I had my 16 week appointment on thursday, the midwife tested my urine sample and said she was concerned there was blood in it. She has sent the sample off to be tested.

I didn't have any symptoms of a infection but my stomach feels tender and achy and so does my back. After googling it seems like this can be a symptom? Now I don't know whether to go to the doctor on monday, because I don't know when I'm going to hear back from the results, or should I wait to hear? I don't even know for definite if I have one yet

Hi, how rotten for you. I had a uti in pregnancy too. Call the midwife on Monday to check if the results are in, or when to expect them. I wouldn't go to the gp as they will just do the same test abd send it off again! The midwife will hurry it through as you're pg, and will be able to prescribe anti-biotics if needed.
I expect Google threw up some pretty scary stuff right? Uti's are very common in pregnancy and not usually serious, but that's why you can be sure the midwife will deal with this in the best way. Meanwhile if over the weekend you start to feel really ill then call your maternity helpline and discuss it with them.
Good luck, fingers crossed it gets sorted quickly and you don't feel poorly!

Thank you! I only went on the nhs/baby centre sites so not too scary luckily.
The MW I saw was at the hospital when I was seeing the consultant so if I call my own midwife will she still be able to find if my results are in do you think?

Agree with the above - Google is scary but UTIs are v common in pregnancy and not usually anything to worry about. I would actually call your GP surgery on Monday and ask to see or speak to the duty doctor. If you describe your symptoms there is no reason they shouldn't prescribe you a course of antibiotics even without the results. I am quite susceptible to UTIs and have been prescribed antibiotics over the phone a few times without going anywhere near the doctors.

I think the worry in pregnancy is more to do with kidney infections. You can get one if you leave a UTI untreated, however, to be a problem that also needs to be left untreated and my GP said that it would be extremely unusual to have a kidney infection without feeling terribly ill. I had a kidney infection once when not pregnant and was very sick for over a week. Do treat the UTI though.

Thanks Decaff will give someone a call on monday

If you started to develop symptoms I would definitely not wait until results on Monday but ring midwife or GP. UTIs in pregnancy can get very serious - so quick treatment is important. It didn't take very long for my kidney infection to develop and put me into hospital when I had it

Until you get the results, make sure you drink plenty of water and cranberry juice is really good for UTIs

bronya · 04/10/2014 12:22

The results are sent to your GP surgery. You can just phone up and ask on Monday. Cranberries (I got some from Holland and Barrett) are great - they change the lining of your bladder/urinary tract so the bacteria can't stick to it, and helped me hugely a few weeks ago when I had a uti and was waiting for a GP appt.

I second Honeydukes on the cranberry juice! Also you can buy cranberry supplements at the chemist which I heard are excellent.

If you suddenly get worse (kidney pain, cloudy / smelly wee, burning sensation when urinating and afterwards), you can call 111. I did this a while ago (when not pregnant but in pain). They were able to put me in touch with a doctor who wrote me a prescription over the phone and sent it straight to my chemist.

yougotafastcar · 04/10/2014 15:16

Thanks! Will call GP on monday to see if they have my results in and will get some cranberry stuff later

The midwife will give the results to your GP if it's positive for UTI - I got my prescription for amoxycillin through the post yesterday - hope that makes you feel better! It's very common in pregnancy.

I had something similar last week... I had bad pain in my ribs which was unbearable! I couldn't lie down or sit up :( ended up being admitted to hospital for 4 days! I had a kidney infection! Co-codamol and even Pethadine to help with the pain... Still getting over it now :( hope all works out
