Third trimester weight gain

How much did you gain per week in third trimester? I seem to have been putting on 2-3 pounds per week since week 36 (now week 39) whereas up until then I was gaining a steady pound per week, which seems to be what is advised as 'normal'.

I don't feel that concerned (just very round Sad) as I don't have any other alarming symptoms of anything like preeclampsia, I feel well in myself and all my urine & BP checks have come back fine (last checks were on Wednesday), just a bit disappointed that I seem to be piling it on in the last few weeks. Did anyone else get this?

It does seem to coincide with the start of my mat leave, perhaps the change in pace has meant the weight is staying on more? I'm not eating considerably more but I guess I am moving about a lot less as I'm not travelling into work and back. I am going for walks and trying to ensure I'm doing something productive each day, not the same as a full days work though.

Has your midwife indicated any concern?

Tbh I can't remember how much / week I gained last time. I started at 10.5 stone & ended up about 12 I think. I lost it all afterwards - over time though.

I'm not as far as along as you - 34 today... and it has been about 1lb a week. But this is quite variable with me.... depending on how much water I drink. If I drink loads and pee loads - it can be less... if I have a little swelling it can be more. I would say that I haven't put on much weight since my booking appt - probably only 8lb. But I had some spare to give my baby! Which I'm grateful that she has taken!!! :)

I wouldn't worry too much, baby might be having a little growth spurt, just be on the look out for any other symptoms.... they keep checking me weekly for Preeclampsia symptoms because of elevated BP - which is normal for me due to and sever case of white coat syndrome. A lovely midwife I saw last week explained that the one thing preeclampsia patients have in common is the protein in the urine. I did buy some test strips from Amazon so I can check this myself... which really stops me worrying.

But apparently you can often have a little protein show up on the strip which would mean that they would do a blood test to be sure. Apparently Amniotic fluid can taint the results - which is a problem during labour... but if that were the case before labour, then they would want to do a full check up anyway... better safe than sorry right!

Thanks Jaffa and Jersey.

Jaffa - no concerns from midwife, as I say I had most recent appt on Weds and urine & BP were fine. I am measuring spot on for 38 weeks as well so no concerns from midwife with regards to protein levels, BP or baby size.

I haven't been weighed once throughout pregnancy though (or been asked about weight to be honest), I'm just going on what I've read on NHS site and the pregnance tracker apps I've been using. I sometimes think all the info we have access to on the internet is bad rather than good as you can give yourself cause for concern even though none of the medical professionals I've physically seen have!

I started off with a normal BMI so should be aiming for 25-35lbs weight gain overall from what I can gather. I'm at 39lbs now though, 9lbs of which I've gained in the last three weeks.

I think I should just keep an eye out for any other symptoms. Baby should be appearing any day now anyway.

Just to update the thread should anyone come across this having the same question - just spoke to MW and she said it's completely normal.

Baby grows a lot from 36 weeks onwards, plus with increased fluid retention etc it's not unusual at all for me to suddenly be gaining a bit more week on week at this stage. Women can gain up to 4 stone during pregnancy and I've gained 2 stone 11lbs so far so am well within range.

MW was more than happy to talk me through all this over the phone and I could give her specific details of my start weight, current weight and rate of weight gain throughout my pregnancy to help give the best advice. I think my biggest lesson here is to just call rather than worry yourself with endless articles with varying advice on the internet!
