Hello all, new to this site and to pregnancy! I've googled this and searched the forum, but not found anything relevant yet - I'm pretty prone to cystitis in regular life (mostly if I mix wine and sex!) and can remember my gran saying she always got it throughout her pregnancies. Want to prevent it if I can. Drinking cranberry mixed with water once or twice a day but wanted to know if it's okay to take cranberry tablets (holland and barratt). It doesn't say you can't on the pack! Also, is it almost inevitable that I'll get it during the 9 months? Is that common? :s Thanks!!

I don't know about the tablets but I would drink the cranberry and plenty of water throughout. That will help with lots of things.
If you do get an attack then a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass of water is safe and check anything with midwives or gp..

Hi op, I was also very prone to cystitis before pregnancy. Touch wood, I haven't had it once since being pregnant. This could be because I have gone off most drinks, so drink copious amounts of water which also leads to more toilet trips!

If I do feel as though I might be getting the start of an infection, I up the water/cranberry juice. I also have those same cranberry tablets from holland and barratt and couldn't find anything about them on the internet etc. I do take one every now and again if I feel like I'm getting an attack but I have been nervous to take them any more regularly than that as I haven't checked it out with my midwife or GP.

Good luck, hopefully you'll be lucky too!Smile

I seem a bit prone and got a bad infection in early pregnancy. Which I had to have some horrific antibiotics to get rid.
Have kept at bay (touch wood) drinking shed loads of water and weeing just after sex

Avoid eating masses of tomatoes. I can eat punnets of cherry tomatoes after punnets after punnets. This results in cystitis or UTIs for me. They are too acidic. Doc's advise. It seems to be working!

Brilliant! Thanks all. The tomatoes are a new one on me, might hold off on those then. Thanks

Hopefully you'll be lucky and avoid it - I was prone and took cranberry tablets all the time, but I stopped when I was pregnant (mostly due to lack of info as to whether they were ok to take) and I didn't get any episodes. However, if you do find it occuring, I'm sure the pharmacy, midwife or Holland and Barrett will be able to tell you if it is safe to keep taking them. I think switching to decaf tea has helped me too, as well as all the usual avoid citrus, alcohol (obvs!) and pee after sex (and generally not waiting to pee). Good luck and congratulations!
