How far off was your ultrasound estimated weight in comparison to actual weight of the baby?

Just out of a check up because the consultant thinks I might have gestational diabetes because the baby is do big. At 29wks it was measuring 3 1/2 lbs and today at 32 weeks it's measuring 5lbs. I'm have the gtt test next week but if it's negative then I just gave a big baby. The consultant said that if it keeps growing at 1/2lb per week it'll be 9lbs at birth. I'm freakingvout a little. How off were your us measurements? Or we're they spot on?

Martie1, try not to worry everyone is diiferent. I have had two 9lbers and only needed two stitches both times.

With DD (who is now 4 weeks old) I had lots of scans and her abdominal circumference was off the chart. Her weight at 36 weeks was estimated at 7lb5oz, four weeks later when she arrived she was 9lb11oz so pretty accurate seing as they say they gain 1/2lb a week.

rubyboo2 · 15/10/2014 09:30

Hi I had growth scans for my 2nd ds they said he would be big . The sonographer said +/- 25% for the measurements . I to had gtt and i was normal . They were right he was 9lb 2oz and 4 days early . For this pregnancy I have personalised growth charts he is estimated on average to be 9lb 3 -11lb !! And his head is measuring a week in front so i will definatley be having an epidural lol . good luck Smile

rubyboo2 · 15/10/2014 09:32

Ps i found it easier giving birth to a larger baby and needed no stitches like i did with his older brother who was 7lb 2oz .

NotChimpandZeeagain · 15/10/2014 09:33

Mine was predicted to be 10lbs plus and was born at 7lb4oz, so I don't personally set much store by it!

Notabar · 15/10/2014 09:34

I was told DS was big for dates and to expect a 8-9lb baby. He was over 10 lbs.

I had an ultrasound a week before DD came and was told that she would be another big baby, 9lbs plus. She was 7lbs.

TzuByTwo · 15/10/2014 09:39

They never gave me any estimations on potential weight with DS or DD1, but DD2 was pretty closely monitored, and estimated to be pushing 11lbs at the final scan before she was born. She was born 8lbs 1, so that was a relief after everything people kept telling me about big babies!

coolaschmoola · 15/10/2014 09:45

I had GD. At 38+6 they predicted that dd would be 10 lbs at 40 weeksso they induced me....

My dd was born at 39+2 weighing a whole 6 lbs 7.5! So they were over 3.5 lbs out.

JoInScotland · 15/10/2014 09:46

I was told my baby would be about 7 lbs, maybe 7 1/2. Result? 9lbs 8 oz baby - biggest ever in my partner's family, and second biggest in my family - only beaten by my 10 lbs niece. I think a lot of pregnancy is a surprise, whatever medical advances they make.

hatsybatsy · 15/10/2014 09:52

massively wrong - scan at about 36 weeks said he was already over 8lb. they seemed to base this on the size of his head and stomach.

he was 6lb 15 at birth. he just had a big head!!

Mothersruin75 · 15/10/2014 10:31

Had scan 4 days before elcs with twins (born at 37 + 2) both estimated to be approx 7lbs, one was 6lb 12 & one 6lb 10 so pretty accurate.

DC1 was 9lbs 1oz, I had a natural labour but I'd had no growth scans with her so wasn't expecting her to be quite so big. I'm a shorty - 5 ft 3, I had an episiotomy to help her out but it was all fine.

I last had a scan at 28 weeks with DC4, DC4 was measuring approx 3lbs so similar size to you, there was no mention of having to have a diabetes test. I'm not expecting a small baby though with the size of the other three!

ChoochiWoo · 15/10/2014 10:35

A fair bit all estimated approx 8.7 lbs ..he was 9lbs 3 Shock i think DS 2 was more on point

Threesoundslikealot · 15/10/2014 12:24

Scan at 40+10, big scare, you have a huge baby, 10lbs at the very least. Baby born at 42 weeks at 9lbs, so not that unreasonable for two weeks past EDD.

Second baby measured 50th centile at 36 week scan, born at 40 weeks on 50th centile. So pretty accurate! But probably more chance than anything else.

spiderlight · 15/10/2014 12:30

Miles out. They went on and on and on about how big he was - he was 6 lb 6! He did have an enormous head though.

RunByFruiting · 15/10/2014 12:33

I had a scan the Monday afternoon that put him at 8lb 6-ish, delivered the Tuesday morning and he was 7lb 3.

Wouldn't worry about it, it's just an estimate x

darlingfascistbullyboy · 15/10/2014 12:36

mine were pretty close - estimated birth weights (scans between 34-36 weeks) of 3-3.5kg for all of them - they ended up being 3.3/3/2.7kg

bagofsnakes · 15/10/2014 13:00

Pretty far out - they estimated that he would be about 8lbs but he was 6.13lbs. He was super long though, maybe that threw them? I wouldn't worry, sure you will have the perfect sized baby for your body.

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 15/10/2014 16:31

I am 34weeks had scan 2weeks ago n baby was estimated to be 4lb 11oz so not far off your weight no concern just said oh top of centiles May be a 9-10lb at term.

M27J5M · 15/10/2014 23:05

I got a scan the day before my son was born at 34wks and they said he was 5lb1, he was 5lb2.5 at birth

martie1 · 21/10/2014 17:48

Hi all, just an update! I don't have GD just a big bub!! Was in with doc today who advises that if it continues to grow at current rate they will simply induce me just before or on my due date. Current rate would mean baby will be 9lbs at that time.

They didn't measure baby today, as they said that doing it every week can be confusing. So im back next Tuesday to have another growth check. Going to try lay off the sweet stuff this week but Im still weighting 11stone myself so all in all, very confusing. From all of your info, it seems as likely that the measurements could be wrong or right.

We do have awfully big heads in my family, and my dh's family aren't small headed either, so if they are just going on that measurement, they might be completely off!!! Checked with my mum today and out of 5 of us, my brother was a whopper at 10lbs 1, but the rest of us were all round 7lbs. My dh was 7lbs and he was the biggest in his house, but his mum smoked a lot and still does so that may have effected his birth weight.

So looking forward to this little bub coming out one way or another, and I am not going to panic or stress (my mantra the whole pg, it hasn't worked out that well to date!!!)

Thanks again!

Well this thread is just what I wanted to hear!! Yes, seriously Grin
I was told at 29 weeks that my baby was 4lbs and estimated 9.8ish at 40 weeks. My GD test came back perfectly normally - not even close to the lowest positive figure. I am overweight, but also have a family history of whopping great babies, so it was half expected. However, if so many people are reporting back that the predictions were really far out, that makes me feel a little better! I'm having another growth scan at 32 weeks so will report back in a fortnight!

Noggie · 21/10/2014 18:17

My midwife panicked me by saying I hadn't gotten any bigger so thought baby might have stopped growing- went for scan to be told she was going to be big according to femur and skull measurements - she was 7lb 8oz! I am sure there is a lot of science involved but also babies don't always go along with the science!
