Had horrid sickness throughout first trimester, accompanied by super sensitive nose and aversions to a lot of smells, even nice things like persil washing liquid! Now sickness has subsided (I'm 14 weeks) but I still have the smell thing with some smells... both real and imaginary!! There's a revolting smell in my kitchen that DH insists isn't real, makes me retch every time I get a whiff of it. Worst of all, DH ate some garlic over a week ago which also made me gag. He swears he hasn't had any since but I can still smell it on his breath! Really strongly. It's horrible - I literally can't go near him! I have to turn away from him in bed and in the morning our bedroom STINKS of garlic and I can't go back in there until it's been airing out for a couple of hours! He swears he hasn't eaten any and I believe him, but honestly, he reeks!!! I sometimes smell it on other people too (who probably have eaten it) but nowhere near as bad. Anyone had this before?? And when will it stop???????!!!!!

I went through a phase (about that time?) of being very sensitive to smells and smelling things everywhere. It's subsided now though.

JoanJettPack · 12/10/2014 13:50

Me! I'm 11 weeks and I can smell garlic everywhere and it makes me feel really sick. My sense of smell has been wonky for a few weeks. I can smell cat pee and feet at work, my car smells of burning hair and the perfume I've been wearing for years absolutely stinks all of a sudden.

I feel like I'm going insane Confused

Annarose2014 · 12/10/2014 16:15

Cigarette smoke. Everywhere. Even in my car, where I don't think anyone has ever smoked!

I have started burning incense so it masks the phantom smell. It does work.

Google told me it was "olofactory hallucinations" and is very common in pregnancy.

Whitetara · 12/10/2014 16:46

I went through a short phase of thinking I could smell a dead animal such as pigeon stuck in the chimney running through all our rooms. Noone else could smell it so I guess I must have been hallucinating it.

I had this horribly in first trimester and it's returned in the third (35 weeks now). I think my kitchen smells disgusting too. I'm convinced I'm not imagining it - I think perhaps it's a smell that's always there that seems much stronger/different when I'm pregnant?! I'm always moaning at DH about what he's eaten too. Oh and the tumble dryer smells bad too - not inside, just sort of a horrible warm smell!?

lillamyy1 · 13/10/2014 11:25

Oh god, I'm so glad it's not just me!! Weird that it's returned Isabella. I'm scared it will never go away for me, even when I've had the baby!! What if it's broken my nose for ever?!

I had it with DC1 too, though not as badly, and am pleased to report it
did go! It's miserable though. Hope it will ease for you as you get further into second trimester x

Pearljam79 · 13/10/2014 15:10

I'm 13 weeks and convinced there's a cat following me everywhere! All I can smell is cat wee:-(
My husband must think I'm crazy but I keep asking him if he's sure he cleaned his teeth this morning, and anyone I come close too seems to have halitosis
Cooking smells are sending me over the edge - garlic is suddenly vile, bacon makes me heave (I normally love the smell of bacon) - even the mere mention of bacon sends me running for the loo!:-(
I've had to change washing powder as Persil now makes me heave:-(
Everything just seems to smell so much stronger than usual - olfactory overload...!

bumpitybumpbump · 13/10/2014 15:21

I can't open my fridge at the moment without retching. I swear to god something had bred and then died in there. DH says it smells fine and has even cleaned it out. Yet it still smells of death to me. I can also smell pee everywhere. Dog pee, toddler nappy pee. I even investigate to see if DH had wet himself in the night the other day because it literally smelt like I had a wet pampers on my pillow. Luckily he didn't wake up to fine me "investigating". Bring on second trimester and normality Wink

teejayem · 13/10/2014 19:33

pearl I can smell cat wee too. I was utterly convinced thought one of mine had peed on my work clothes or bag, the smell at my desk was so strong.

Nobody in the office could smell a thing, and I'm sure oh would have said somthing had I left the house a pissy cat lady.

Can still bloody smell it tho

Spadequeen · 13/10/2014 19:35

I used to be able to smell dog shit and cigarette smoke - nice. A symptom of pregnancy no one warns you about. Thankfully it went when the baby was born!

Bellyrub1980 · 13/10/2014 21:10

I could smell hamster cages everywhere. I don't think I've been near a hamster cage since I was 11! But in the 1st tri (and perhaps in and out in the 2nd) I could smell the dirty rotters everywhere!!!

Mothersruin75 · 13/10/2014 22:48

I'm smelling cigarettes too and it's a stale, how my clothes used to smell the morning after a night out in a smoky pub/ club, it's not pleasant. Had it in my first trimester, it went away for a few weeks but returned at 30 weeks and still can smell it at 33 weeks. Thanks for posting this I thought I was going crazy.

BananaToast · 14/10/2014 13:13

When I was about 11 weeks I came out of the tube and the entire road smelt like smoked salmon, it was so strong. It lingered all day on and off but I've not smelt it since. Assume that was all me as nobody else seemed to notice.
