worry often its just the stretching.

Congratulations on your pregnancy :)

It'll most likely get better!! I had the same pains from about 6dpo until the last few days they've gotten much better. I'm 6 weeks now.
A warm (not hot) water bottle can really help :)

I'm so glad you posted this - I'm 6 weeks and for the last week have had low-level stomach cramps on and off, but also a couple of really sharp, intense bouts.

I'm worrying myself that it's because of an ectopic pregnancy, but it does sound relatively normal.

This whole thing is so weird - some days I feel like this isn't really happening and the two pregnancy tests I took were wrong, and then other days I get symptoms and think "oh yeah"!

MrsPopple29 · 23/10/2014 17:07

I'm in exactly the same position- 5+5 weeks pregnant and have been getting low level cramps/twinges/pulling sensation ever since I got my bfp. Also the odd 'sharp' pain but never for more than a few seconds. It really does seem to be normal! I sometimes get it when I stand up too quickly, or when I run for the train!

And I agree with smugs- the whole thing is very weird... symptoms are very on and off and completely unpredictable!

Congrats btw :)

Same here! Six weeks tomorrow and I get cramps and tugging. The worst one is when I am lying on my side going to sleep and I'll sneeze. Dear god. It's happened twice and I honestly felt like id been stabbed. But it's apparently my uturus stretching to breaking point. Nice!

leanne963 · 23/10/2014 20:27

Omg mistresskatherine the stitch when you roll over too fast in bed or sneeze is a bitch lol! There are so many weird aches and pains in pregnancy that I've never heard of before.

Anyone get the vagina/cervix spasms!? Feels like a trapped nerve suddenly spasms right near the entrance of the cervix?!? THAT is annoying but midwife said it's just hormones as I'm only 9 weeks!

aleksleat · 23/10/2014 22:29

Thanks guys! Smile You made me feel much better and I can stop stressing at least for the moment! I shall try the warm water bottle and hopefully it will help. Congrats to all of you btw Smile I still don't believe it's happening!

And congratulations to you!! I hope the cramps ease off or at least the warm water bottle helps :) a warm bath can do wonders too!! My cramps literally last for about 20 seconds each evening now. It's quite a nice reminder that the baby is still growing :) I don't think it'll feel 100% real until the first scan though!!

Robins123 · 25/10/2014 19:15

I also had the same pains, I went for an early private scan at 8 weeks just to make sure baby had a heartbeat etc as I was so paranoid ... The pains continued for around 11 weeks for me then stopped & came back at around 26 weeks ... It's all completely normal and just the body stretching to get ready for your new arrival xx

Hi guys - thanks for posting this and the responses. I only got my BFP on Saturday and although we've been trying, I wasn't expecting it as I'd been getting period like cramps. I had an MC last year and had convinced myself that the current cramps were a pre-cursor to a second one...but I feel so much better having read this thread, so thanks! And congrats everyone!

Hello!
I've just joined,
I am 5.5 weeks pregnant, totally shocking to find out, went into the doctors complaining of abdominal cramps and they thought it was appendicitis (not pregnancy as I was on the pill) but no... It's a human!!

So yes, I have had awful cramps and they've definitely calmed down a bit now but I still feel them every so often.

Fingers crossed for all of us!! Xx
