Confusion over Viability of Pregnancy - Help!

So this is my first pregnancy and first visit to this site so please bear with me and my lack of knowledge of the abbreviations! Smile

I found out a week ago from a HPT that I was pregnant - approx. 5 weeks based on my last period although I think conception only occurred 3 weeks before the positive result. I'd been having spotting for a week or so before the HPT in varying colours ranging from pink to dark brown but nothing particular heavy and it wasn't every day (sorry if TMI!). However, I woke up on Saturday night in a lot of pain on my left side still with spotting and my first fear was ectopic/miscarriage so my DHU took me to the out of hours doctor at our A&E who took a blood test to measure my HCG levels and booked me into the EPU on Monday morning for a scan. To cut a long story short, they told me my HCG level was 1508 from Sunday but that they couldn't really see anything in my uterus on the scan (there was something small but couldn't say what it was?!) so told me I was more than likely having a miscarriage and that I had to get bloods done again on Tuesday (yesterday) to confirm what was happening. Needless to say I was very upset - although the pregnancy was not exactly planned we were still incredibly happy, so it all came as I bit of a shock.

I've not had any spotting since Sunday and when the EPU called again today they told me that actually my level had risen to 4311 in 48 hours and so it's still a viable pregnancy. They couldn't rule out ectopic as they couldn't see my left ovary/tube so I've got to go back in 2 weeks for another scan.

I'd just about got used to the idea that it just wasn't meant to be, now to be told that it could still be happening, so Im completely confused not knowing what to feel/think! Also the fact that it still could be ectopic is adding to my concerns and confusion as I'm going on holiday on Friday for a few days and the last thing I want is to be ill in Italy!

Has anyone else out there been in this situation or can offer any advice?

If you only found out a week ago then youre probably around 4- 5 weeks not seeing anything is totally normal, I had a scan at just under 6 weeks and just saw gestational sac and yolk sac saying that the person who did my scan sounded a lot nicer and more helpful than yours

The hcg levels are fab (mine were 5920 at 5+5 weeks and if you check online yours are well within a good range for that gestation) I think the worst of it now is the not knowing and you do have to just wait for the scan in 2 weeks where hopefully you will see a tiny blob with a heartbeat.

I had all these tests because of suspected ectopic I was in agonising pain turns out was the hormones affecting my pelvis joints (previous sufferer of PGP) I think personally I wouldn't go away just incase but I think a chat with your gp might help to make your mind up on that

Thanks keelyboo. It's reassuring to know that someone else out there has been through this. The doctor in the EPU has told me I should be fine to go away so I've decided to go. Hopefully the sunshine will do me some good and being somewhere different will help take my mind off everything Smile
